In Bexar County alone, over 120,000 children are considered food insecure. Of those, it is estimated that 10-20% deal with chronic hunger and lack adequate nutrition to lead a healthy, productive life. Although The Charity Ball Association Federal Nutrition programs provide meals for students during the school CHILDREN BENEFIT ALWAYS week, weekends can be especially challenging for these children.

Snack Pak 4 Kids SA (SP4K-SA) was created to provide weekend food supplements to students who are identifi ed by their teachers, creating food SECURITY for them over the weekend. With the support of partners, donors and volunteers of all ages, SP4K-SA works hard to be a learning enhancement tool for these kids, solving their weekend hunger issue so they can learn during the school week.

In 2018, they were a fi rst time grant recipient from Th e Charity Ball Association to build capacity to serve more deprived children. Th e grant was used to purchase additional warehouse equipment and portable totes to increase ability to deliver nutritious food. It also funded an upgrade to the website that will increase visibility, funding opportunities and Weldon volunteer access, attracting more people to support the mission.

In addition, funds were raised from an innovative raffl e called, “Give $10” which allows the winner to designate Th e Charity Ball Association children’s charity of their choice to receive the total of all the tickets sold. Th is year’s winner, Michele Cadwallader, chose SP4K-SA as the winning Snack Pak 4 Kids charity to further their mission. Giving a voice to hungry kids Sponsored by ANAPAULA AND MARK WATSON III Lyle 20 21 In 2007, then President Kathy Mays Johnson started the first Advocacy Event to raise awareness of the needs of children in Bexar County. The first event honored Respite Care, an organization that provides support for families caring for a child or loved one with special needs. This year, Charity Ball Sponsors hosted 140 families from 8 different charities to an afternoon at Morgan’s Wonderland, sponsored by NuStar Energy Foundation. This annual event engages in a way that is fun for all family members while giving them information about the services and facilities in their Advocacy neighborhood. This is what the Charity Ball Association does best – helping the children of Bexar County. Event 2019

Clarity Child Guidance Center Healing young minds and hearts

Clarity Child Guidance Center exists to transform the lives of Jill Smith Ginny Way children and families. Th ey are the only not-for-profi t mental health treatment center specializing in children ages 3-17 in San Antonio and South Texas. Th eir inpatient and outpatient programs incorporate a range of services including crisis stabilization, psychiatric evaluations, and ongoing therapy.

As you walk through the Clarity campus, one of the most prominent visuals is the pinwheel. When children and families in distress arrive to Clarity, the pinwheel signifi es that this is the place where they can “turn their luck around.” A pinwheel inspires ideas such as childhood innocence, unseen energy, wish fulfi llment, and transformation. Clarity adopted the pinwheel to represent childhood, the innocence of the patients they treat, and of the recovered freedom we wish for them. Th e pinwheel reminds us that their patients are also kids, and that with children, there is always hope.

Th e Charity Ball Association has provided grants totaling over $500K to Clarity Child Guidance Center throughout the years, and they are one of our largest 2019 grant recipients. Th is year’s grant seeks to improve children’s mental health by renovating a hospital unit with paint, fl ooring, anti-ligature Amy Swaney furnishings and hardware. Anti-ligature is essential in the design process for patients suff ering from mental illness to eliminate points where a cord, rope, or bed sheet can be tied to a fi xture that may result in self harm.
