Secretary’s Report

I would like to present the Association’s 21st Annual Report to all members of the Moore Park South East Cricket Association. The 2015/2016 season saw our 1st Grade combine with Churches NSW in playing a Joint 1st Grade Competition with 4 teams from each Association participating in it. The inaugural season of this competition was a resounding success, providing all teams with a more varied competition, playing at new venues and differing match formats. The 1st Grade Competition was taken out by the Doncaster Cricket Club who won a hard fought final against Minor Premiers Clovelly. The MPSECA competition for 2015/2016 consisted of a total of 26 teams compete five grades. Apart from the 1st Grade Final which was played and won by Doncaster, the remaining grades Grand Finals were unfortunately all washed out on the second day of the match resulting in draws for all matches. This resulted with the Premiers being decided by the highest placed team on the competition table being declared Premiership winners, these were: 2nd Grade – Clovelly; 3rd Grade – Coogee Bay Rebels; 4th Grade – Komodo Dragons; 5th Grade - Clovelly. The Club Championship was taken out by Clovelly Cricket Club for the fifth successive season. The representative season saw our Martin Shield team qualify for the quarter-finals only to go down to Parramatta in a hard fought match. In the competition proper we were defeated by Northern Suburbs in Round 1 but came back to record wins against Blacktown City in Round 2 and Bankstown in Round 3. In our annual match against Bathurst we won a very close match for the second year in a row. My thanks to our Patron Mr. Harry Solomons and Kingsgrove Sports Centre, the South Sydney Junior Rugby League Football Club and Kookaburra for their ongoing support and sponsorship of the Association. I would also like to thank all fellow Board Members, club delegates, umpires, scorers, volunteers and players who make up the competition and make it a success.

Yours in cricket

David Power Secretary

President’s Report

Ladies and Gentlemen: The 2015-2016 season marked the completion of 21 seasons since Moore Park, South Sydney and the Catholic Association joined to form the Moore Park South East Cricket Association. It also marked the start of my thirty- ninth year as your President, a position I consider an absolute privilege to hold and be able to offer myself each year to be of service to the members of this great cricket Association. Season 2015-2016 was the season of innovation as the Association partnered with the Churches Cricket Association for the first time to play a combined first grade competition. This partnership became a reality following requests by first grade clubs, after season 2014-2015 to expand that competition. The Board approached the Churches Association and after several meetings to discuss topics including rules the Moore Park South East and Churches joint first grade competition became a reality. The first year of the combined competition saw teams play at Moore Park and grounds at Belfield and Homebush. Moore Park South East teams led the competition from the early rounds and provided three of the four finalists, with the inaugural winner being Doncaster in a tight grand-final with Clovelly, who were the Minor Premiers. My congratulations to the Donny and also to our three other teams who were more than competitive with their Churches counterparts. My thanks also to the Churches teams who played the game in tremendous spirit which certainly assisted in the smooth running of the inaugural combined competition. I would like to say a special thank you to the delegates of both MPSECA and CHURCHES who all put in a lot of hard yards to make this important innovation happen. As well as the combined first grade comp the Association ran four competitive lower grades in its usual competition format. We welcome new club True Believers and wish them success in coming years. The competition in the lower grades was strong with clubs keeping within each other’s grasp throughout the year. At the conclusion of the competition rounds Clovelly were Minor Premiers in Grades two, three and five with Komodo Dragons minor premiers in grade four. However weather played its part in the grand finals with Premiers being , Clovelly in grade two, Coogee Bay Rebels in grade three, Komodo Dragons in grade four and Clovelly in grade five. The Clovelly Club was also Club Champions for the fifth successive year. Congratulations also to the many individuals whose achievements are recorded further in this report. The Association’s representative season saw our Martin Shield side eliminated at the quarter-final stage despite some strong individual performances in the earlier rounds. On a more positive note the Association hosted Bathurst and despite weather necessitating a change in venue THE PLANK was retained in a very entertaining match. My thanks to Dave Power, Tony Pengue and Aurnob Imtiaz who organized the selection of players as well as match day facilities. My thanks to skippers Ash Azhar and Nic Lochner and all those players who gave their time to represent your Association, it was much appreciated. For an association to be successful, it needs support. I would like to thank a number of people for their support in season 2015/2016: Kookaburra: This sponsorship is used directly to assist in the ever increasing ground fees set by the landlords of our grounds. I am pleased to report this year saw the start of a new sponsorship deal with significant increase in funds from KOOKABURRA. My thanks to all at Kookaburra for their ongoing support.

