I would like to present the Association's Annual Report to all members of the Moore Park South East Cricket Association. The 2012/2013 Season saw total team numbers in our main competition drop slightly once again continuing a trend recent seasons. The grade most affected by this drop in numbers appears to be in 1 st grade where we are struggling to find enough competitive teams to fill the grade. The season saw us go with a combined 1 st and 2'1 grade competition with limited success. Throughout the off- season I have been in talks with nearby associations suffering similar problems as us especially in regard to their 1 st grade competitions with the notion of playing a combined l st grade competition with one or two of these associations. It may not happen this coming season but it may happen in the very near future. In 2012/2013 we had a total of 25 teams in the main competition compete over five grades with the Premiership winners being 1 st Grade — Souths Juniors; 2 nd Grade — Clovelly CC; 3 Grade — Edna Puffett Memorial XI; 4 th Grade — Clovelly CC and 5 th Grade — Doncaster. The Club Championship was taken out by Clovelly CC for the second season in a row. In the Twenty20 competition we had a total of 9 teams compete in a fairly even competition with Souths Juniors 1 once again coming out as deserved premiers. In a competition again affected by rain our Martin Shield team qualified for the quarter-finals against Camden but unfortunately the rain intervened during the course of the afternoon resulting in a drawn match, which saw Camden progress to the semi-finals. My thanks to our Patron Mr Harry Solomons and Kingsgrove Sports Centre, the South Sydney Junior Rugby League Football Club, Kookaburra and the Doncaster Hotel for their ongoing support and sponsorship of the Association. Finally I would like to thank all fellow Board Members, club delegates, umpires, scorers, volunteers and players who make up the competition and make it a success.

Yours in cricket

David Power Secretary

8 President's Report

Ladies and Gentlemen:

The 2012-2013 season marked the completion of 18 seasons since Moore Park, South Sydney and the Catholic Association joined to form the Moore Park South East Cricket Association. Season 2012-13 saw a further drop in teams in the Association despite an aggressive advertising and promotional campaign to draw teams to the Association. This is a major concern as for the past two years numbers have fallen. The Association is fully aware of the many issues relating to this including, demographics lack of affordable grounds that result in high consumer fees and the lack of juniors playing park cricket once they leave the junior ranks. The season finished in stark contrast to the previous season with all Minor Premiers in all grades winning their respective Grade Premiership. I congratulate all of those Premiership Clubs on their success in particular Souths Juniors who triumphed in first grade and at the same time notched up 24 consecutive grand final appearances. This is truly a remarkable feat and shows what a solid group of players they are with several of their current side featuring in many of those grand finals. This mighty club also took out the 20/20 competition for the third season in a row. My congratulations also to the Clovelly club who not only won the 2 ' and 4th grade premiership but were Club Champions for the second year in a row. Also Edna Puffett who recorded their first Premiership success and not to forget Doncaster who were consistent throughout the year in claiming the 5th grade trophy. Congratulations also to the many individuals whose achievements are recorded further in this report. The season did not enjoy the same success on the representative front as was the case in previous years. The Associations Martin Shield side recorded 2 wins out of 3 in standard competition however in the quarter finals the weather intervened and unfortunately our opposition who were higher on the ladder went through to the finals series. My thanks to our Captain and organizer Hippo who put in a tremendous effort in getting the side together and all but pulling off a place in the semi-finals. A big thanks also to selectors Greg Leslie, Bill Glacken, who also was scorer and Dave Power. The Associations only other representative game was against Northern Suburbs who defeated us in a close encounter. Also on the representative front I am pleased to announce negotiations were completed with Southern Highlands and it is anticipated that a regular fixture will take place in the Bowral area commencing in season 2013-2014. For an association to be successful, it needs support. I would like to thank a number of people for their support in season 2012-2013-: Noel Moig Agencies for the KOOKABURRA Sponsorship: We are in the final year of a three year agreement with Kookaburra. This sponsorship is used directly to assist in the ever increasing ground fees set by the landlords of our grounds. I am pleased to report this year saw only minor fee increase due directly to the monies from this sponsorship. My thanks to both Noel Moig and Cameron Eves of Noel Moig Agencies and the team at Kookaburra for their ongoing support. Mr. Harry Solomons, Managing Director Kingsgrove Sports: Harry is not only our Patron but a longtime supporter of park cricket in the South Sydney area having not only played many games in the former South Sydney Cricket Association but also represented that Association. Harry has a true understanding of Association cricket and what it takes to be a successful association and our success is helped by his support both at club and Association level. I thank Harry and the team at Kingsgrove Sports for their support and I urge all clubs to visit Kingsgrove Sports for all your teams and individual cricket requirements.

