Additionally, the game marked the sixth occurrence in NHL history where a team won the game after allowing an empty net goal. However, in four of the prior five instances, each empty net goal was scored when the goalie was pulled during a delayed penalty and an own goal was scored. In the instance where the goalie wasn't pulled during a delayed penalty (New York vs. Detroit, April 5, 1970), the Rangers pulled their goaltender during a power play in an effort to add to their season goal total in an to win a tiebreaker for the playoffs, allowing two empty net goals in the process. The Capitals are the first team in NHL history to allow an empty-net goal in the final minute of regulation while trying to win the game and eventually win the game in any fashion.

TOP FIVE CAPS FACTS Cardiac Caps - Sunday’s win over the Sharks marked the Capitals’ 14th comeback win of the season, tied with the St. Louis Blues for the most in 2019-20. Additionally, their six multi-goal comeback wins lead the NHL and are one more than the next closest team (Dallas and Florida: 5). The Capitals are 12-8-2 this season when they allow the game's first goal, the second-best point percentage (.545) in the NHL (New York Islanders: 11-7-1, .579 point percentage). The Capitals also hold the second-highest point percentage when trailing after the first period (7-5-2, .500 point percentage), second only to the Islanders (7-6-0, .538 point percentage) and the highest point percentage when trailing after two periods (6-8-1, .400 point percentage).

OT Winners - Lars Eller's overtime goal marked his first of the season, his third of his career and his second as a Capital. This year, six different Capitals have scored an overtime goal (Lars Eller, Dmitry Orlov, T.J. Oshie, Alex Ovechkin, Jakub Vrana, Tom Wilson), more than any other team in the NHL. The Capitals have six different overtime goal scorers for the first time since 2011-12.

7 at 10 - Eller's overtime goal marked his 10th goal of the season. The Capitals now have seven players with at least 10 goals (Alex Ovechkin: 24; Jakub Vrana: 18; T.J. Oshie and Evgeny Kuznetsov: 16; John Carlson and Tom Wilson: 13; Lars Eller: 10) - tied with the Colorado Avalanche for the most in the NHL. Five Capitals are on pace to reach the 20 goal mark this season, with Eller on pace for 19, which would be a personal career high. Last season, the Capitals were tied with the for the most players with at least 20 goals (seven), however, Washington was the only team that did not acquire any of their 20-goal scorers via trade at some point during the season.

Approaching 500 - Tom Wilson is four games shy of reaching the 500 game mark. He would become the 28th player in franchise history to reach the mark and would be the third player from the 2012 NHL Draft class to play 500 games (Alex Galchenyuk: 523 games; Morgan Rielly: 513 games). Wilson is entering the game against Ottawa with points in four of his last seven games (1g, 4a) and 27 points on the season. Wilson is on pace for a 25 goal and 51-point season, which would surpass his career high of 22 goals and 40 points set last season. Over his last 82 games, which began on Jan. 10, 2019, Wilson has recorded 22 goals and 24 assists. Additionally, Wilson is on pace for 123 penalty minutes this year, which would set a new career low after recording 128 penalty minutes last season.

Johnny All-Star - John Carlson was selected to his second straight NHL All-Star Game. He becomes the seventh defenseman in franchise history to receive multiple All-Star Game selections. This season, he ranks first among defensemen in points (52) and assists (39), tied for second in goals (13) and tied for fifth among all players in assists, trailing only Edmonton’s Connor McDavid (42) and Leon Draisaitl (41), Boston’s Brad Marchand (40) and Florida's Jonathan Huberdeau (40). Carlson became the first defenseman since Paul Coffey in 1994-95 to record 50 points in his team’s first 40 games and eclipsed former Capital Mike Green’s 43 game mark in 2008-09 (22g, 28a), establishing a new franchise record among defensemen. Only five defensemen, including Carlson and Coffey, have recorded 50 points in 40 games since 1979-80 (Phil Housley, Brian Leetch and Al MacInnis). Carlson is on pace for 99 points over an 82-game season. Only five defensemen in NHL history have recorded more than 100 points in a season (Bobby Orr: six times; Paul Coffey: five times; Denis Potvin, Al MacInnis and Brian Leetch: each once).

