Biography by Richie Unterberger One of pop music's most well-known pure vocalists with an enduring reputation and a varied career that moved from swing to teen pop to folk. Read Full Biography Overview ↓ Biography ↓ Discography ↓ Songs ↓ Credits ↓ Awards ↓ Artist Biography by Richie Unterberger There's been considerable discussion about whether Bobby Darin should be classified as a rock & roll singer, a Vegas hipster cat, an interpreter of popular standards, or even a folk-rocker. He was all of these and none of these. Throughout his career he made a point of not becoming committed to any one style at the exclusion of others; at the height of his nightclub fame he incorporated a folk set into his act. When it appeared he could have gone on indefinitely as a sort of junior version of Frank Sinatra, he would periodically record pop/rock and folk-rock singles whose principal appeal lay outside of the adult pop market. At one point he started calling himself Bob Darin and recorded songs with vague anti- establishment overtones that could be said to be biting the largely bourgeois hands that fed his highest-paying gigs. It may be most accurate to say that Darin was, above all, a singer who wanted to do a lot of things, rather than make his mark as a particular stylist. That may have cost him some points as far as making it to the very top of certain genres, but it also makes his work more versatile than almost any other vocalist of his era. When Darin had his first hits in the late '50s, he was a teen idol of sorts, albeit a teen idol with much more talent and mature command than the typical singer in that style.

  • BUDDY HOLLY (Charles Hardin Holley) 7Th September 1936 - 3Rd February 1959 LYRICS Coordinated by Robin Dunn & Chrissie Van Varik
BUDDY HOLLY (Charles Hardin Holley) 7th September 1936 - 3rd February 1959 LYRICS Coordinated by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. Buddy Holly was born Charles Hardin Holley on 7th September 1936 in Lubbock, Texas. At a young age he learned to play guitar, fiddle and piano. He released only three albums during his short lifetime, before his untimely death in an airplane crash that fateful “day the music died”, 3rd February 1959. However, he had been a prolific writer and a couple of albums consisting of unreleased material and demo recordings were issued posthumously. Buddy Holly was one of the inaugural inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, together with The Everly Brothers. The songs are as performed in principal recordings (or demos) by Buddy Holly alone and/or with The Crickets plus those released by other artistes where Buddy was involved. Additionally included, for diehard collectors of all things Holly, are songs where lyrics refer to Buddy Holly or his songs. The bracketed date following the title denotes the year of the initial recording. Where it was difficult to detect precisely what is being sung, queries/gaps or alternative suggestions are included in blue and/or indicated by ??. Details of backing musicians are shown both for the pre and posthumous releases. Reference to The Picks 1980s/90s additional overdubs is omitted. Some very obscure titles have been discovered; information is wanted - dates and any recordings. NB: the notes are from various, sometimes contradictory, sources. In many instances Norman Petty (25th May 1927 - 15th August 1984) is included as a co-composing credit.

Being a young and the excellent ‘J.C. rocker, I was there primarily to see Carl Perkins The Man, His World, His but, by the end of the performance, I was in no Music’ doing the rounds doubt who the star of the show was. I was only at the cinemas, cameos familiar with a handful of Johnny’s songs so was in ’Columbo’ and ‘Little in the enviable position of hearing most of the House On The Prairie’ material for the first time. Songs of rivers, trains, (remember him singing prisons, love death and hard times in rural ‘Black Jack Davy’?); Arkansas, all driven along by the Tennessee we’d never seen or Three and this charismatic singing story teller in heard so much of the the black frock coat with a delivery that grabbed man in black. this listener and never let go. Fortunately, the Cash back catalogue was still easy to obtain in the late ‘60s. Any decent record shop might stock a dozen CBS albums and the Sun stuff was still available from Dan Coffey; quite a strain on an apprentice’s wages! I followed Johnny’s career ever since that first awakening.