9 South Sydney Juniors Leagues Club: Not only do we get a great deal for our presentation evening but the club also financially contributes to ground costs each year. To the Board of Souths Juniors my thanks for your continued support and the Association look forward to continuing our relationship for many years to come. Centennial Park Trust, Botany Council, Randwick Council: Our thanks to these organisations and there staff who ensure our grounds are maintained each week. Doncaster Hotel: The Doncaster Hotel is now in its fourth year as a sponsor of our representative sides. My thanks to Michael Paterson and the team at the Doncaster Hotel for their continued support. I would urge all members to try the bistro at the Donny the food is fabulous and don't forget to try your hand at trivia on trivia night and of course TEXAS polka thanks again to the DONNY. Umpires: My thanks to the umpires who each Saturday control our fixtures. Our numbers have fallen in the past few seasons; however John Chalmers is as always busy recruiting from other Associations. My thanks to John for his persistence in ensuring we have the necessary umpires each week. I would also encourage any person who wishes to be an umpire to contact John. Thanks again to our umpires. MPSECA Board: The Board this year welcomes new members Matt Donovan, Dale Evans and Jiggy Kakkad who all made solid contributions in the running of the Association throughout the season. A special mention of congratulations to our Assistant Secretary John Chalmers who was awarded a 50 year service to cricket award by the ACB and Cricket NSW, this award was also acknowledged in State Parliament by the Member for Heffron Ron Hoenig MP, congratulations John well done.... A big thank you to Matt Donovan who took on the Treasurers role and Vice President Dave Power who not only wears the Vice Presidents hat but contributes as Secretary and runs the 20/20 competition which is now in its seventh season. Thank you to all Board members who as volunteers are the ones responsible for your Saturday cricket happening each week. MPSECA Affiliated Clubs and Players: My sincere thanks for the support given by clubs and particularly the office bearers of our clubs whom I am aware spend many voluntary hours organizing their club each week. To all players and club supporters whom without you we do not have an Association, my thanks for your continued support of this great Association. Season 2012-2013 has concluded and as I reported earlier our numbers were down on previous seasons. It is the intention of the current Board to look at options in relation to strengthening our competition particularly 1 s' grade. It is my belief and the Boards that we must have a strong healthy first grade to encourage teams to join the lower grades and aspire to playing in the top grade, to that end we will be looking at a number of suggestions that will benefit our competition and help us to maintain a strong premier grade. It is also my belief that we need to encourage juniors to play in our competition and to that end the Board is looking at options with local junior organisations within the metropolitan area. In conclusion once again I ask members to consider volunteering to become a Board member in season 2013-2014. We are always looking for additional members particularly if you have been involved in sports administration as I am sure there must be members who can help us increase numbers and assure the future of the Association. I look forward to seeing you all on the park in 2013-2014 again my thanks for your continued support, I commend this report to the members. Paul Brien President

1 1 Representative Season Report

Firstly I want to thank the MPSECA board and all the players involved for giving me another chance at managing the Martin Shield and 2nd Tier Representative teams. Again this year saw a number of experienced players leave our team, however we also had a few players return from two years before.

I want to congratulate all our representative players for their involvement and for their professional approach and sportsmanship.

We had a very successful Martin Shield 2012/13 season with making the Quarter Finals again. The only negative about this season was that the bad weather had a major effect on the result of our Quarter Final. Year after year we prove that we have very talented cricketers playing in our association by these great results in the Martin Shield Competition. I am very proud of the results our representative teams have accomplished.