QUICK HITS

HistOvi – At 682 career goals, Alex Ovechkin is three goals shy of passing Teemu Selanne (684) for the 11th most goals in NHL history. On pace for 46 goals this season, Ovechkin, who turned 34 on Sept. 17, is aiming to become the second player in NHL history to record at least 50 goals in a season at the age of 34 or older (John Bucyk: 51 goals in 1970-71 at the age of 35).

Sammy - Ilya Samsonov (11-2-1) became the first goaltender in franchise history to record 11 wins within his first 13 starts. Among rookie goaltenders with at least six games started, Samsonov ranks first in points percentage (.821), goals against average (2.33) and save percentage (.918). Additionally, Samsonov ranks seventh in wins by a rookie Russian-born goaltender in NHL history. On pace for 21 wins this season, Samsonov would rank third in wins by a Russian rookie goaltender in NHL history, trailing only Evgeni Nabokov (34) and Sergei Bobrovsky (28), who each played 77 and 54 games, respectively, in their rookie seasons. Currently, Samsonov has the highest save percentage among Russian rookie goaltenders with at least 10 games and the second-lowest goals against average (Nabokov: 2.19 GAA).

Evens for V - Jakub Vrana has three goals in his last two games. This season, All 18 of Vrana's goals have come at even strength, which is tied with Chicago's Patrick Kane for third in the NHL.

Streaking Kuzy - Evgeny Kuznetsov has recorded a point in five straight games (4g, 3a).

INDIVIDUAL NOTES

COACH SMITH: D.J. Smith was introduced as the Senators' 14th head coach in franchise history on May 23, 2019. A native of Windsor, Ont., Smith spent the four previous NHL seasons as an assistant coach with the Toronto Maple Leafs -- the team against which he made his NHL head coaching debut on Oct. 2. Prior to joining the Maple Leafs (which was also the team for which he made his NHL playing debut in 1996-97), Smith guided the Ontario Hockey League's Oshawa Generals to a record of 135-53-3-13 over three campaigns which included his having been recognized as the OHL’s Coach of the Year in 2013-14. One year later, he helped the team capture the Mastercard Memorial Cup.

THREE ALTERNATES FOR NOW: In conjunction with the start of the team's 2019-20 training camp, the Senators announced that the team would deploy three full-time alternate captains this season in veterans Mark Borowiecki, Ron Hainsey and Jean-Gabriel Pageau. For Hainsey, the team's leader in NHL career games played (1,104), the Senators represent the third different NHL club (Atlanta, Carolina) for which he has worn an 'A'. Borowiecki and Pageau, who were selected by the club (in 2008 and 2011) are serving as full- time alternates for the first time in their respective careers. Both players, who each maintain strong community ties in addition to on-ice leadership qualities, were born in Ottawa.

HERE'S JOHNNY: Having reached the 30-point plateau for the third time in his NHL career in Saturday's 5-3 home setback to Tampa Bay, Senators forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau enters tonight's contest in Washington with 172 points over parts of eight seasons but remains in need of at least one point against the Capitals to complete the circuit of having registered at least one point against each of Ottawa's 30 NHL opponents. Ahead of what will be his 17th career game against Washington (tied for 10th most among each of the team's opponents), the Capitals are the lone team to have stymied Pageau in holding him scoreless with what is an opponent-low minus-nine plus/minus rating. Pageau has recorded at least two points against each of the Senators' other 29 opponents, including the Golden Knights against whom he's faced only three times.

ALL-TIME LEADERS: Chris Phillips is the Senators' all-time leader in games played (1,179) ... Daniel Alfredsson leads in goals (426), assists (682) and points (1,108) ... Anderson leads in wins (197).