8

Mr. Harry Solomons, Managing Director Kingsgrove Sports: Harry is not only our Patron but a long time supporter of park cricket in the South Sydney area having not only played many games in the former South Sydney Cricket Association but also represented that Association. Harry has a true understanding of Association cricket and what it takes to be a successful association and our success is helped by his support both at club and Association level. I thank Harry and the team at Kingsgrove Sports for their support and I urge all clubs to visit Kingsgrove Sports for all your teams and individual cricket requirements. South Sydney Juniors Leagues Club: To the Board of Souths Juniors my thanks for your continued support and the Association looks forward to continuing our relationship for many years to come. Centennial Parklands, Botany Council and Marrickville Council: Our thanks to these organisations and their staff who ensure our grounds are maintained each week. Umpires: My thanks to the umpires who each Saturday control our fixtures. A special thank you to Dave Power who is tasked with organizing and training our umpires. MPSECA Board: My thanks to all Board members especially Vice President and Secretary Dave Power whose contribution as an administrator in a voluntary capacity can never be thanked enough. MPSECA AFFILLIATED CLUBS AND PLAYERS: My sincere thanks for the support given by clubs and particularly the office bearers of our clubs whom I am aware spend many voluntary hours organizing their club each week. To all players and club supporters whom without you we do not have an Association, my thanks for your continued support of this great Association. Season 2015-2016 has concluded and as reported earlier this year saw the start of a partnership in first grade with the Churches Association. The Board believes there is a need to explore opportunities like this that will allow us to not only provide competitive cricket in all grades but grow your Association and therefore ensuring the future viability of this great sporting Association. I commend this report to the members and look forward to Season 2016-2017.

Umpires Report

On behalf of the Board of Management I would like to thank all the umpires for their dedication and assistance in making the 2015/2016 season a success. Umpiring can be a very difficult job and their position and decisions should be respected by all captains and players in the Association. I would like to personally thank our regular season umpires who have officiated in this Association for some time now: Geoff Brazel, Greg Leslie, Masud Rana, John Walden and David Ward. I would also like to welcome and thank three new umpires who joined the Association this season and did extremely well with good feedback coming from teams that they umpired: Michael Azzopardi, D M Motiur Rahaman and Paul Bochard. Special thank you to Leigh Martin for umpiring our Martin Shield matches and also our finals matches this season. We hope you will all be available to raising the finger once again for the upcoming summer season. Thanks once again for your help.

Representative Season Report

The 2015/2016 Representative Season saw us once again mount a formidable Martin Shield challenge winning 2 out of our 3 preliminary rounds before losing to Parramatta in the Qualifying Final. The Martin Shield competition is clearly within our reach with the calibre of players we have available and we intend to make another strong challenge again next season. The MPSECA (Plank) team was successful for the second year in a row against a determined Bathurst team in the annual fixture between the two teams in a game that went right down to the wire.

Martin Shield Round 1 – MPSECA v Northern Suburbs Rain on the Saturday ensured that this match was transferred to our back up synthetic wicket at Jellicoe Park and despite overcast skies the match was still able to be played and completed. We won the toss and elected to bat first in this Round 1 match and posted a formidable score of 6/235 after our allotted 55 overs. Top scoring for the MPSECA was Yves Silveira with 58 (which included 7 run 3s as a result of the slow outfield). Others to get among the runs were Cameron Bryant 38, Matt Ross 28, Ash Azhar 28, Chad Edwards 25 , Nic Lochner 24 and Todd Levings 19 not out. Defending this score we made a great start capturing 2 quick wickets with the score on 3. Northern Suburbs then fought back well posting a 101 third wicket partnership to claw their way back into the match. They then fought on to reach 3/152 before we claimed 3 wickets in quick succession to have them struggling at 6/158, but this was to be the last of our joy as we failed to claim another wicket and the Northern Suburbs lower order bats steered their team to victory at 6/236 in the 51st over. Final bowling figures for MPSECA were Ash Azhar 11 overs 1/43, Aaron Burrows 8 overs 2/34, Luke O’Sullivan 9 overs 2/31, Matt Ross 5 overs 1/32, Chad Edwards 11 overs 0/34, Asad Jafri 2 overs 0/20 and Abbey Bhavsar 5 overs 0/32.

Martin Shield Round 2 – MPSECA v Blacktown Round 2 saw us up against Blacktown away with a win a must if we were to qualify for the finals. We won the toss and decided to bowl first and Blacktown got off to a solid start reaching 56 before we claimed the first wicket. Another good partnership took their score to 1/106 before part-time spinner Cameron Bryant was brought into the attack. Cameron began taking wickets at regular intervals as the Blacktown batting line-up collapsed to be all out for 152. Cameron ended his spell with the excellent figures of 6/33 off 12 overs. Other wicket takers included Luke Course 7 overs 1/20, Stephen Savage 7 overs 1/37, Chad Edwards 5 overs 1/9 and Billy Saracoglu 6 overs 1/15. Chasing this total we lost an early wicket before Nic Lochner and Yves Silveira steadied the ship to take us up to 61 before we lost our next wicket. When Yves was dismissed for an excellent 59 we were in some trouble at 4/84 but a good partnership from Chad Edwards (25) and Kirk Adderley (28) took us within reach of Blacktown’s total. We lost a couple of more wickets but managed to pass Blacktown’s total of 152 with 7 wickets down in the 47th over.

