This thesis examines and analyses three literary classics; ‘Giovanni’s Room’ by James Baldwin, Alice Walker’s ‘The Color Purple,’ and ‘Brokeback Mountain’ by Annie Proulx, from a bisexual perspective. I have sought out to reveal, emphasize, and analyze bisexual elements present in the respective texts from a bisexual literary standpoint. This aspect of the texts has been ignored by most critics, and I believe it is paramount to begin to acknowledge the importance and significance of reading bisexually.

Michael Mirasol, “A Great Love Story: ‘Brokeback Mountain,’” Chicago Sun-Times, July 1, 2011 http://blogs.suntimes.com/foreignc/2011/07/brokeback-mountain.html What's the last great love story you've seen on film? I don't mean your typical "rom-coms" with contrived meet-cutes that rely heavily on celebrity star power. I'm talking about a genuine romance between two richly defined characters. If your mind draws a blank, you're not alone. Hollywood, along with much of the filmmaking world, seems to have either forgotten how to portray love affairs in ways that once made us swoon. Whatever the reason, be it due to our changing times or priorities, we might not see any significant ones for some time. If there is any love story of this kind worth revisiting, it is Ang Lee's BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, which just might be the most moving tale of star-crossed lovers for the past decade. Not many people will remember the film this way, as its two lovers were hardly the kind seen before in major movie romances. Indeed, a story of two cowboys discovering a deep love for each other was bound to cause controversy. Who would dare take on such a subject? Were its motives exploitative? Political? A gimmick? Add in Ang Lee, the celebrated Taiwanese-born director known for ushering the new age of Sino-Cinema to Hollywood, and expectations could not possibly grow further. But grow they did. Once the film won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, a prestige not taken lightly in film circles, interest surged.

  • Brokeback Mountain,” Salon, Dec
Stephanie Zacharek, “Brokeback Mountain,” Salon, Dec. 9, 2005 http://entertainment.salon.com/2005/12/09/brokeback_2/ The premise of Ang Lee’s “Brokeback Mountain,” based on an Annie Proulx short story, is something we’ve never seen before in a mainstream picture: In 1963 two young cowboys meet on the job and, amid a great deal of confusion and denial, as well as many fervent declarations of their immutable heterosexuality, fall in love. Their names — straight out of a boy’s adventure book of the 1930s, or maybe just the result of a long think on the front porch at some writers’ colony — are Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger). The attraction between Jack and Ennis is at first timid and muted, the sort of thing that might have amounted to nothing more than a vague, sleep-swollen fantasy. But when they finally give in to that attraction, in a cramped tent out in rural Wyoming — the sheep they’re supposed to be guarding are far off on a hillside, most likely being circled by lip-smacking coyotes — the very sound of their urgent unbuckling and unzipping is like a ghost whistling across the plains, foretelling doom and pleasure and everything in between. This early section of “Brokeback Mountain,” in which the men’s minimal verbal communication transmutes into a very intimate sort of carnal chemistry, is the most affecting and believable part of the movie, partly because young love is almost always touching, and partly because for these cowboys — living in a very conventional corner of the world, in a very conventional time — the stakes are particularly high.

Sara Martín Alegre Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona NOTE: Paper presented at the 39th AEDEAN Conference, Universidad de Deusto, Bilbao, Spain, 11-14 November 2015 IMDB Rating (March 2015) Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain (2005) 7.7 ◦ 233,193 voters Bill Condon’s Gods and Monsters (1998), 7.5 ◦ 23,613 voters The rating in the Internet Movie Database (www.imdb.com) for Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain is 7.7 (March 2015). The film that concerns me here, Bill Condon’s Gods and Monsters, does not really lag far behind, with a 7.5 rating. Considering the number of voters–233,193 for Lee’s film, but only 10% of that number (23,613 users) for Condon’s film–the [admittedly silly] question to be asked and answered is why so few spectators have been attracted by Gods and Monsters when the ratings suggest it is as good a film as Brokeback Mountain. As an admirer who has rated both films a superb 9, I wish to consider here which factors have pushed Gods and Monsters to the backward position it occupies, in terms of public and academic attention received, in comparison to the highly acclaimed Brokeback Mountain. 2 Sara Martín Alegre, “Failing to Mainstream the Gay Man: Gods and Monsters” Which factors limit the interest of audiences, reviewers and academics as regards mainstream films about gay men? AGEISM: term coined by physician and psychiatrist Robert Neil Butler “Age-ism reflects a deep seated uneasiness on the part of the young and middle- aged–a personal revulsion and distaste for growing old, disease, disability; and fear of powerlessness, ‘uselessness,’ and death” (1969: 243).

