Performance & Service Parts Guide PERFORMANCE & SERVICE PARTS GUIDE Merkur XR4ti / Sierra XR4i / Sierra RS Cosworth / Sierra RS 500 / Merkur Scorpio BAT Inc. British American Transfer Inc. 7630 Matoaka Road Sarasota, FL 34243 phone (941) 355-0005 fax (941) 355-4683 www.batinc.net CATALOG 04/2003 EDITION 0 1 Introduction BAT is pleased to be able to offer this line of components for the U.S. specification "Merkur" XR4ti, Scorpio and the other European models of Sierra lineage. European Sierra models have been manufactured since 1982 and include two versions or body styles. We will concern ourselves with the Mark 1 as it is more similar to our U.S. version. The high water marks of the MK1 series are the XR4i and the Sierra Cosworth and R/S 500 models. From the exterior, XR4i is very similar to the U.S. Merkur XR4Ti in overall looks. However, under the hood it is powered by a 2.8L V-6 engine where we have the 2.3L 4 cylinder turbo. The other notable MK1 car the Cosworth Sierra is simply one of the more outrageous vehicles Ford has ever offered. The Cosworth starts life as a base Sierra three door body shell and adds a high performance engine, suspension, transmission, and aerodynamics, making it one of the fastest 4 passenger road cars in the world. Power comes from a 2.0L Cosworth Turbo YB series engine rated at 205 h.p. in its base form, and upwards of 550 h.p. in modified rally form. The R/S500 homologation outgrowth of the R/S Cosworth version is basically a de-tuned race car in street trim. Sierra MK2 versions received a sheet metal make over but share most of the mechanicals of the MK1. Interesting MK2 Sierra's include the Sierra Sapphire Cosworth, and Sierra XR 4x4 - an advanced 4 wheel drive 4 door sedan. What all this Sierra history means to us is an abundance of specialized performance parts, many of which bolt-on to our U.S. spec. Merkur. With this in mind Merkur owners can make an good vehicle even better. It is very amusing how much attention a Merkur that has been outfitted with Ford badges and Sierra logos and Cosworth grille commands, let alone a car equipped with the complete Cosworth body work! BAT is a recognized Ford Motorsport USA and Ford Motorsport/ Rallysport European dealer with over 30 years of experience of tuning European Ford automobiles. From Cortinas, Lotus Cars and Anglias during the 60's through the 70's with Pinto and Capri and into the 80's and 90's with Fiesta, Escort and Merkur. Our expertise with building and racing 4 cylinder Ford powered cars includes Formula Ford, Formula Continental & Atlantic, SCCA Production, Showroom Stock, Auto-X, Improved Touring and Circle Track racing classes. We have a highly capable staff and you can confidently allow them to handle even your most difficult technical needs. Better still, our ability to buy in quantity, import products directly, and manufacturer speciality components assures you are getting the right parts at the right price. Peter Thompson Eric Odenweller and the staff at BAT Inc. P.S. We have recently added a considerable number of parts for the Merkur Scorpio. Most of the XR4 items will have a Scorpio alternate available. See the price list for more information. M400A * supplied with adjustable high performance gas shocks pA Suspension Packs pB Sport Spring Sets -XR4 Our specially designed progressive rate sport springs will minimize body "roll" while cornering and reduce "dive" under hard braking. Progressive springs are designed to become stiffer as they are compressed allowing for a smooth transition between (very reasonable) straight line comfort and high performance cornering. We recommend the standard height or -25mm ride height sets for all around performance street and light competition use, the -40mm springs should be considered for only racing/ competition use. Take into account when lowering your cars ride height that additional negative camber will be added to the front and rear suspension angles. This is usually not a problem on the front end, however, cars that are already experiencing noticeable wear on the inside edges of the rear tires at "standard" ride height will see this increase when lowering. This condition can be corrected if necessary by using camber shims (kit available below) at the rear spindle mount to adjust for excessive negative camber. Notes: Defining "standard" ride height is difficult on the XR4 as the springs on many pB Sport Spring Sets cars have already "sagged" 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch since new. In this case if the front and rear tires are still wearing normally lowering the car another 1/4" or 1/2" (over what it is currently) should not adversely effect tire wear.