11

Martin Shield Round 3 – MPSECA v Bankstown Round 3 was another must win game for the team in an away match against Bankstown at Jensen Oval. We again won the toss and elected to bowl first and did well to restrict Bankstown to 8/217 at the end of their allocated 55 overs. All the bowlers did well to restrict Bankstown to a run rate of less than 4 runs an over. The full list of bowlers were Billy Saracoglu 12 overs 4/34, Luke Course 9 overs 2/28, Luke O’Sullivan 8 overs 2/21, Grant McMillan 13 overs 0/41, Stephen Savage 7 overs 0/49, Aaron Burrows 5 overs 0/15 and Matt Ross 1 over 0/8. We made a solid start to the run chase with Nic Lochner the first wicket to fall for 15 with the score on 36. Matt Ross was in great touch at the other end and when we lost Yves Silveira for 12 and Kirk Adderley for 10 we had reached 3/86, but Matt continued on and was joined in the middle by Ash Azhar and together these two put on a partnership of 113 to take us to a commanding position in the chase. Ash was dismissed for 65 and Matt for an excellent 92 before Grant McMillan (12 not out) finished the job in the 49th over as we finished at 6/218. This win ensured us a place in the Finals Series.

Martin Shield Qualifying Final – MPSECA v Parramatta So to the Qualifying Final against Parramatta at McCredie Park Parramatta. The toss was won by Parramatta who elected to bat first. They got off to a steady start before we made the initial breakthrough with the score on 28, some good bowling followed and we picked up a few wickets and restricted their score to 5/72 after 26 overs. However Parramatta’s middle/lower order batsmen did well to reach a final total of all out for 197 after 50 overs. Our bowling figures were headed by Ash Azhar taking 4/35 off 11 overs, Chad Edwards 3/25 off 7 overs, Grant McMillan 2/19 off 9 overs and Luke Course 1/29 off 8 overs. In pursuit of this total we lost early wickets and continued to lose wickets at a regular rate to be 9/98 before an excellent last wicket stand between Michael Manna (37 not out) and Billy Saracoglu (22) helped get us to a total of 134 all out. The only other two batsmen to reach double figures were Ash Azhar (25) and Yves Silveira (13).

It was a good effort by the Martin Shield team to make it to the Qualifying Finals after losing our Round 1 match and the QF proved that we are not too far away to going that little bit further and winning this thing.

The Plank – MPSECA v Bathurst

Our last representative fixture of the season was our annual match against Bathurst, this year played in Sydney. Unfortunately due to overnight rain the match had to be transferred from Alan Davidson Oval to Jellicoe Park, but the game went ahead nevertheless and proved once again to be a hard fought match that went down to the wire. Bathurst won the toss and decided to bat first and due to some tight bowling from opening bowlers Dimitri Magoulias and Troy Isemonger we picked up an early wicket (by Troy) and restricted their scoring to a slow rate. Evan Madonis and Nathan Power replaced the opening bowlers and both picked up a wicket a piece in their spells. Nic Lochner was next into the attack and picked up 2 wickets in his spell and at one stage Bathurst had slumped to 5/59. Ash Azhar came to the attack and snared a wicket and Yves Silveira also joined in the fun coming on to take 2 wickets before a runout ended Bathurst’s innings on 139. Final bowling figures for MPSECA were Dimitri Magoulias 8 overs 0/13, Troy Isemonger 6 overs 2/18, Evan Madonis 6 overs 1/17, Nathan Power 4 overs 1/17, Nic Lochner 4 overs 2/29, Ryan Power 4 overs 0/16, Ash Azhar 4 overs 1/15 and Yves Silveira 4 overs 2/12. Special mention in the field to Dimitri who picked up 4 excellent outfield catches.

12

In reply to the 139 posted by Bathurst we got off to a slow but steady start despite losing an early wicket. Then we lost Louie Pengue (11) and Luke Turner (11) to be 3/47, but Yves Silveira was again in fine touch and helped us get out of trouble with some big hitting. However we lost a few quick wickets including Yves for 49 and at one stage we had slumped to 7/99. It was up to James Salakas and Evan Madonis to resurrect our innings and the two put on a 25 runs partnership before Evan was dismissed for 8. James was then joined in the middle by young Ryan Power and these two batted with composure to reel in the remaining runs as we reached the total at 8/140 with James finishing on 30 not out and Ryan 2 not out. A very closely fought match once again and everyone is looking forward to next year’s clash this time in Bathurst.

