www.elianslanucia.com PRIMARY YEAR 1 - YEAR 6 EDUCATION BUILT AROUND VALUES BOOK YOUR VISIT TODAY AT www.elianslanucia.com Our Intention TRUE IMMERSION IN ENGLISH What we offer We offer full-time education for children from Year 1 to Year 6 following the National Curriculum for England and Wales, alongside the compulsory Spanish subjects. The National Curriculum divides Primary (from Year 1 to Year 6) into two separate Key Stages: Key Stage One - Year 1 and Year 2 (5-7 years of age) Key Stage Two - Year 3 to Year 6 (7-11 years of age) How we teach Our curriculum allows cross-curricular teaching enabling students to study topics in more depth. We give our students the opportunity to learn in a way that is relevant to their everyday lives. Many concepts are taught through a rich tapestry of subjects and skillsets, which consolidate learning through drama, the use of modern technology, art and design as well as collaborative project-based initiatives, often involving offsite learning in the local community. 2 At Elian’s British School of La Nucia our goal is excellence in English for all our students. This aim goes hand-in-hand with our desire to foster their self-confidence, their individual talents and their ability to co- operate within an international atmosphere. 3 An academic atmosphere EVERY CHILD IS UNIQUE Every child is a competent learner, who can be resilient, capable, confident and self- assured. We recognise that children develop in individual ways and at varying rates. Subjects All of our teachers and support staff are fully qualified, dedicated individuals who take part in regular continuing professional development. Our teaching approach is child-centred: we strive to cater for the wide range of individual learning styles by planning activities to match students’ specific learning needs. The subjects taught in Primary are: English, Maths, French/German (from Year 3), Global perspectives (Geography, History and Science), Physical Education, PSHE (Personal, social and health education), Art and Design, Music, ICT/computing, Lengua Española, Ciencias Sociales, Valenciano and Religion (from Year 2, optional). During the teaching of English curriculum subjects, the students speak exclusively in English and they are also encouraged to use these skills outside of the classroom. Our aim is for our students to use English naturally, confidently and accurately. Constant Monitoring (Engage System) Our students’ progress is constantly monitored both formally and informally. Assessment is an ongoing process throughout the school day. Formative assessment is intrinsic to each lesson and informs class teachers of the needs of each student in their class, which helps us to support every child to take the next steps forward in their learning. Parents are kept up to date with their child’s progress through the parent portal of our database “Engage”, which also allows for direct contact between families and tutors. Homework All students are given homework on a weekly basis to help reinforce what has been learnt in class or as an introduction to a new topic. Active Learning Students learn best when they actively participate in their learning and are encouraged to be creative and analytical in their thinking. 4 How we teach OUR PRIMARY YEARS FRAMEWORK We ensure that learning is relevant to each child and track individual progress carefully. Using the Primary Years Framework, we plan activities to support the 4 areas of learning: Collaboration: During lessons students may work individually, in pairs or collaboratively in groups. Students are given many opportunities to develop their speaking abilities, not only in class, but also through participating in class 1 assemblies and school shows. Assemblies provide an opportunity to celebrate and strengthen our school and to develop social and cultural values as well as critical thinking in a global society. Confidence: Our children, from a very young age, learn to apply their knowl- edge-based learning, which will serve them for the future. We also give a high priority to develop the core skills that they will use throughout their lives: confi- 2 dence in public speaking, team work, problem solving, empathy, independence, respect, tolerance, a sense of fairness and the value of shared success through collaborative projects. Behaviour: A philosophy of praise, discipline and positive reinforcement lies at the heart of all our teaching. There are well established systems and rules in 3 place to reward effort, academic achievement and considerate behaviour; as well as addressing inappropriate behaviour. Respect: Whilst being a multicultural school, with families from all over the world, we teach fundamental British values. These are democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different 4 faiths and beliefs. We consider language development to be the key to our students’ education. 5 Your child’s journey WE CREATE A NUTURING ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUR CHILD Independence We believe that education is most successful when there is a strong partnership between school and home. We aim for all of our students to become independent learners, who are well motivated and enjoy learning. Our students take pride in their individual and collective achievements and respect the multicultural society in which we live. Environment Children are entitled to work and play in a calm and safe environment which supports their learning and wellbeing. We have a positive approach to behaviour and believe that encouragement and praise are vital in helping children to develop a positive self- image. Extra-Curricula We believe that education must extend beyond the classroom. Each year a number of trips take place to enrich learning within a practical context. We also offer a wide range of extracurricular activities. Yearly Events Throughout the year students participate in a number of different activities for special occasions including Halloween, Christmas, Easter and local festivals, such as la Magdalena. 6 6 Excellence in English for all our students.
