At the University of Indonesia, the Tarbiyah movement, originally known as the dakwah campus movement, has moved further into campus politics. Using historical methods, data collected from various sources concluded that the Tarbiyah movement contributed greatly to instilling Islamic values within the University of Indonesia student movement. The planting of Islamic values was made easier after Tarbiyah activists controlled the student senate. The values embedded by the Tarbiyah movement, derived from the proliferation of halaqah (mentoring) in musholla or mosques on campus, religious mentoring activities for new students, and the large number of students who look syar'i. The existence of this research will add new varieties of study on Tarbiyah Movement. Previously, the study of Tarbiyah was only about the entry of the movement to Indonesia until its transformation into a political party. However, this paper specifically discloses the effects and impacts caused by the development of the Tarbiyah movement within the University of Indonesia. 1 INTRODUCTION the student movement at UI. Tesis ini menunjukkan bahwa terdapat kesinambungan antara gerakan dakwah yang dipelopori oleh Shift dengan gerakan yang pernah ada sebelumnya di Bandung, yaitu masjid masih menjadi sentral dalam gerakan dakwah. Namun terdapat juga perubahan dari gerakan sebelumnya yaitu aktor-aktor yang berperan penting dalam gerakan tidak lagi berasal dari tokoh yang memiliki pengakuan di bidang keagamaan baik secara figur pribadi maupun afiliasi dengan lembaga agama yang memiliki otoritas. Mereka justru lahir dari komunitas subkultur anak muda. Perbedaan latar belakang komunitas di kalangan anak muda yang berkaitan dengan perbedaan budaya dan kelas sosial membuat aspirasi mereka berbeda. Upaya akomodasi terhadap aspirasi yang berbeda tersebut melahirkan gerakan dakwah jalanan yang semakin beragam. Pada akhirnya otoritas yang dimiliki oleh figur maupun gerakan tidak terpusat pada satu ustaz dan satu gerakan tetapi menyebar kepada banyak ustaz dan juga gerakan sekaligus menyempit pada segmentasi audiensi tertentu.

If all families have been successfully made “Islamic”, people and the country will follow suit. Preparing the family as the basis of making up society and the establishment of an Islamic state is, therefore, urgent. One of the ways is to match young men and women to get married through taʻāruf or “Islamic introduction”, which goes against the very popular trend of dating among youths nowadays. In addition to be practiced within Tarbiyah members, marriage is also promoted to the larger public. This group of Islamists use most contemporary modern media to expand their influence. By doing so, this kind of movement will have a tremendous and strong socio-political implication in the long run of Indonesian politics.     Youth, Mosques and Islamic Activism: Islamic Source Books in University-based Halaqah1 Hilman Latief* Abstract This paper discusses the emergent religious enthusiasm among young Indone- sian Muslims, with special reference to the university-based halaqah activists in Yogyakarta. Halaqah is a growing phenomenon of socio-religious expression amongst university students. Within the Islamic movement, it has had a new and powerful influence on Indonesian Muslim youth cultures. It provides a sys- tem within which young Muslims seeking a new personal or collective social identity can cultivate their religious orientation and thirst for knowledge. The regional spread of halaqah seems to correspond to the rapidly increasing number of publishers producing the halaqah reference materials that the movement desires, and making them readily available in the market. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive account of the religious, political, and cultural orien- tations of halaqah members by examining the reading materials circulating within halaqah. It argues that campus-based mosques are controlled by two kinds of halaqah, namely Salafi halaqah and Tarbiyah halaqah. The findings also show that Indonesia’s two mainstream moderate-traditionalist and reformist Islamic movements, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama, are less favored by university-based halaqah activists. This is partly because, although both these Indonesian mass organizations are faith-based civil society associations, they both overlook campus-based mosques in their main da‘wa agenda.     Chapter 2: Jemaah Tarbiyah and Islamisation in Indonesia The long process of Islamisation1 that planted its roots in the society of the Indonesian archipelago in the 14th century is by no means yet finished. It continues to bring about change and continuation, from conversion to re-islamisation.2 After Islam gained its roots in Indonesia until now, all efforts of Islamisation carried out by its agents mainly have aimed to bring the followers of Islam closer to practices of orthodox Islam (reform).3 Both traditionalists and modernist have been known for their role in carrying out the reform in different degree and approaches. This ongoing process has also manifested interesting and distinct phenomena through time, depending on the varying contexts of social and cultural change. Over the centuries, Islam has played a major role, not only in shaping society but also in directing the course of Indonesian politics. The fact that Muslims are the majority in Indonesia is considered clear evidence of the importance of Islam. However, to what extent Islam has been adopted at the contemporary structural level is still debatable. In order to gain sufficient knowledge about its role, two distinct approaches: cultural and political, in the Islamisation process need to be presented.4 While cultural approach tends to focus itself effort in Islamising the society, the political (structural) approach prefer to rely on structural and political power in carrying out its Islamisation agenda.5 Thus the emergence of Jemaah Tarbiyah in Indonesia is not an isolated phenomenon, but part of the general process of Islamisation. Through a detailed study of the model and approach of Jemaah Tarbiyah in furthering its dakwah or predication, we can discover the religious and political orientations of the movement, and in particular, the movement's view of the relationship between religion and the state in Indonesia.

Luqman Nul Hakim i Abstract In post-authoritarian Indonesia, but particularly following the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Islamism has become a contentious matter of scholarly debate. The prominent accounts emerging from security and democratisation studies place much analytical weight on ideology and culture by often portraying the relationship between Islam and politics in essentialist fashion, associating the dynamics of Islamism with interpretations of Islamic doctrine or the contest between moderate and radical Muslims. The institutionalist literature, on the contrary, explains the rise of Islamism as the result of the weak capacity of the state following the fall of the centralised New Order authoritarian regime. Another variant draws attention to the moderation of Islamic politics as the result of participation in democratic processes, especially electoral politics. Yet, such linear and teleological explanations obscure the complex circumstances that establish the different trajectories of Islamism. They also fail to comprehend how the prevalence of Islamist discourse on power struggles in the current democracy can produce a more conservative and illiberal form of Islamism. In contrast, this thesis utilises the politics of hegemony approach as developed in the traditions of political discourse theory.