    M. Carmen Gomez-Galisteo “If you can’t fix it you got a stand it”: impossible...: 51 “IF YOU CAN’T FIX IT YOU GOT A STAND IT”:1 IMPOSSIBLE LOVE STORIES, IDENTITY AND MASCULINITY IN “THE LADY WITH THE DOG” AND “BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN” M. Carmen Gomez-Galisteo, UNED (Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia) – Madrid Email: [email protected] Abstract: Despite their apparent dissimilarities (a nineteenth-century Russian story about an adulterous relationship and a twentieth-century story about gay men in the American West), this essay explores how their common exploration of the theme of impossible happy endings and star-crossed lovers brings Anton Chekhov’s “The Lady with the Dog” and Annie Proulx’s “Brokeback Mountain” together in several aspects. This essay will reveal how in both works, the idea of the individual’s identity is closely linked to masculinity and sexuality. How to be a “proper” man for Dmtri as well as for Ennis and Jack, the protagonists of these respective stories, is crucial to an understanding of who they are and will decisively mark the outcome of their relationships and lives. Keywords: impossible love, Anton Chekhov, “The Lady with the Dog,” Annie Proulx, “Brokeback Mountain” (short story), homosexuality, identity.

  • You Know I Ain't Queer … Queering Mediation And
You Know I Ain’t Queer … Queering Mediation and Sexuality in Midnight Cowboy and Brokeback Mountain Isabell B. Johansen Master’s thesis, Media Studies Spring 2009 Department of Media and Communication, University of Oslo 2 “It’s been more than 35 years when people would watch Midnight Cowboy and say ‘What the hell was that all about?’ Well, now we have fully accepted this new genre of cinema: gay westerns!” - Jon Stewart, The 78th Annual Academy Awards (Horvitz, 2006:3). 3 4 ABSTRACT ENGLISH Gay western – why does that sound like a paradox? This is a question that colours this thesis. It is easy enough: Homosexual men are feminine on film and the western is the ultimate masculine cinematic expression. These are established conventions and they colour our expectations. I have studied how Midnight Cowboy (1969) and Brokeback Mountain (2005) mediate the sexuality of the protagonists, and how these representations relate to traditions of Hollywood film. This study of mediation of queer sexualities in American mainstream film is situated within a queer theoretical framework, providing a critical/inquisitive perspective to norms of mediation. Gender and sexuality are mediated through characters, but they are also expressed through other cinematic aspects like setting, soundtrack or genre. In both of the movies western genre elements enhances and underlines the masculinity of the protagonists. Since masculine men in movies are expected to be heterosexual, the sex and the intimate relationships between men become a surprise—both within the diegesis (film universe) and in a film historical context. Sex between men rarely takes place at all in American mainstream movies.

  • WUORINEN Brokeback Mountain
WUORINEN Brokeback Mountain Few short stories have become so quickly and so deeply embedded in the American consciousness as Annie Proulx’s 1997 Brokeback Mountain. First published inThe New Yorker and made into a critically acclaimed 2005 movie, it now animates a starkly modernist opera by Charles Wuorinen, premiered last year at Madrid’s Teatro Real. The characters, and the bleak storyline, now operate almost at the level of myth: we know the narrative arc, the tragic conclusion, even the symbols and speaking tics that define the two cowboys, whose doomed love plays out over decades against the relentlessly hostile backdrop of the conservative American west. The opera, commissioned by Gerard Mortier and premiered only weeks before his death, received mixed but respectful reviews at its premiere. This DVD makes a strong case both for the original production (by Ivo van Hove) and for the opera itself. The music isn’t blithely charismatic like so many contemporary American operas today, and it owes far more to Schoenberg and Berg than to Britten, Bernstein or Copland. If Wuorinen hadn’t expressed interest in setting it to music years ago, it would likely have become yet another pastiche-filled work, passed around the regional opera circuit, where its main virtue would have been to offend no one. Wuorinen’s setting reminds one of Monteverdi – formal, stately and psychologically precise, with spare and often angular vocal lines set against prismatic bursts from the orchestra; the accompaniment oscillates between two basic ideas: hushed, sustained figures that suggest the influence of Debussy, and expressionist, often nervous outbursts.