Game 1: vs. Manly at Nolan Reserve Manly

MPSECA 108 lost to Manly 291

We started well getting two quick wickets, however 2 dropped catches saw us pay dearly, those 2 batsmen went on to hit into the 90's giving Manly a commanding total of 291 runs.

This left us with a huge challenge, but we were up for it and confident.

We started well, but lost 4 very quick wickets that put the pressure on the rest of the batsmen and that made it difficult to get into a comfortable spot where we could clearly concentrate on giving the run chase a chance and we all collapsed for a dismal 108.

As all cricketers know "CATCHES WIN MATCHES" and it was never more true than this day. We would have had a different game if we kept those catches.

Game 2: vs. Inner West Harbour at Marrickville Oval Marrickville

MPSECA 8/181 defeated Inner West Harbour 180

We started well getting 6 Inner West Harbour wickets for 90 runs, then the next 2 batsmen went on to hit on and get Inner West Harbour a reasonable score of 180 in 55 overs.

This left us with a reasonable challenge, and we were up for it and felt confident.

We started well, but lost a very quick wicket before the next 5 batsmen scored 30 odd each with some luck and got the 181 needed in 25 overs and with 2 wickets in hand.

12 Game 3: vs. St George/Georges River at Cahill Park Arneliffe

MPSECA 2/220 defeated Georges River/St George 219

We started well getting 1 St George/Georges River wicket for 0 runs, then the next 2 batsmen went on to hit on to half centuries each and get St George/Georges River to a reasonable score before we struck over and over again to eventually get them all out for 219 in 55 overs, mention to Bill Saracoglu 7 wickets.

This left us with a reasonable challenge, and we were up for it and felt confident.

We started well, but lost a quick wicket for 50 then again at 60 before the next 2 batsmen scored 103no Ash Azhar and 58no Michael Manna and went on to get the total required with only 2 wickets falling.

This win qualifies us for the quarter finals and we face Camden.

Game 4: Quarter Final vs. Camden at Memorial Oval Ingleburn

WASHED OUT - MPSECA 122 drew with Camden 3/16

We batted first and had a great start with 1 wicket falling at 30, but then we had a collapse which saw us at 7 wickets down for 56 when our 8 and 9 dug in and got us to 122.

During lunch we had a shower so we rushed the covers onto the pitch. After the rain we went out and bowled 6 great overs which saw Camden lose 3 wickets for 16 runs. We had them on the ropes until the rain came down again and stayed for the rest of the afternoon. The game finished in a draw which means that Camden goes through to the Semi Finals because they ended higher on the ladder during preliminary rounds. We were gutted because we and Camden knew that we were on top of the game.

If I've missed anything or anyone I apologise.

Again, I thank all of the MPSECA board, all the players involved, all the umpires and a special mention to Billy Glacken for helping me and scoring all games. I also want to make a special mention for the Doncaster Hotel for their continuing support and sponsorship of our cricket association and our representative teams.

As of this year due to personal and family reasons, it gives me great sadness I will be stepping down from managing and playing in any representative team so this will be my final representative report for a while.

Best wishes and good luck for the 2013/14 season.

Regards Hippo

14 MPSECA 1 st Grade Report

Souths Juniors Proving they are well and truly the benchmark off this comp, Souths cruised through the season and took the premiership in what was their 24 th grand final appearance in a row. The batting double was taken out by the ultra-consistent Justin Smith with 435 @ 65.14, and was supported by James Hourn 312 @ 26 and Peter Lazaropoulos 199 @ 25. But as usual it was their bowling attack that led the way with a seeming less endless supply of guys who can swing it around and keep it very tight. Glen Standing shows no sign of a decline in dominance with 29 wickets @ 11, Justin Smith showed his all-round value with 19 @ 13, while Matthew Devlin and Greg Scott both supported well with 15 each. Late season acquisition Michael Dunlea is one to watch out for in the future, his debut featured 6/12 and a hat trick! Will be hard to beat again next year.

