Much of the disillusionment with the NASA space program which set in during the third decade of space flight can be traced to a widening gap between popular expectations and the reality of space exploration. I. The influence of imagination and popular culture on public policy in general: the abolitionist movement, the regulation of food and drugs, the conservation movement, the "winged gospel," cultural fashions in psychology, and administrative reform. The Hugo Award trophy itself has long taken the form of a silver rocket, with the original concept by Jack McKnight and Ben Jason being inspired by the gleaming finned rocket ships of Willy Ley. The exact design has become standardized in recent years and the rockets are currently produced by British fan Peter Weston. The base on which the rocket is mounted is, however, the responsibility of each Worldcon committee, and the design changes each year, usually inspired by the location of the convention. The 2016 Hugo Award trophy base will be designed by artist Sara Felix of Austin, TX (sillysarasue.deviantart.com). Sara works in a variety of media, including resin, clay and shrink plastic. Sara is the current president of ASFA, the Association of Science Fiction and Fantasy Artists (www.asfa-art.org), and also works regularly on science fiction conventions. She chaired ArmadilloCon (Austin's local literary science fiction convention) in 2012; was Head of Advertising for LoneStarCon 3 (the 2013 Worldcon), and Head of Art Programming for LonCon 3 (the 2014 Worldcon). She is currently Deputy Division Head for Marketing at MidAmeriCon 2. -

All over the world Germans were – and since the last attacks on homes for people seeking political asylum still are – linked to the Third Reich. But very few know the actual motives from that time. One hears about the “Aryan master race theory” and the “gassing of the Jews”, but not one percent know about the origin of these. In their schoolbooks the German children are told of the evil Adolf Hitler who apparently, supported by aimed propaganda and mass hypnosis, was the only culprit of those events. They are not told from whom he took his ideology, who had put him into his position and, above all, who had financed him. Actually, 95% of the financial support came from Jewish sources. Interesting, isn’t it? The Allies had quite intentionally removed or forbidden all the books that could have uncovered this, and so today a dark mystic veil lies upon Germany’s recent past. Therefore I consider it more than necessary to shed some light into this dark area, even if some theories will be thought by some to be outrageous. -

It is therefore unnecessary to add more fantasies to the genuine historical facts in the field of Nazi occultism, especially when it comes to their weird expeditions and their pseudo-scientific researches. The true amateur of sensational and strange stories can still be fully satisfied with Himmler's Witch Project, or the Hollow Earth Theory, or the various moons of the World Ice Theory that fell on our planet and drowned the Atlanteans. This is real history and some high-ranking Nazis did believe in these theories, no matter how sensational they may sound to modern ears. It does not add anything to the uncanny spell of such stories to pollute them with material that cannot be verified or, even worse, with pure lies coming straight out of the imagination of poor authors in search of quick money and fame. -

Notes on Sources and Monster Historiography Those who searched for manlike monsters in the twentieth century— not as metaphors, but as flesh and blood organisms—have gone largely overlooked by academic historians of science. This field, as with cryp- tozoology in general, became the domain of independent amateur chroniclers producing a range of works of varying quality.1 An excel- lent explanation of what cryptozoology attempts to do is found in Chad Arment’s Cryptozoology: Science and Speculation.2 Since the 1960s, scholarly works on anomalous primates, and cryptids in gen- eral, look to place them in the realm of legend and myth: creations of the human mind rather than of evolution.3 These works tend to fall under what Jeffrey Cohen called “monster theory.”4 Works taking an empirical, physical anthropology approach include Gill, Meldrum, and Bindernagel.5 Recent writings have begun to address the lives of the monster hunters, but follow the tradition of focusing on the folkloric and pop culture nature of Bigfoot rather than on the natural history element, and not on the place of cryptozoology in the context of the history of science. This category tends to lean to the exposé or dismissive side.6 Of use to the discussion of monsters in general are scholarly works that attempt to put studies of human monsters into the history of biological systemization and classification.7 A number of methodological issues need to be addressed in the historiography of anomalous primate studies. There are papers col- lections of leading researchers. Grover Krantz, Bernard Heuvelmans, and Ivan Sanderson have accessible materials, as do Carleton Coon and George Agogino. -

1954 Retro Hugo Nominating and Voting Statistics Noreascon Four – The 62nd Worldcon Boston, Massachusetts USA The nominees that follow were chosen by popular vote by 131 members of Noreascon 4 and Torcon 3 who submitted valid nomination forms for work done in 1953. A total of 131 nomination forms (35 paper and 96 on-line forms) were received. As required by the WSFS Constitution, we report the top 15 vote-getters in each category. (In no category did anyone else get as many as 5% of the nominations cast in that category.) Except for a few items which are marked as ineligible, no attempt was made to validate the name title or eligibility of any item which would not affect the final nomination listing. When a nominee received nominations in more than one category, we combined nominations to the correct category where appropriate. To determine the viability of categories, potential nominees with four or fewer nominations were dropped from consideration; where this dropped a given category below three nominees, the category was dropped as non-viable.