  • LABOUR and TECHNOLOGY in the CAR INDUSTRY. Ford Strategies in Britain and Brazil
LABOUR AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE CAR INDUSTRY. Ford strategies in Britain and Brazil Elizabeth Bortolaia Silva Thesis submitted for the Degree of PhD, Imperial College of Science and Technology University of London May 1988 LABOUR AND TECHNOLOGY IN THE CAR INDUSTRY Ford strategies in Britain and Brazil ABSTRACT This thesis looks at aspects of recent changes in international competition in the car industry. It examines the implications of the changes for the relationship between technology and work and it considers how strategies of multinational corporations interact with different national contexts. It is based on a case-study of the Ford Motor Company in its two largest factories in Britain and Brazil, Dagenham and São Bernardo. Chapter 1 describes existing theoretical approaches to comparative studies of technology and work, criticizes technological and cultural determinist approaches and argues for a method that draws on a 'historical regulation' approach. Chapters 2, 3 and 4 describe the long-term background and recent shifts in the pattern of international competition in the motor industry. In particular they look at important shifts in the late 1970s and 1980s and at Ford's changes in management structure and product strategy designed to meet these challenges. Chapter 5 considers recent debates on international productivity comparisons and presents a fieldwork-based comparison of the production process at Dagenham and São Bernardo. The description shows the importance of issues other than technology in determining the flexibility and quality of production. In different national contexts, 2 different mixes of technology and labour can produce comparable results. Chapters 6, 7 and 8 look at the national and local contexts of industrial relations in the two countries to throw light on the different patterns of change observed in the factories.

  • Birth of the XR
The birth of a new car Merkur Club of America In September 1982, Ford unveiled the Ford Sierra at the Frankfurt Motor show. The Sierra was the long awaited replacement for the highly successful Cortina, which had been in production for over 20 years. Over 4.2 million Cortinas were built during its 20 year life span and it was the Mk 3 Cortina, which was launched in 1970, that was the first Euro Ford to use the 4cylinder Pinto engine. Work on a replacement for the Cortina started in the late 1970s under the code name Project Toni. The car was designed to be a midsize, versatile model to fill the slot between the Escort and the Granada. The energy crisis of 197879 influenced greatly the design of the car and extreme care was taken with breaking the sharp lines of the Cortina and in the aerodynamics. The resulting bodyform resulted in a Cd of .34 verses .45 for its predecessor, the Cortina. In fact the Sierra diverged from the successful Cortina in a number of ways the hatchback, the Independent Rear Suspension, MacPherson struts; all these were a breakaway from tradition. The Sierra was to be a 1980s car whereas the Cortina was a 1960s car. This was a great risk for Ford and public opinion was widely varied. " odds are that any two people picked randomly off the street would disagree about the styling" Car & Driver In 1981, a full year before the Sierra was unveiled and while the Cortina was still in production, Ford exhibited to the automotive press their Probe III concept vehicle.

  • "The Merkur Xr4ti, Lincolnmercurys Antidote for the BMW Syndrome" Motor Trend 1984
Merkur Club of America From the Sierra projects inception, there were plans to introduce a variant to North America. This was nothing new to Ford, which had successfully imported tens of thousands of Capris and Fiestas to the North American market. Ford invested $50M in Federalizing the Sierra to meet the safety and emissions requirements of the North American marketplace. This necessitated a very different car to its European cousins and over 500 new unique parts were made. As a result of these differences, it was decided to entrust the manufacture of the car to the Karmann coachworks in Osnabruck, Germany. Karmann was supplied with the bodywork from Fords Genk plant and completed the entire car in Germany for shipment out of Rotterdam into the North American ports of Houston, Baltimore, Portland and Los Angeles.
