Student Affairs Weekly Report September 3, 2014 ARKANSAS UNION: • Union traffic count 94,255 • The Union hosted 276 events CAMPUS CARD OFFICE: • Created 620 faculty, staff and student ID Cards and processed $33,720 in Razorbuck$ deposits and resolved 4 major register issues CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTER: • Career Fest | Wednesday, September 10 - Wednesday, October 15 | Various Times | Various Locations The University Career Development Center presents Career Fest, a semester of professional development events for all UA students. The event is designed to prepare and equip UA students with the skills and knowledge necessary for career success. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions and learn from knowledgeable employers and staff. The semester will include two keynote presentations, Diversity in the Workplace workshop, Fulbright Series, and E2 Series (Engineers Employed). GREEK LIFE: • This summer, the Greek Life office welcomed new staff members. Please join us in welcoming the following: Ms. Megan Francis, Assistant Director of Greek Life (IFC, Greek Life Facilitators, and New Greek Council), Ms. Ashley Bloxom, Assistant Director of Greek Life (Panhellenic, National-Panhellenic Council, and United Greek Council), Graduate Assistants for 2014-15: Tyler McLain, Carissa Kelly, and Taylor Fisher. • The National Pan-Hellenic Council will host its annual back to school step show on Thursday, September 4 at 7pm in the Union Ballroom. The group will be collecting can goods to benefit Life Source and UA Food Pantry. • The Interfraternity Council will be hosting men’s recruitment starting Friday, September 5 with an orientation program beginning promptly at 5pm. Recruitment parties will be held September 7 and 12- 13. Bid Day will be September 14 on Old Main Lawn at Noon. Currently, we have 901 students registered. • Greeks “Keeping It Real” will be held on Monday, September 29 at 6pm and 8pm in the Union Ballroom. This is a risk management program designed specifically for our new members to help them make healthy and responsible decisions. PAT WALKER HEALTH CENTER (PWHC): • ROAR (Razorbacks Offering Accountability Resources) is hosting an alcohol-free tailgate in Victory Village North for each home game. They will be offering free food, soda, water and games. They will give away an Arkansas Bag at each tailgate. • RESPECT (Rape Education Services by Peers Encouraging Conscious Thought) has kicked off their “That’s so 6 percent” campaign. Interested parties can attend a short information session to learn more about “That’s so 6 percent” and receive a t-shirt to wear throughout the semester on Wednesdays to raise awareness about rape culture. To learn more, visit http://respect.uark.edu/thats-so-6 or contact Mary Wyandt-Hiebert. • WELLGroup is a new free group for the campus community (students, faculty and staff) offered through Wellness and Health Promotion. The group will meet weekly on Thursdays from 2:30-3:30 p.m. in PWHC room 283. Topics will include creating your own well-life vision, becoming more resilient, developing effective coping skills, holistic health and wellness. The ongoing threads of WELLGroup are yoga and mindfulness. • Yoga is back for the semester! Join us in PWHC room 283 at noon on Fridays for yoga. • We have administered nearly 400 Tuberculosis screenings in the month of August. • The medical clinic has extended hours throughout the week to better serve the campus community. We are open 8 a.m.-7 p.m. on Tuesday-Thursday. • RazorCARE is open for students to receive quick diagnosis and treatment of minor injuries. No appointment is needed, so students can walk in and be seen the same day. STUDENT ACTIVITIES: Associated Student Government (ASG • Fresh HOGS, Senate, and Graduate Student Congress had high applicants. Senate and GSC will have competitive races for elections next week, and Fresh HOGS will have a large applicant pool for the 20 spots in its Fall Cohort. • Senate will be holding their first meeting next Tuesday night at 6pm in the Graduate Education Auditorium. • Applications for the 2014 Homecoming Queen’s Court and the Male Court open on Monday, Sept. 8 at asg.uark.edu. More information on the policies and procedures can be found at asg.uark.edu. Distinguished Lecture Committee (DLC): • Preparing for Bill Nye - Friday, September 19 at 7:00pm Registered Student Organizations (RSO): • As of 8/28, we have 206 active and 60 that are in-process (i.e. they have started the registration process, but have not yet completed it). RSOs have until September 15 to re-register. • The first Advisor Development Workshop will be on Wednesday, September 16 at 12 p.m. in ARKU 308. At this workshop, Advisors will get a review of basic RSO policies and expectations of an RSO advisor. It was a huge success. • UP Day, Union Mall, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. on 9/3 This will be an opportunity for students to learn about our upcoming events and join one of our eight committees: Outdoor Movie: X-Men Days of Future Past, Old Main Lawn, 9p this event is being co-sponsored with Associated Student Government STUDENT STANDARDS & CONDUCT: • For dates 8/27 to 9/03: 73 new conduct cases were opened including: 23 use/possession of alcohol, 4 public intoxication; 2 disorderly conduct; 5 possession/use of controlled substance; 1 furnishing false/misleading information (These numbers may include several violations for one individual). STUDENT MEDIA: • UATV renovation is proceeding according to schedule. The Field Shop, our vendor, reports that the installation should be complete on or about Sept. 19. The studio and been painted and the carpeting installed. • The Arkansas Traveler has successfully published its first three issues of the year. • Our yearbook printers, Multi Media Technology, will conduct a web training session with the Razorback staff in late Sept. and a site visit and training visit in late October. These sessions are very helpful to ensure that all proceeds smoothly during the pre-press phase of publication. • KXUA has redesigned it web site. The new site is a great improvement over the previous incarnation. Take a look at KXUA On the Web. • Submit a Public Service Announcement on KXUA: A Public Service Announcement is KXUA’s way to promote events and activities of the UA’s registered student organizations, UA departments, and local nonprofits at no cost. These public service announcements will be read live over the airwaves by KXUA announcers. Please keep announcements concise and accurate for their on-air broadcast. Submissions can be made at SUBMIT A PSA • The Razorback yearbook has redesigned it web site. The updated site provides numerous avenues for students to get involved with the yearbook. Students may reserve their 2015 Razorback by visiting Order. Students may now opt to have their yearbook mailed directly to their home. • Steve Wilkes will present a session at the national Associated Collegiate Press and College Media Advisers conference, Oct. 29-Nov. 2, 2014, at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. UNIVERSITY HOUSING: • The SWACURH 2014 Conference Planning team had their first meeting of the semester on Saturday, August 23. SWACURH 2014 will be held November 6 – 9 here in Fayetteville. • Residence Education and the Fulbright Advising Center are collaborating on a Life Raft Debate program that will occur on Tuesday, October 28. The program’s purpose is to help first-year students discover the practical, “real world” relevance of disciplines constituting the core curriculum. The program also seeks to enhance students’ appreciation of the liberal arts and to inspire them to reflect on the value and utility of their chosen subjects of study. UNIVERSITY DINING: • We are promoting our very own App on Campus this week. The app features menus, nutritional information, hours of operation and is a GPS locator.
