    STOP PAINTING STOP PAINTING PETER FISCHLI When I was young the Zeitgeist was claiming that “painting is dead.” Jörg Immendorff’s well- known, paradoxical, fast-scrawled painting Hört auf zu malen, half-correctly translated as “Stop painting,” obviously crossed my mind. It was already announcing that its funeral would most likely be postponed, since it had the character of a command refuse. I thought of some of the older funeral anno- uncements, starting with Paul Delaroche’s famous quote: “From today, painting is dead.” [...] While the ones who believed in the end of painting were mourning at the funeral procession, a very lively knock knock knock came out of the black painted coffin. As time passed, I began to imagine what a pan- optic exhibition of these artistic positions might look like. [...] I imagined a show that would be a kaleido- scope of repudiated gestures, including the critique of those repudiated gestures: the narration of the end of painting and the end of the narration of the end of painting. I was looking for a story that gives you the spacious and comfortable feeling of simpli- fication and, as a side dish, the justified suspicion of reducing complexity. Something like “the five crises of painting” could work — could make sense and pretend to make sense at the same time. Rupture 1. I started with Delaroche’s desper- ation and collapse at seeing photography coming into the world, which took away the determination of representation from painting. Why make a painting of Napoleon crossing the Alps if one could produce an image with an apparatus? [...] Within the new media surroundings, painting had to find new ways of posi- tioning itself, refusing an ending in a coffin.

    Press Release Mazzoleni at Art Basel Piero Manzoni: Achromes / Linee 15 – 18 June 2017 Booth C8 Mazzoleni is pleased to announce its participation in Art Basel’s European edition for the first time this June with a solo presentation of Piero Manzoni (1933–1963) in the Feature sector of the fair. Manzoni is widely considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Known for his ironic and playful methodology, he radically transformed the artistic language of European art and developed a lasting reputation for prefiguring the Conceptual Art movement, among others. This exhibition will show examples from two of the artist’s most well known series of works, the Achromes (1955–1963) and the Linee (1959–1963). It follows the gallery’s acclaimed 2016 exhibition of the artist at its London space, ‘PIERO MANZONI Achromes: Linea Infinita’, which was the first exhibition to focus uniquely on the relationship between these two bodies of work. Bringing Achromes and Linee works into dialogue once more at Art Basel will allow Mazzoleni to continue the conversation around Manzoni’s fascination with the ‘infinite’, an idea conceptually explored by both series. From 1959 Manzoni focused entirely on attempting to manifest the infinite in his work, saying in his 1960 text Free Dimension that, ‘this indefinite surface, uniquely alive, even if in its material contingency cannot be infinite is, however, infinitable, infinitely repeatable, without a resolution to its continuity.’ The Linee were the first three-dimensional works Manzoni produced and therefore his first escape from the two-dimensional medium of painting he and his contemporaries found so restrictive and outmoded.

Marinetti, the leader of futurism, theorized parole in libertà (or “words-in- freedom”) in his manifestoes, numerous futurists participated in this verbo-visual practice. Although paroliberismo was a characteristic form of expression that dominated futurist poetics preceding, during, and after World War I, little scholarly work has been done on the “words-in- freedom” authored by women and how they might differ from those created by their male counterparts. Women, outcast as they were by futurism both in theory and often in practice, participated nevertheless in the avant-garde movement known for announcing its “disdain for women” in its “Founding Manifesto” of 1909. This dissertation takes an interdisciplinary approach to analyzing the position of the female futurist and her mixed-media contributions during the years in which paroliberismo was carried out in futurist circles. I examine rare and under-studied verbo-visual works done by women between 1914 and 1924.

The Animate Object Of Kinetic Art, 1955-1968 Abstract This dissertation examines the development of kinetic art—a genre comprising motorized, manipulable, and otherwise transformable objects—in Europe and the United States from 1955 to 1968. Despite kinetic art’s popularity in its moment, existing scholarly narratives often treat the movement as a positivist affirmation of postwar technology or an art of mere entertainment. This dissertation is the first comprehensive scholarly project to resituate the movement within the history of performance and “live” art forms, by looking closely at how artists created objects that behaved in complex, often unpredictable ways in real time. It argues that the critical debates concerning agency and intention that surrounded moving artworks should be understood within broader aesthetic and social concerns in the postwar period—from artists’ attempts to grapple with the legacy of modernist abstraction, to popular attitudes toward the rise of automated labor and cybernetics. It further draws from contemporaneous phenomenological discourses to consider the ways kinetic artworks modulated viewers’ experiences of artistic duration.

Copenhagen, Brussels and Amsterdam saw the rise of the expressionism of CoBrA, with both abstract as figurative elements, followed by the art of the informal artists. Most of the time these movements walk by each other which makes it hard to draw exact boundaries.

    Best Most Sensational Balloons: Piero Manzoni’s Corpo d’aria/Fiato d’artista Gregory Tentler Writing to the Danish gallerist Arthur “Addi” Köpke, the Italian artist Piero Manzoni (1933– 1963) described his recently completed pneumatic sculpture kits, Corpi d’aria (Bodies of Air, 1959/1960) as “the best, most sensational things I have done.”1 Coming fast on the controversies that accompanied his recent works, the rolled and canned ink drawings Le linee (The Lines, 1959–1961) raised high hopes in the artist for a strong critical response. Le linee had been vandalized in their August 1959 debut at the Pozzetto Chiuso in Albisola Marina and an interviewer would declare Manzoni mad in print.2 The artist added to the controversy by anonymously penning press releases cited and republished in newspaper accounts of the destructive event.3 When Manzoni exhibited Le linee again in December 1959 at his Galleria Azimut (Milan), he received a three-column savaging in the largest circulation daily newspaper in Italy, Corriere della Sera.4 Manzoni again attempted to continue the controversy. The artist wrote to the review’s author, Leonardo Borgese, on the day his review appeared to invite the critic to a public forum to “better explain to [Borgese] the motives and results of [his] artistic activities.”5 In response to the Corpo d’aria, however, there was near critical silence. Even with the introduction of completed sculptures by the artist (closed with a monogrammed lead seal with an additional per liter fee for Manzoni’s breath) titled Fiato d’artista (The Artist’s Breath, 1960),6 it would not be until 1962 that the act would get a rise out of the Italian press.7 And although the sculpture kits did not elicit the same critical response as the previous canned lines, now reviewing the artist’s brief career reveals their creator’s initial estimation to be correct.
