She was a divisive and controversial figure, lionised by some and reviled by others, yet the unique role she played in British political history was recognised by all. She established a new common sense within British politics, replacing the old post-war consensus with a new regime orientated towards free markets, privatisation and labour flexibility. This eCollection draws together a range of commentators who reflect on this legacy, as well as the life and career of the woman herself. OPENING PANDORA’S BOX David Cameron’s Referendum Gamble on EU Membership Credit: The Economist. By Christina Hull Yale University Department of Political Science Adviser: Jolyon Howorth April 21, 2014 Abstract This essay examines the driving factors behind UK Prime Minister David Cameron’s decision to call a referendum if the Conservative Party is re-elected in 2015. It addresses the persistence of Euroskepticism in the United Kingdom and the tendency of Euroskeptics to generate intra-party conflict that often has dire consequences for Prime Ministers. Through an analysis of the relative impact of political strategy, the power of the media, and British public opinion, the essay argues that addressing party management and electoral concerns has been the primary influence on David Cameron’s decision and contends that Cameron has unwittingly unleashed a Pandora’s box that could pave the way for a British exit from the European Union. The establishment of the Jewish state seemed to force people on the left to choose between competing nationalisms - Israeli, Arab and later, Palestinian. Over time, a number of key developments sharpened the dilemma. My central focus is the evolution of thinking about Israel and the Middle East in the British Labour Party. I examine four critical periods: the creation of Israel in 1948; the Suez war in 1956; the Arab-Israeli war of 1967 and the 1980s, covering mainly the Israeli invasion of Lebanon but also the intifada. In each case, entrenched attitudes were called into question and longer-term shifts were triggered in the aftermath. -

Encomium: Clare Short - 22 September 2015 Vice-Chancellor, I have the very great honour to present Clare Short on whom the Board of Governors and the Academic Board wish to confer an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Letters. In three days’ time the Heads of State and Government of the 193 member States of the United Nations, meet in New York (25-27 September 2015) to agree a set of new global goals for the sustainable development of humanity and of our planet. The UN members will pledge to end poverty and hunger once and for all; to combat inequalities; to ensure the lasting protection of the planet and its resources; and to create conditions for sustainable, inclusive and sustained economic growth and shared prosperity. This will be an historic agreement on a comprehensive and far-reaching set of universal Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). If they are realized, they will transform for the better the world in which we all live. The SDGs replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Clare Short was the British Secretary of State for International Development when the ground-breaking MDGs were established. Indeed, Clare established the Department for International Development (DFID) as a new Ministry after the 1997 general election, to promote policies for sustainable development and the elimination of poverty. Myles Wickstead a senior civil servant worked in the newly created DFID worked closely with Clare on the White Paper 'Eliminating World Poverty: A Challenge for the 21st Century' which was published just six months into the new Government. Myles says that some described her as a breath of fresh air; those who knew her best would perhaps describe her as more of a whirlwind or hurricane, but one which generally navigated her way with considerable skill and dexterity around potential obstacles in her path. -

The piece discusses the ramifications of these developments in relation to the Labour party's ideological response to mass communication and the role now played by external media in the internal affairs of this organisation. The paper also seeks to assess how campaigns have historically developed in a country with an almost continuous, century long cycle of elections. Keywords: Political marketing, British elections, Labour Party, historical campaigning, party organisation, campaign professionals. Dominic Wring is Programme Director and Lecturer in Communication and Media Studies at Loughborough University. He is also Associate Editor (Europe) of this journal. PRESS RELEASE | LONDON FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 5 MARCH 2019 ARCHIVE OF TONY BENN ACQUIRED FOR THE NATION NEGOTIATED THROUGH THE ACCEPTANCE IN LIEU SCHEME WITH THE ASSISTANCE OF CHRISTIE’S The archive of Tony Benn (3 April 1925 – 14 March 2014), Labour’s longest-serving MP, has been negotiated to the nation, accepted in lieu of inheritance tax and permanently allocated to the British Library, in accordance with the condition attached to its offer. The thorough archive was accumulated by Benn during his lifetime, beginning in his early youth, when he first started to keep a formal diary and associated papers (the earliest volume was written by Benn at the age of 9). It then spans the rest of his life, providing rich documentation of his active political career as well as a substantial collection of source material reflecting the history of the UK during this time. “We are pleased that this substantial archive with its considerable research value will be added to the British Library collections of contemporary archives, available to all those interested in post-war British politics and society, into the Labour Party and the Labour movement, as well as into the long and influential career of Tony Benn himself,” commented Ruth Cornett, Director, Heritage and Taxation Advisory Service, and Thomas Venning, Head of Department, Books & Manuscripts of Christie’s. Benn was a Member of Parliament for 47 years and served as a Cabinet minister in the Harold Wilson and James Callaghan administrations in the 1960s and 1970s. In 1960 he inherited a peerage on his father’s death (as 2nd Viscount Stansgate), which prevented him from continuing to serve as an MP. -

Reports Beyond Trump’s “Deal of the Century” *Clare Short June 24 2018 Al Jazeera Centre for Studies Tel: +974-40158384 [email protected] http://studies.aljazeera.n Ivanka Jerusalem [Getty] Abstract In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, published on November 11, 2016, a few weeks before his inauguration, President Donald Trump said that he wanted to help resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He described the conflict as “the war that never ends”; and what he had in mind was “the ultimate deal”. As he bragged about his deal making skills, he added, “I'd like to do …. the deal that can't be made. And do it for humanity's sake”. (1) He went on to repeat this commitment to reaching a “deal” on a number of occasions saying that he was optimistic that he could get this done. He met Palestinian Authority President Abbas on May 3, 2017 in Washington and visited Israel and the Palestinian Authority a little later in the month, in the course of his first visit abroad, always expressing optimism; but, never giving a hint of what he was proposing. Some analysts argued that he might even deliver what he calls “the deal of the century” because he is such an unconventional politician. (2) Mr. Abbas met President Trump again in the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly meeting on September 20, 2017 and thanked him for his support. “If this is proof of anything…. it's a test of the seriousness of your Excellency, Mr. President, to achieve the “deal of the century” in the Middle East during this year or in the coming months, God willing” Abbas said through an interpreter. -

The Lessons of Tony Benn as a Cabinet Minister: Breaking the Rules and Paying the Price Much has recently been written about the legacy of Tony Benn - his campaigning efforts, the effect he had on both the Labour Party and the wider political landscape especially during the onset of Thatcherism and finally of course his diary writing. Less though has been said about his time in Government, where in many ways it could be argued he failed to fully use the opportunities presented to him as a holder of ministerial office. At the same time, Benn’s experience in government, particularly in the 1970s, reveals how officials could thwart a radical minister in the wake of behaviour they regarded as falling outwith the accepted Whitehall rules. Crucially, the lessons of Benn’s time in Cabinet illustrates that if a minister fails to build alliances with either ministerial colleagues or department officials, he or she is unlikely to be effective in making policy. The commentary below draws on extensive interviews conducted two decades ago with Benn, his Cabinet colleagues and various officials who served under him.i During the 1974-9 Labour Administration, Benn served as Secretary of State for Industry (‘74-5) and subsequently Energy (‘75-9) and was intent on implementing Labour’s manifesto. However, a combination of officials and political opponent’s effectively thwarted his attempts to be a socialist Secretary of State. What is perhaps most striking is the explicit ways in which senior civil servants were prepared to defy their minister, but also how Benn afforded them the opportunity to break the normally symbiotic relationship between the two by refusing to trust departmental officials.
