The Edict of Expulsion of 1290, Expelling the Jews from England
On 18 July 1290 every professing Jew in England was ordered out of the Realm, for ever, by King Edward I. Smith and Arnold S. Leese 1 The Settlement of Jews in England Geoffrey H. Smith There is little evidence to suggest that Jews settled in England in any large numbers until after the Norman Conquest. It was in Normandy, at Rouen, that a large Jewish community had existed since the Gallo-Roman era (see Gesta Regum Anglorum ii, 371n). William of Malmesbury stated that the Conqueror brought the Jews of London from Rouen. Thus it was armed might, not democracy, which led to England being occupied by Jews. However, Jews soon became indebted to the Norman Exchequer. An example of Jewish indebtedness is that King Richard I (who reigned 1189-1199) instructed Isaac, son of a rabbi, to pay 1,000 marks to Henry de Gray, keeper of the Jews in Normandy. (For references to Henry de Gray see Morant, History of Essex i. 95 and Landon, Itinerary of Richard I no. 451.) The first Jews to settle in England, then, were undoubtedly Jews from Normandy and in England they multiplied their number and their coins, until their expulsion in 1290. The Jews of England flourished, travelled many miles around Europe and profited through their usurious proclivities and mercantile pursuits. -

Paul Preston. Juan Carlos: Steering Spain from Dictatorship to Democracy . New York and London: W. W. Norton and Company, 2004, 608 pp. by Lynn Purkey Paul Preston, a distinguished historian in the field of twentieth century Spain, has written a timely and engaging new biography Juan Carlos: Steering Spain from Dicta torship to Democracy. The book is an insightful and often probing biography of this visionary King, while also tracing Spain’s transition from fascism to democracy during the tenuous period following Francisco Franco’s death (1975). Divided into eleven chronologically arranged chapters, the text is followed by an extensive bibliography, endnotes and an index. Moreover, the impeccably researched work boasts a wealth of interviews and private correspondence as well as the usual bibliography. In addition to being of interest to Hispanists and historians, Juan Carlos appeals to the casual reader, since it is an intensely personal look at Juan Carlos and other members of the House of Borbon, as well as being an emi nently readable text. Juan Carlos begins by recounting the history of the exiled royal family during the Second Republic (1931-1936) and the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), during which Juan Carlos was born (1938). It further catalogues the political intrigues and machinations that characterize the tense relationship between Franco and the exiled King Alfonso XIII (1886-1941), and his heir Don Juan de Borbon (1913-1993). whom Franco excluded from rule with the passage of the Law of Succession, which granted the dictator the right to choose his own successor. One of the author’s key contentions is the royal family’s dedication to service above personal considerations, which has been a hallmark of Juan Carlos’s up bringing and indeed his reign as King of Spain. -

The Rise of Benito Mussolini • Fascism’s rise in Italy due to: • Disappointment over failure to win land at the 1919 Treaty of Versailles. • Italy wanted a leader who could take action Mussolini Background • Was a newspaper editor and politician • Said he would rebuild the economy, the armed forces, and give Italy a strong leadership. • Mussolini was able to come to power by – publicly criticizing Italy’s government – Followers (black shirts) attacked communists and socialists on the streets. • In October 1922 • 30,000 followers marched to Rome and demanded that King Victor Emmanuel III put Mussolini in charge Il Duce Fist Pump 3 Decisions he made for complete control • Mussolini was Il Duce, or the leader. -

Antonucci © 2013 iii ABSTRACT Scholars of Italian-American history have traditionally asserted that the ethnic community’s media during the 1920s and 1930s was pro-Fascist leaning. This thesis challenges that narrative by proving that moderate, and often ambivalent, opinions existed at one time, and the shift to a philo-Fascist position was an active process. Using a survey of six Italian-language sources from diverse cities during the inauguration of Benito Mussolini’s regime, research shows that interpretations varied significantly. One of the newspapers, Il Cittadino Italo-Americano (Youngstown, Ohio) is then used as a case study to better understand why events in Italy were interpreted in certain ways. -

