RENART RETOLD: THE ORIGINAL V AN DEN VOS REYNAERDE Theresia de Vroom University of Southern Califo~nia The twelfth-century Dutch beast epic, Van den Vos Reynaerde, is distinguished from all preceding versions of the tale by a final and original episode concerning a hidden treasure at Kriekenput) The story of the stolen and buried treasure is concocted by the fox to ;trick the king and Queen of the animal kingdom into pardoning Reyl)aerde's heinous crimes and releasing him. This story not only contaIns the original / portion of the poem but also describes the attitude of the Van den Vos Reynaerde (VdVR) toward originality. Like the fox, Willem the poet entices his audience to another tale about Reynaerde by luring them with the treasure of tales buried in the preceding French branches of the Roman de Rellart (in particular Branche I from which he borrows liberally). At the same time he self -consciously and comically discusses his fox-like foraging for poetic originality which, according to the original adventure at Kriekenput, is no more tangible than an illusory buried treasure. Before examining the relation of the Kriekenput story to the rest of VdVR, we turn to the opening of Willem's poem where he first differentiates his tale from those that precede it. An examination of the Dutch prologue in relation to the French prologues reveals that the dilemma of writing an original poem given unoriginal material can be solved in a variety of ways. Willem's solution to this problem, revealed in the Kriekenput episode at the end of the poem, is already evident in his prologue, the latest addition to a rich palimpsest made by the preceding French prologues. -

March 2012 ABSTRACT This study is a comparison of the human presence in the text of Robert Henryson’s Fables1, and that of William Caxton’s 1481 edition of The History of Reynard the Fox (Blake:1970). The individual examples of Henryson’s Fables looked at are those that may be called the ‘Reynardian’ fables (Mann:2009); these are The Cock and the Fox; The Fox and the Wolf; The Trial of the Fox; The Fox, the Wolf, and the Cadger, and The Fox, the Wolf, and the Husbandman.2 These fables were selected to provide a parallel focus, through the main protagonists and sources, with the text of The History of Reynard the Fox. -

Each of three major manuscript “families” of the Roman de Renart constitutes a compilation of between 26 and 31 episodes with about 30,000 verses. In each family over 60 different saints are invoked, identified based on examination of their life, legends, and geographic placement. The import and semiotics of the frequent invocation of saints has been neglected throughout the centuries. It deserves study because calling upon a particular saint can encapsulate a rich deposit of narrative, geographic, and symbolic information that the numerous, mostly anonymous, authors manipulated to humorous, ironic, or subversive effect. Within this mixture of forms and voices, the three beast poems, Virgils Gnat, Prosopopoia or Mother Hubberds Tale, and Muiopotmos are unified by shared traditions in Classical Aesopic beast fable and medieval beast poetry. Reading these three poems as a set reveals Spenser’s interpretation of the literary history of beast poetry as one of several competing forms of order. The beast poems show ordering schemes of hierarchy, proportion, imitative practice, and dialectic, yet none of these is dominant. Thus, in the overall Menippean mixture that makes up the volume, the beast poems present an additional and less obvious mixture: the kinds of order available to a literary artist. Spenser’s Complaints volume was the object of some censorship, and scholars still debate whether he or his printer, William Ponsonby, designed the book. The many kinds of organization demonstrated by the beast poems coalesce to form a theory of contestatory imitation in which the dominant order is disorder itself, represented by the ruin brought about by time’s passage. -
