Bütün Dünya-March 2015 THE WORDS “THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MEHMETS AND THE JOHNNIES” ENGRAVED ON THE 1915 GALLIPOLI MONUMENTS DO NOT BELONG TO ATATÜRK. PART I. Cengiz Özakıncı While Lüleburgaz Atatürk Elementary School teacher Tahsin Özeken is walking in the Anafarta Valley on April 15, 1977 with a booklet published in 1969 titled “Documented Eceabat Guide”, he meets an old Australian who was lieutenant in the “ANZAC” troops that came to Gallipoli under the command of the English in 1915 and reports to him the following expression that the guide states to belong to Atatürk: "Those heroes that shed their blood in this country! You are in the soil of a friendly country. Rest in peace. You are side by side, bosom to bosom with Mehmets... The mothers who sent their sons from faraway countries! Wipe away your tears. Your sons are in our bosom. They are in peace. After having lost their lives on this soil, they have become our sons as well." “Documented Eceabat Guide”, First Edition, 1969 The Australian former ANZAC soldier is delighted by the words that declare as heroes those that came to invade Gallipoli in 1915; he notes down Özeken’s postal address and the words shown to belong to Atatürk in the guide. When he returns to his country, he forwards these words to the "Veteran Anzacs Association". The chairperson of the "Gallipoli Fountains Honor Committee" in Australia, Alan J. Campbell, considers to add this onto the monument in construction and asks Özeken in a letter dated September 12, 1977 to send him information accompanied by the documents related to the date and place that Atatürk said these words.

  • The Origin of the Gross Alpha and Beta Radiation Values of the Waters of Çanakkale Strait (Çanakkale/Turkey)
Kam E, Önce M, Yümün S. JOTCSA. 2017; 4(3): 729-738. RESEARCH ARTICLE The Origin of the Gross Alpha and Beta Radiation Values of the Waters of Çanakkale Strait (Çanakkale/Turkey) Erol KAM*1 , Melike ÖNCE2 and Sevinç YÜMÜN2 1. Yildiz Technical University, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Physics Department, Davutpaşa Campus, 34220 Esenler/ İstanbul, TURKEY. 2. Namık Kemal University, Çorlu Engineering Faculty, Environmental Engineering Department, 59860 Çorlu, Tekirdağ, TURKEY. Abstract: This study is an evaluation of radioactivity the waters of the Çanakkale Strait. The gross alpha- and gross beta-radioactivity counts (Berthold, LB770-PC 10-Channel Low-Level Planchet Counter) were calculated for seawater samples taken from eight different regions of the Çanakkale Strait (Şevketiye, Seddülbahir, Lapseki, Kumkale, Burhanlı, Dereliman, Eceabat, and Gelibolu). In the samples, the gross alpha-radiation ranged between 0.064 and 0.046Bq/L and the gross beta-radiation ranged between 14.325 and 10.532 Bq/L. The highest gross alpha- radiation concentration was measured at Gelibolu (0.064 Bq/L) while the lowest (0.046 Bq/L) was measured at Şevketiye. The highest value for gross beta-radiation concentration (14.325 Bq/L) was measured in Seddülbahir, and the lowest value (10.532 Bq/L) was measured in Dereliman. The gross alpha-radiation concentrations measured by the Turkish Atomic Energy Authority in Çanakkale’s drinking and utility water ranged between 0.05 and 0.400 Bq/L, and the highest values (0.300 to 0.400Bq/L) were found in the Ezine county. Gross beta-radiation concentrations ranged from 0.05 to 0.500 Bq/L, and the highest values (from 0.400 to 0.500 Bq/L) were recorded in Lapseki province.

  • Name of Monument: Kilitbahir [Kilid Al-Bahr] Fortress
Name of Monument: Kilitbahir [kilid al-bahr] Fortress Location: Kilitbahir - Eceabat, Çanakkale, Turkey Date of Monument: Hegira 866 / AD 1463 Period / Dynasty: Early Ottoman Patron(s): Sultan Mehmed II ‘the Conqueror’, (his second reign r. AH 855– 86 / AD 1451–81); the outer structure expanded during the reign of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent (r. AH 926–974 / AD 1520–1566). Description: Some time after the conquest of Istanbul, the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II, intending to take control of the Dardanelles, built two fortresses at the narrowest point of the Straits, one on the Anatolian side, and this one, Kilitbahir Fortress, on the European side. Sultaniye or çimenlik Fortress on the Anatolian side was the first to be built; Kilitbahir was the second fortress that Sultan Mehmed II ordered to be built, and because of its location, the fortress was called kilid al-bahr, i.e. lock of the sea. Its plan gives it a special place among Turkish fortresses. The village of Kilitbahir, behind the fortress, takes its name from it. Kilitbahir Fortress occupies a rectangular area measuring approximately 220 m x 120 m. It consists of two outer fortresses (one to the north and one to the south); and one inner fortress with a central tower. The outer fortress to the north was the first to be built, in the period of Sultan Mehmed II. It is surrounded by 4-m high walls. The section of wall which once ran parallel to the shoreline no longer survives. It is known that originally there were large moats around the outer fortress, and that it was entered through gates on the north and south sides which were accessed by suspended bridges.

  • Map 51 Thracia Compiled by E.N
Map 51 Thracia Compiled by E.N. Borza, 1994 with the assistance of G. Reger Introduction Mainland: see Introduction to Map 50. Islands For Thasos in particular, the harvest of toponyms and sites is very rewarding, and grows every year with the work of the Franco-Hellenic archaeological teams that continue to scour the island. The map marks only a selection of the sites that could have been shown here, and possibly a rather arbitrary one at that. As on other islands rich in towers, only a selection is marked (again, perforce somewhat arbitrarily); all are shown as forts without prejudice to their actual function (see Bon 1930; and above all Osborne 1986), except for two of the three structures identified as lighthouses by Kozelj (1989). Omitted are the potteries that seem to be coming to light with bewildering frequency (Garlan 1996). For a variety of reasons, Imbros remains underexplored.