Clovelly Despite losing some key players from last season, Clovelly remained strong with the addition of several Ferns players. They took a while to gel but when they did they showed they were still a classy team, making it all the way through to the GF before running into Souths. Michael Manna 424 @ 35, and Robert Raffaele 326 @ 27 were very consistent, while Billy Saracoglu was a revelation after promoting himself to the opening position and finished with 258 @ 26. Grant McMillan spearheaded the attack with 34 @ 9.7, while Billy Saracoglu and Dan Stavely both chipped in with an economical 19 wickets apiece. They'll be looking to get their big guns on the field more often next season, and if they do they are a big chance to add to their recent success.

Botany United Last year's 2nd grade premiers returned to the top grade for the first time since 2008/09 and were certainly of place. Front runners for the early part of the season, they managed to qualify for the semis before bowing out. They welcomed the return of former local boy Hippo Giitsidis who topped the aggregates with 465 runs @ 39. Young gun Nathan Power had no problems stepping up to the top grade with 284 @ 22, while Bhusan Rele played some classy innings to end with 255 @ 26. While lacking the strike power of some of the other teams, the bowling attack proved to be effective with David Park leading the way with his 20 wickets @ 19. Vitali Bhavsar (18), Dave Power (17) and Hippo (17) assisted ably.

Cooue Bay Rebels The rebels narrowly missed the semis but proved they were a danger to any team on their day including a win over the eventual premiers. Adam Damary proved to be the consistent batsman they have long been seeking with 286 @ 41, but lacked support with Matt Donovan 209 @ 21 the only other to top the 200 mark. Bowling depth was lacking after losing their 2 strike bowlers from the previous season, but Andrew Bell stepped into the breach with 25 scalps @ 14.40 but no one else was able to top the 15 wicket mark. Need to get some squad consistency in order to challenge for higher honours next year.

Clovelly A last minute merger between Clovelly and Beach Palace allowed the combined squad the consistent numbers they had been seeking and it certainly paid dividends. They brushed aside the opposition including several 1 st grade teams and easily won the minor premier/premier double. Rino Tomasiello was the star of the show managing a unique quadruple of the association batting and bowling averages and aggregates. This very impressive haul included 286 runs @ 36, and 36 wickets @ 13. Sanjay Prasad proved reliable as ever with 270 @ 30 while Tim Scullard was also strong with 267 @ 30, and also played a crucial knock in the GF. Tim and Sean Barclay also chipped in with 19 wickets apiece. Should make for an interesting rivalry with two Clovelly teams in grade next year.

Kingsford Apaches This team was very well led by Dave Waterson and never gave in all season which culminated in being outclassed by Clovelly in the GF. What they lacked in star power they made up by being a cohesive unit and while wins were few and far between they were competitive in most games. Runs were the main struggle, and this is reflected in Harley Bateup being the leading scorer with 117. Bryan Seymour was unfortunately hampered by injuries at stages, but his 19 wickets @ 21 still showed he can be a handful. In addition to this he took 7 wickets including a hat-trick in the semi. The support cast was numerous including many players who stepped up from the lower grades to fill gaps who have hopefully gained some valuable experience in the future.

Men of the Eat It was a difficult season for this team who have admirably risen their way up the grades throughout the season. Unfortunately the loss of some key players coupled with having to compete with first grade teams in the combined grades proved to be too difficult. To the teams credit they never gave in and appeared to enjoy their time on the field. They unearthed a new talent in Damon Sharwood who managed 209 runs @ 42, while Jamie Motum helped out with 198 @ 15. The bowling attack struggled to stem the flow of runs at times, but the skipper Michael Juda was effective in snaring 22 wickets, backed up by Motum with 17. Special mention to a potential star of the future in Zac Kertesz who managed 6 wickets of 1 st graders with his leg spin despite still playing in the under 14's. Good effort guys, hope to see you next year.