DODSON SPRING 2017 Introduction Biblical authors often employ literary techniques to communicate their messages with enhanced force. They were not, for example, interested in theology or historiography alone, but also in aesthetics.1 In other words, their focus was not directed solely on simply presenting information, but also on how the material was presented literarily. Authors would utilize many techniques in their writing such as repetition, chiasms, and typology to connect stories, to emphasize themes, and to flesh out nuanced truths. This paper will argue that Luke, in the Book of Acts, implements the aesthetic technique of allusion and typology to enrich his narrative. More specifically, this paper will seek to demonstrate Luke’s portrayal of Paul as the anti-Jonah in Acts. -

Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Ariel Mae Lambe All rights reserved ABSTRACT Cuban Antifascism and the Spanish Civil War: Transnational Activism, Networks, and Solidarity in the 1930s Ariel Mae Lambe This dissertation shows that during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) diverse Cubans organized to support the Spanish Second Republic, overcoming differences to coalesce around a movement they defined as antifascism. Hundreds of Cuban volunteers—more than from any other Latin American country—traveled to Spain to fight for the Republic in both the International Brigades and the regular Republican forces, to provide medical care, and to serve in other support roles; children, women, and men back home worked together to raise substantial monetary and material aid for Spanish children during the war; and longstanding groups on the island including black associations, Freemasons, anarchists, and the Communist Party leveraged organizational and publishing resources to raise awareness, garner support, fund, and otherwise assist the cause. The dissertation studies Cuban antifascist individuals, campaigns, organizations, and networks operating transnationally to help the Spanish Republic, contextualizing these efforts in Cuba’s internal struggles of the 1930s. It argues that both transnational solidarity and domestic concerns defined Cuban antifascism. First, Cubans confronting crises of democracy at home and in Spain believed fascism threatened them directly. Citing examples in Ethiopia, China, Europe, and Latin America, Cuban antifascists—like many others—feared a worldwide menace posed by fascism’s spread. -

Ancient Israel's Neighbors Isaiah was God’s prophet who was called to preach, teach, and prophesy to the entire known world, not just to those who lived in his kingdom. He prophesied to Arabia (Isaiah 21:13–17), Assyria (10:12–19), Babylon (13:6– 22; 21:1–10; 47:1–15), Edom (34:1–15), Egypt (19:1–25), Ethiopia (20:1–6), Moab (15:1–16:4), and Philistia (14:28–32). ISAIAH 2:16 And upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all pleasant pictures. Tarshish, the precise location of which is unknown, was probably a prosperous and bustling Mediterranean seaport. Through Tarshish, Solomon imported luxury items, including gold, silver, ivory, apes, and peacocks (1 Kings 10:22). Perhaps because of the city’s wealth and afuence, the destruction of Tarshish and its ships symbolizes the Lord’s judgment on the proud and arrogant (Psalm 48:7; Isaiah 23:1, 14). ISAIAH 7:18 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall hiss for the y that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. The y and the bee often symbolize ghting soldiers (Deuteronomy 1:44; Psalm 118:12). These symbols are well chosen because “the ooding of the Nile brought . swarms of ies,” and “the hill districts of Assyria were well known for their bees” (J. Alec Motyer, The Prophecy of Isaiah: An Introduction and Commentary, 89). In this case, Isaiah prophesies that the Lord will prompt the Assyrian armies, here referred to as “bees,” to come down on Judah. -

Spain Diversity Climate Notes *** WELCOME TO SPAIN The Diversity Network’s Country Diversity Notes provide readily accessible summaries of country- specific information on potential challenges for students who are from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in study abroad programs. The notes were created to facilitate the ability of study abroad professionals to find a good country fit for prospective study abroad students who are uncertain of how they will be received abroad because of their race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, religion or disability. The Spain diversity note, below, features a country overview as well as information pertinent to the climate of respect that U.S. students of diverse backgrounds can reasonably expect while living in the country. It also offers bulleted information noting facts that may directly relate to student experiences in the country. Links for students to pursue additional information resources on the various topics are also offered. While the note provides a bird’s-eye view of diversity matters in the country as they pertain to U.S. students, the country information found in the note is not exhaustive. Advisors should use the information contained below in collaboration with faculty and staff who have experience in the particular country, returned study abroad students who are able and feel comfortable to discuss their own observations of diversity in the country, and the advisor’s own knowledge. COUNTRY OVERVIEW Spain is the third most popular destination for U.S. study abroad students. Engulfing its Iberian neighbor Portugal, Spain has coasts along the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, with the Strait of Gibraltar to the south separating it from Morocco.
