The screening will be held at Conserver House, 180 St. John St., Fredericton, on Friday, January 11th at 7PM. The Suffering Grasses seeks to explore the war in Syria through the humanity of the civilians who have been killed, abused, and displaced to the squalor of refugee camps. In all wars, it is civilians—women and children, families and whole communities—who suffer at the hands of those in power. While focusing on the plight of those caught in the crossfire of the hegemons, the film seeks to unravel the conflict by exploring the motivations of its actors--the Ba’athist regime of Bashar al-Assad, the Free Syrian Army and other geopolitical players like the United States, Israel, Russia, China, Iran, Lebanon, Turkey, the Gulf countries... When elephants go to war, it is the grass that suffers. This is a film about the elephants, but made for the grasses. All Cinema Politica documentaries are followed by a discussion about the film for those who wish to stay. Films are free to the public but donations are encouraged to cover expenses. Our Winter 2013 is now available. Check out our fascinating list of films for something to catch your eye and rouse your mind from its hibernation at http://www.cinemapolitica.org/fredericton. A significant part of the thesis is devoted to an investigation of conditions connected to the relation of Canadian music and Canadian sense of identity and uniqueness. Further, an account of Canadian radio broadcasting and induction of regulating acts which influenced music production in Canada in the second half of the twentieth century are given. Moreover, the effectiveness and contributions of these regulating acts are summarized and evaluated. Last but not least, the main characteristics of the music style of a female singer songwriter Joni Mitchell are examined.

  • Exclusive Album Premiere: Zeus, 'Busting Visions'
PRESS KIT 2012 Exclusive Album Premiere: Zeus, ‘Busting Visions’ Toronto band returns with second album Toronto’s Zeus play a rootsy, melodic brand of rock that earned the band consideration for Canada’s Polaris Music Prize upon the release of their 2010 debut, Say Us. They’ve been issuing a steady stream of singles leading up to the release of their second album, Busting Visions, which comes out March 27th. In the meantime, you can stream the full release exclusively here. ZEUS PRESS KIT ROLLING STONE MARCH 2012 Could Toronto’s Zeus be the next great Canadian band? BEN CAPLAN At a sound check at Toronto’s Horseshoe Tavern, with beers on their amplifiers, Zeus rips through their new album, Busting Visions. They switch instruments, obsess over sound levels and noodle inces- santly across the past six decades of popular tunes. Zeus have been touted by Broken Social Scene’s Jason Collett as the next great Ca- nadian rock band and now they’re headlining Friday night’s marquee event at the end of Canadian Music Week. For the four musi- cians from small town Ontario, the group may finally be arriving at a sound they’ve been working toward since they were kids. “I woke up the other day and something felt different. I can feel it, potential, and it makes for some nervous energy,” says Neil Quin, 26, one of three members of Zeus who writes songs, plays bass and guitar and also sings. “We’ve definitely put in our time and rose up through the ranks,” adds Mike O’Brien, 31, who fell in with his bandmates when Afie Jurvanen, who records as Bahamas, left their group to play stadiums with Feist.

  • A Conversation with Sarah Harmer by Frank Goodman (4/2006, Puremusic.Com)
A Conversation with Sarah Harmer by Frank Goodman (4/2006, Puremusic.com) We're very happy to bring you an interview with Sarah Harmer this month. She's an artist I've been enjoying and actually pursuing for some time. While she's not exactly a household name yet in the States, she enjoys a wide popularity in her native Canada. There she won a Juno in 2005, in the Best Adult Alternative CD category, for her superb work All Of Our Names. She first came to light nationally with a group that sometimes included her sister Mary on bass, called Weeping Tile. Sarah grew up on a farm on what's called the Niagara Escarpment in Southern Ontario, which has everything to do with this record. Although it is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, the escarpment is lethally threatened by the interests of the aggregate industry (sand, gravel, and shale). Sarah and her cohorts set off in June of 2005 on an "I Love The Escarpment" Tour. They hiked, climbed, and caved their way through the land, and played all the communities along the way. The group donated all the proceeds from the shows to a volunteer research and advocacy organization that the artist helped to form, PERL, Protecting Escarpment Rural Land. At the end of that tour, they went into the studio and recorded I'm a Mountain. Solo and with Weeping Tile (for which she was the principal writer and lead vocalist), Sarah's music has included folk and jazz, country, alternative rock and pop. The JUNO record, All of Our Names, was a masterful folk pop record that rang with greatness from first exposure.

  • Artist: Jim Lauderdale Album: Country Super Hits Vol 1 Label: Yep Roc