Clovelly 2" Grade Premiers 2012/2013 MPSECA 3rd Grade Report

Edna Puffett Memorial XI 4 years after joining MPSECA, the Puffers have finally tasted success in winning the 3 1d grade minor premier/premier double. While the same old faces performed to their usual high standard, it was the addition of some new blood that enabled them to be a much more consistent group. Mathew Greenwood topped the batting charts with 315 runs @ 53 and also topped scored in a low scoring GF. Luke Whitington was also consistent at the top of the order with 259 @ 29. The 3 pronged pace attack was their main weapon though, with Jeff Bye's 38 wickets @ 9.58 topping the charts. Whitington's 26 @ 10 and Greg Bye's 20 @ 18 meant that the pressure was always on. These 3 shared all 17 wickets to fall in the GF. These guys definitely have the potential to challenge for the 2nd grade title next year.

Coo2ee Bay Rebels This new combined rebels side featured plenty of youth sprinkled with some experience, and the results were a near miss in the grand final. The revelation of the season was Chad Edwards who found himself in the unfamiliar opening position and capitalised on this to the extent of 512 runs @ 43. He found a willing ally in Nic Lochner who clocked up 454 @ 41, as well as snaring 22 dismissals in his debut year behind the stumps to lead all grades. The batsmen were supported by a deep bowling line-up with Edwards (22), Evan Madonis (19), and Ramesh Daberera (17) sharing the load. With 5 players from the GF team celebrating their 21 1' birthdays this season, the future looks bright for this squad.

Captain Cook Dolphins An excellent season for the dolphins which unfortunately ended during a semi-final that they were in control of for large periods. The team definitely benefited by bringing in an additional 5 th grade team that gave them much more depth. Most of the damage with the bat came at the top order with Paul Elder scoring 247 @ 82 and Cameron Hickson 187 ® 31, but it was their bowling that was their strength with Steve Burgess's skills not showing any signs of waning with 35 wickets @ 9.86. There was plenty of backup with Mitch McDiarmid (30 @ 14) and Stirling Wade (24 @ 12. Special mention to Samer Hague whose spin managed 17 @ 11 in what was a relatively barren year all- round for the tweakers. There is no doubt this team can beat anyone on their day and will be a handful next year.

La Perouse An exceptionally strong start to the year in fourth grade meant a move up to thirds, and they maintained this form enough to qualify for the semis where they went down to the eventual premiers Edna Puffett. Runs were shared around but they lacked anyone to dominate the attack consistently with Nathan Ardler the pick with 210 runs at 21. Ronald Timbery also chipped in with 176 @ 59 in his brief appearances. Peter Cooley continues to pile up the wickets, adding another 29 at a miserly 7.66 apiece. He missed the more regular support of Nathan Bowen who showed his value when available with 13 @ 13. As usual the boys from La Perouse played the game hard and a consistent squad next year may see them reaching higher honours.

19 Souths Juniors Another side with plenty of youth at its disposal, Souths narrowly missed out on the semi-finals. The side was full of consistent performers, but probably just lacked a strike player to take them to that next level. Batting was shared by Michael Coutts (243 @ 22), Blaise Prentice-Davidson (209 @ 17) and Aurnob Imtiaz (205 @ 23). On the bowling front Jawaad Karim carried the attack with 21 wickets @ 22, and he will be looking for a bit more support to take the team to the next level.

C omen arra A new side to MPSECA it took these guys a while to find their feet but when they did they were a threat to any side in the grade. Tim Scarfe dominated the batting with 437 @ 49, while John McCormack's 198 @ 22 assisted. Bowling sides out was their weakness and Daniel Ang stood alone with 22 wickets @ 14. Unfortunately a number of points lost due to lack of administration was probably the difference between making the semis and not, but with the benefit of experience these guys will no doubt be tough opposition next season.

38 Treasurer's Report

2012-13 was a challenging year on the fmances due to a substantial increase in the wicket hire fees as well as team insurance being charged to the association instead of being worn by the DCA as has historically been the case. The relatively late notice of these additional expenses made budgeting for the season difficult, and the decision was taken to wear a loss ($4850.10) rather than pass the entire cost onto our clubs. To mitigate this deficit, the association operated very leanly and focused on increasing revenues through sponsorship and fundraising, as well as maximising the returns on our cash reserves which are still deemed to be in a healthy state. Initiatives were taken to also increase advertising expenditure with a view of attracting new players and teams to the competition to ensure viability in the future.
