  • An Intelligent Technique to Customise Music Programmes for Their Audience
Poolcasting: an intelligent technique to customise music programmes for their audience Claudio Baccigalupo Tesi doctoral del progama de Doctorat en Informatica` Institut d’Investigacio¶ en Intel·ligencia` Artificial (IIIA-CSIC) Dirigit per Enric Plaza Departament de Ciencies` de la Computacio¶ Universitat Autonoma` de Barcelona Bellaterra, novembre de 2009 Abstract Poolcasting is an intelligent technique to customise musical se- quences for groups of listeners. Poolcasting acts like a disc jockey, determining and delivering songs that satisfy its audience. Satisfying an entire audience is not an easy task, especially when members of the group have heterogeneous preferences and can join and leave the group at different times. The approach of poolcasting consists in selecting songs iteratively, in real time, favouring those members who are less satisfied by the previous songs played. Poolcasting additionally ensures that the played sequence does not repeat the same songs or artists closely and that pairs of consecutive songs ‘flow’ well one after the other, in a musical sense. Good disc jockeys know from expertise which songs sound well in sequence; poolcasting obtains this knowledge from the analysis of playlists shared on the Web. The more two songs occur closely in playlists, the more poolcasting considers two songs as associated, in accordance with the human experiences expressed through playlists. Combining this knowl- edge and the music profiles of the listeners, poolcasting autonomously generates sequences that are varied, musically smooth and fairly adapted for a particular audience. A natural application for poolcasting is automating radio pro- grammes. Many online radios broadcast on each channel a random sequence of songs that is not affected by who is listening.

Abstract: This thesis returns love to the purview of Marxism and punk, which had attempted to ban the interpersonal in respective critiques of abstractions. Love-as-sense—as it is figured by Marx— will be distinguished from the love-of-love-songs, and from commodity fetishism and alienation, which relate to this recuperated love qua perception or experience. As its musical output exhibited residue of free love’s failure, and cited sixties pop which characterized love as mutual ownership, American and British punk from 1976-80 will be analyzed for its interrogation of commodified love. An introductory chapter will define love as an aesthetic activity and organize theoretical and musical sources according to the prominence of the body.

  • Production Notes
PRODUCTION NOTES With the clock ticking and less than a year until the world premiere of Frozen 2, the filmmakers, artists, songwriters and cast open their doors to cameras for a six-part documentary series to reveal the hard work, heart, and collaboration it takes to create one of the most highly-anticipated films in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ near-century of moviemaking. For the first time, cameras were there to capture an eye-opening - and at times jaw-dropping - view of the challenges and the breakthroughs, the artistry, creativity and the complexity of creating the #1 animated feature of all time. The series follows director/writer/chief creative officer Jennifer Lee, director Chris Buck, producer Peter Del Vecho, songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, actors Kristen Bell (“Anna”), Idina Menzel (“Elsa”), Josh Gad (“Olaf”), Jonathan Groff (“Kristoff”), Sterling K. Brown (“Lieutenant Mattias”), Evan Rachel Wood (“Iduna”) and the talented artists and technicians of Disney Animation as they race against time to finish the film, with both creative breakthroughs and frustrations along the way. The 6-episode docuseries, “Into the Unknown: Making Frozen 2,” is produced by Lincoln Square Productions and Walt Disney Animation Studios, is available worldwide exclusively on Disney+, June 26, 2020. In 2013, Walt Disney Animation Studios created Frozen, a feature that went on to become the #1 animated film of all time. Anna, Elsa, Olaf, Kristoff and Sven became household names. The soundtrack broke records. The song “Let It Go” became an international anthem. Frozen was a cultural phenomenon. When “Frozen” filmmakers Jennifer Lee (writer/director), Chris Buck (director) and Peter Del Vecho (producer) decided they had more story to tell for Elsa and Anna, they knew they needed to make Frozen 2.

AES Pacific NW Section Meeting Notice Around the Puget Sound, Seattle, Washington, U.S.A. AES PNW Meeting Notice By special arrangement with Palm Pictures A film documentary Tom Dowd and The Language of Music September 30, 2004, 7:30pm Shoreline Community College, Room 818 (music building) Every so often a commercial film arrives which shows the magic, art, and science behind what many of us love to do: audio for music. The most recent entry in this category enchanted a number of members of the Committee, and the PNW Section invites you to join us for a special showing of the video of the film: Tom Dowd & the Language Of Music. http://www.aes.org/sections/pnw/index-pf.htm (1 of 3) [10/1/2004 1:17:35 AM] AES Pacific NW Section Meeting Notice Tom Dowd was born in 1925 to musical parents. While pursuing a degree in Nuclear Physics at Columbia University, he ended up working for the US Army Corps of Engineers on what came to be known as the Manhattan Project, whose responsibility was the development of the first atomic bombs. After the war, security concerns and red tape created a no-win situation: finishing his degree was pointless. A summer job after the war led to a career in the music business. He cut his first record in 1947 at the age of 22. He remained active in the business until shortly before his death at age 77. Early on, Dowd met the Ertegun brothers, Ahmet and Nesuhi. The Ertegun brothers had a record label, Atlantic Records, and they had the good sense and timing to hire Dowd and Jerry Wexler.
