Pop art, the movement Warhol is typically associated with, !ourished in the 60s. It was also during that decade that Warhol’s career peaked. From 1964 till 1968 his studio, known as the Silver Factory, became not just a hothouse of artistic activity, but also the embodiment of the zeitgeist: the “sex, drugs and rock’n’roll” culture of the period with its penchant for experimentation and excess, the revolution in morals and sexuality (Korichi 182–183, 206–208). "e seventh decade of the twentieth century was also the time when Warhol opened an important chapter in his painterly career. In the early sixties, he started executing celebrity portraits. In total, Warhol produced hundreds of paintings depicting stars and famous personalities. His most famous works are Campbell's Soup Cans, Moonwalk, Marilyn Monroe, Che, and Eight Elvises. • He studied art at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh. • He worked with different forms of media such as: painting, printmaking, photography, drawing, sculpture, film and music. • On one of his first jobs his name was misspelled as "Warhol“ and he liked it. • He explored pop culture with brands like Coca Cola, Campbells’ and Watties' soup. In 1961, he began to mass-produce commercial goods with his art. He called it Pop Art. One example was the Campbell's Soup cans. He painted Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, Elizabeth Taylor, and Mao Zedong. Press Release Andreas Gursky September 12–November 14, 2020 Sprüth Magers, Berlin Monika Sprüth and Philomene Magers are pleased to present a substantial exhibition of new photographs by Andreas Gursky, his first new body of work in almost three years, in which he takes up a range of themes that he has investigated for decades. Despite the continuity in theme and subject matter—our built environment, humankind’s impact on the natural world—the new pictures embed his analyses in current events, offering altered settings and situations to explore. Rhine III (2018) revisits his important work Rhine II (1999)—the dimensions, setting and composition of both are all almost identical. And yet, just twenty years later, the mood is drastically altered. The drought of summer 2018 reduced the river to a record low, and the new picture offers a dystopian vision of the once flourishing river landscape. Cruise (2020) also brings to mind an important earlier work, Paris, Montparnasse (1993). The same grid-like structure appears, but instead of a large apartment building, here there are hundreds of windows on the side of an enormous cruise ship. As with the Paris picture, Cruise shows a human environment atomized into a modernist architectural grid. Politik II (2020) directly follows Gursky's work Rückblick (2015), also included in the exhibition, to create a new series that looks at political structures. Over a period of several months, Gursky closely observed the activities of the members of parliament in the German Bundestag. Politik II features thirteen politicians in animated conversations, the figures filling the entire width of the picture. -

Expos 20: The Rise of Pop Fall 2014 Barker 133, MW 10:00 & 11:00 Kevin Birmingham (birmingh@fas) Expos Office: 1 Bow Street #223 Office Hours: Mondays 12:15-2 The idea that there is a hierarchy of art forms – that some styles, genres and media are superior to others – extends at least as far back as Aristotle. Aesthetic categories have always been difficult to maintain, but they have been particularly fluid during the past fifty years in the United States. What does it mean to undercut the prestige of high art with popular culture? What happens to art and society when the boundaries separating high and low art are gone – when Proust and Porky Pig rub shoulders and the museum resembles the supermarket? This course examines fiction, painting and film during a roughly ten-year period (1964-1975) in which reigning cultural hierarchies disintegrated and older terms like “high culture” and “mass culture” began to lose their meaning. In the first unit, we will approach the death of the high art novel in Thomas Pynchon’s The Crying of Lot 49, which disrupts notions of literature through a superficial suburban American landscape and through the form of the novel itself. The second unit turns to Andy Warhol and Pop Art, which critics consider either an American avant-garde movement undermining high art or an unabashed celebration of vacuous consumer culture. In the third unit, we will turn our attention to The Rocky Horror Picture Show and the rise of cult films in the 1970s. Throughout the semester, we will engage art criticism, philosophy and sociology to help us make sense of important concepts that bear upon the status of art in modern society: tradition, craftsmanship, community, allusion, protest, authority and aura. -

Privileged Intake Of all the creatures who populate and punctuate Warhol’s worlds—drag queens, hustlers, movie stars, First Wives—the drug user and abuser retains a particular access to glamour. Existing along a continuum ranging from the occasional substance dilettante to the hard-core, raging junkie, the consumer of drugs preoccupies Warhol throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s. Their actions and habits fascinate him, his screens become the sacred place where their rituals are projected and packaged.