  • Amy Brancolli, “'Brokeback Mountain': a Tragedy
Amy Brancolli, “‘Brokeback Mountain’: A Tragedy of Love, Lies, Silence,” Houston Chronicle, Dec. 16, 2005. (4 stars) http://www.chron.com/entertainment/movies/article/Brokeback-Mountain-1510394.php Yes, it's a gay cowboy movie. But lazy designations will go only so far with Brokeback Mountain, a film about love and the cost of lying that's exquisite in its beauty, painful in its truths. Directed by Ang Lee (back from The Hulk) and based on a story by E. Annie Proulx, Brokeback Mountain begins in 1963 and ends around 20 years later, at the heart-sore conclusion of an off-and-on affair. Except it's never off and rarely on — and even when it's over, it isn't. For the tragedy that colors this broad Western canvas is a tragedy of inaction as much as action, of fear as much as love. It's the tragedy of silence. In the world of Jack Twist (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Ennis Del Mar (Heath Ledger), two men can't keep house together. They first meet while tending sheep for a rancher (a gruff, steady Randy Quaid) in Wyoming. Ennis stays at base camp on Brokeback Mountain, in charge of supplies and meals. Jack sleeps with the herd to keep predators at bay. It's just the two of them, shell-mouthed Ennis and voluble Jack, and for a while Lee's movie has the homespun, companionable feel that comes from roasting hotdogs by the fire. When a single frigid night turns friends into lovers, these mountain scenes become something more — a refuge, or an island of denial.

Philip French, “Brokeback Mountain,” The Guardian/The Observer, Jan. 7, 2006 http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2006/jan/08/review.features The homoeroticism underlying the western has hardly gone unnoticed and was a particular concern of literary critic Leslie Fiedler. In his 1959 classic, Love and Death in the American Novel, he called the friendship between Indian Chingachgook and pioneer Natty Bumppo in Fenimore Cooper's seminal novels 'an archetypal relationship which haunts the American psyche', in which 'two lonely men bend together over a carefully guarded fire in the virgin heart of the American wilderness'. 'They have forsaken all others for the sake of the austere, almost inarticulate, but unquestioned love that binds them to each other and to the world of nature which they have preferred to civilisation.' In The Return of the Vanishing American, Fiedler remarked that Cooper's 'peculiar brand of sentimentality ... underlies all genuinely mythic descriptions of the West, all true westerns - a kind of Higher Masculine Sentimentality utterly remote from all fables whose Happy End Is Marriage.' Annie Proulx's 1997 short story, “Brokeback Mountain,” took these themes and made the homosexual aspect explicit in a realistic modern setting that surprised and, in some cases, shocked readers of the New Yorker. After having been ill-served by the team that filmed The Shipping News, she has had the good fortune to have her tale somewhat expanded by Ang Lee, the versatile Taiwanese director, whose films include the delightful gay comedy, The Wedding Banquet, and the traditional western, Ride with the Devil, and have it co-scripted (with Diana Ossana) by Larry McMurtry, who has no current peer as a writer on the West and the way its present relates to its mythic past.

THE HIDDEN TRUTH OF JACK TWIST’S CHARACTERIZATION IN BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN MOVIE A GRADUATING PAPER Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for Gaining the Bachelor Degree in English Literature By: DONI DAMARA 13150006 ENGLISH DEPARTMENT FACULTY OF ADAB AND CULTURAL SCIENCES STATE ISLAMIC UNIVERSITY SUNAN KALIJAGA YOGYAKARTA 2017 i ii iii iv THE HIDDEN TRUTH OF JACK TWIST’S CHARACTERIZATION IN BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN MOVIE By: Doni Damara ABSTRACT Brokeback Mountain movie is one of homosexual movies. The story of this movie is complicated; where the main characters in the movie are homosexuals however they have a wife and children. This research focuses on sex, gender, and sexual orientation or desires, which these are, involved in a character in this movie. This movie is interesting to be analyzed because it tells about Jack Twist’s characterization. Jack Twist has two personalities to hide his real identity. In one side, he pretends to be a heterosexual man and plays a role as a straight male. In the other side, he plays a role as a female in the relationship with his boyfriend. The aim of Jack’s negotiation as a gay is to reject the discrimination from outside. It is because homosexual is a minority while heterosexual is majority among communities in the world. This is also the reason why the researcher focuses on homosexuality. The researcher wants to analyze how a homosexual person can live in a society, where he can hide his desire and his relationship with another man. This research uses queer theory of Michael Foucault, discourse theory of James Paul Gee, and film theory of Ami Villarejo to achieve the result of this problem, where Jack Twist successes to negotiate his real identity.
