The 2012/2013 Season saw total team numbers in our main competition drop slightly once again continuing a trend over recent seasons. The grade most affected by this drop in numbers appears to be in 1 st grade where we are struggling to find enough competitive teams to fill the grade. The season saw us go with a combined 1 st and 2'1 grade competition with limited success. Throughout the off- season I have been in talks with nearby associations suffering similar problems as us especially in regard to their 1 st grade competitions with the notion of playing a combined l st grade competition with one or two of these associations. It may not happen this coming season but it may happen in the very near future. In 2012/2013 we had a total of 25 teams in the main competition compete over five grades with the Premiership winners being 1 st Grade — Souths Juniors; 2 nd Grade — Clovelly CC; 3 Grade — Edna Puffett Memorial XI; 4 th Grade — Clovelly CC and 5 th Grade — Doncaster. The Club Championship was taken out by Clovelly CC for the second season in a row. In the Twenty20 competition we had a total of 9 teams compete in a fairly even competition with Souths Juniors 1 once again coming out as deserved premiers. In a competition again affected by rain our Martin Shield team qualified for the quarter-finals against Camden but unfortunately the rain intervened during the course of the afternoon resulting in a drawn match, which saw Camden progress to the semi-finals. My thanks to our Patron Mr Harry Solomons and Kingsgrove Sports Centre, the South Sydney Junior Rugby League Football Club, Kookaburra and the Doncaster Hotel for their ongoing support and sponsorship of the Association. Finally I would like to thank all fellow Board Members, club delegates, umpires, scorers, volunteers and players who make up the competition and make it a success. Yours in cricket David Power Secretary 8 President's Report Ladies and Gentlemen: The 2012-2013 season marked the completion of 18 seasons since Moore Park, South Sydney and the Catholic Association joined to form the Moore Park South East Cricket Association. Season 2012-13 saw a further drop in teams in the Association despite an aggressive advertising and promotional campaign to draw teams to the Association. This is a major concern as for the past two years numbers have fallen. The Association is fully aware of the many issues relating to this including, demographics lack of affordable grounds that result in high consumer fees and the lack of juniors playing park cricket once they leave the junior ranks. The season finished in stark contrast to the previous season with all Minor Premiers in all grades winning their respective Grade Premiership. I congratulate all of those Premiership Clubs on their success in particular Souths Juniors who triumphed in first grade and at the same time notched up 24 consecutive grand final appearances. This is truly a remarkable feat and shows what a solid group of players they are with several of their current side featuring in many of those grand finals. This mighty club also took out the 20/20 competition for the third season in a row. My congratulations also to the Clovelly club who not only won the 2 ' and 4th grade premiership but were Club Champions for the second year in a row. Also Edna Puffett who recorded their first Premiership success and not to forget Doncaster who were consistent throughout the year in claiming the 5th grade trophy. Congratulations also to the many individuals whose achievements are recorded further in this report. The season did not enjoy the same success on the representative front as was the case in previous years. The Associations Martin Shield side recorded 2 wins out of 3 in standard competition however in the quarter finals the weather intervened and unfortunately our opposition who were higher on the ladder went through to the finals series. My thanks to our Captain and organizer Hippo who put in a tremendous effort in getting the side together and all but pulling off a place in the semi-finals. A big thanks also to selectors Greg Leslie, Bill Glacken, who also was scorer and Dave Power. The Associations only other representative game was against Northern Suburbs who defeated us in a close encounter. Also on the representative front I am pleased to announce negotiations were completed with Southern Highlands and it is anticipated that a regular fixture will take place in the Bowral area commencing in season 2013-2014. For an association to be successful, it needs support. I would like to thank a number of people for their support in season 2012-2013-: Noel Moig Agencies for the KOOKABURRA Sponsorship: We are in the final year of a three year agreement with Kookaburra.

  • A HISTORY of CLUB CRICKET in COUNTY DURHAM Chapter One
A HISTORY OF CLUB CRICKET IN COUNTY DURHAM Chapter One..........The eighteenth century In the beginning The first recorded cricket match in Durham was at Raby Castle in 1751. It was five years after the Duke of Cumberland and bayoneted Redcoats slogged through the county’s mud on their way to the Battle of Culloden. Defoe’s account of his travels through Great Britain had not long been published. Defoe found nothing remarkable in Darlington or Chester-le-Street except “dirt” but was impressed by Lumley Castle and acknowledged Lumley coal the best in the country. He thought Durham a “compact neatly contriv’d city” where clergy lived “in all the splendour and magnificence imaginable”. Durham cathedral and Saint Cuthbert’s remains were a shrine for pilgrims but the city was a vulnerable haven riding on a cut-throat sea. The poor lived in slums; the populace was prey to vagabonds, footpads and highwaymen. The Bishop of Durham bewailed “the scorn of religion”. His flock scratched a living on the land or burrowed beneath it for lead and coal; their leisure centred upon drinking and blood sports like cock-fighting. In 1742 John Wesley came across a village “inhabited by colliers only, and as such had been always in the first rank for savage ignorance, and wickedness of every kind. Their grand assembly used to be on the Lord’s Day on which men, women and children met together to dance, fight, curse, and swear, and play chuck-ball, span farthing, or whatever came to hand.” Somehow, sometime the game of cricket took root in these parts.

However who would host it was still up for grabs. Fortunately for the Breakers, the home Final was sewn up with a comprehensive nine wicket, bonus point win in game one. Victoria managed just 142 from 46 overs with Erin Osborne all but sealing her place in the Australian side with career best figures of 4-18 from 10 overs. In reply the Breakers made 1/144 in 35 overs with Leah Poulton hitting 60 and Alex Blackwell 70 not out. Victoria again batted first in game two. Led by 87 from veteran Mel Jones, the Spirit finished their 50 overs at 7/227. As they had done all season, Poulton (53) and Blackwell (22) laid the platform for the win with a 64 run opening partnership. Slightly behind the required run rate in the middle overs, Alyssa Healy quickly got things back up to speed with an entertaining 59 from 55 balls. Throughout this, Lisa Sthalekar (57 not out) anchored the innings and remained calm at the ‘death’ to see her side home with three wickets and 10 balls to spare.