MPSECA Team v Bathurst 2016 Standing (LtoR) Louie Pengue, Paul Brien (Pres), Luke Turner, Mitch Macbeth, Troy Isemonger, Yves Silveira, James Salakas, Aurnob Imtiaz (Mgr) Kneeling (L to R): Evan Madonis, Nic Lochner, Nathan Power, Ryan Power, Dimitri Magoulias

MPSECA 1st Grade Report

Doncaster This season saw the MPSECA & Churches Cricket NSW combine to play a Joint 1st Grade Competition for the first time. It gave all teams a chance to play in a more competitive environment and with a variety of new teams and new grounds that has been lacking in 1st Grade competition. Taking out this inaugural 1st Grade Competition were the Doncaster Cricket Club who defeated Minor Premiers Clovelly in the final played at Parramatta. Doncaster batted first in the Final and made 9/192 at the end of their allotted 60 overs and then bowled with great control to limit Clovelly’s strong batting line-up to just 119 all out. Throughout the regular season it was Yves Silveira and Ashlee Azhar who led the way with the bat with Yves tallying an impressive 522 runs @ 65.25 and Ash wasn’t far behind scoring 424 runs @ 42.40 (including 2 centuries). Others to contribute with the bat included Ben Coughlin 174 runs @ 43.50 and Michael Dunlea 153 runs @ 51.00. Leading wicket takers for Doncaster were Luke Course 29 wickets @ 14.45, Ashlee Azhar 23 wickets @ 12.70, Gary Perryman 21 wickets @ 17.19 and Ben Hoenig 15 wickets @ 15.20. Clovelly Clovelly finished deserved Minor Premiers and defeated Doncaster in the first week of the semi-finals only to go down to the same team in the Final. Premierships are hard to win as Clovelly can attest to over the last two seasons but nonetheless this team always puts in a strong consistent performance and maybe their luck will change in the big matches in the seasons ahead. Clovelly had plenty of contributors with the bat this season lead by Tim Scullard with 444 runs @ 44.50, he was backed up by Justin Smith 196 runs @ 39.20, Grant McMillan 193 runs @ 24.13, Billy Saracoglu 186 runs @ 46.50 and Kirk Adderley 182 runs @ 16.55. The main wicket takers for the team were Tim Scullard snaring 18 wickets @ 13.61, Billy Saracoglu 15 wickets @ 10.80 and Justin Smith 13 wickets @ 16.08 (including a hat trick). Botany United Botany showed great improvement this season and were a genuine Premiership threat beating both Clovelly and Doncaster during the regular season. Botany defeated St Phil’s Turramurra South in the first week of the semi-finals before falling to eventual Premiers Doncaster in the Preliminary Final. Top runscorers for Botany were Nathan Power amassing 348 runs @ 43.50, Mark Schulstad 234 runs @ 33.43 and Andrew Frawley 233 runs @ 38.83. With the ball Botany were best served by Dimitri Magoulias taking 23 wickets @ 16.83, Vitan Bhavsar 22 wickets @ 10.18 and Hippo Giitsidis 21 wickets @ 16.19. Coogee Bay Rebels The Rebels finished just out of the top four this season but were still a force to be reckoned with. Leading runscorers for Coogee were Chad Edwards who tallied 447 runs @ 37.25, Nicholas Lochner 324 @ 29.45, Jeffrey O’Sullivan 169 @ 18.78 and James Salakas 155 runs @ 15.50. With the ball Coogee were best served by Chad Edwards capturing 26 wickets @ 16.50, Nicholas Lochner 24 wickets @ 15.38, Luke O’Sullivan 16 wickets @ 20.00 and Aaron Burrows 14 wickets @ 15.86. CCNSW Teams I would also like to acknowledge and thank the four CCNSW 1st Grade teams who made up a highly competitive competition: St Phil’s Turramurra South, Bethal Mar Thoma, St Andrew’s Parramatta and Castle Hill Wesley. 14

MPSECA 2nd Grade Report

Clovelly Clovelly were declared 2nd Grade Premiers for the season after the Grand Final was abandoned due to rain on the second day of the match. In these situations the team higher on the competition table are declared Premiers and as Minor Premiers, being the best team through the regular rounds of the competition, Clovelly thoroughly deserved to win the title. Their batting runs were shared around with the standouts being Craig Fussell 198 runs @ 39.60, Troy Isemonger 191 runs @ 27.29, Kris Baptista 190 @ 27.14 and Jordan Marsden 187 runs @ 26.71. Leading wicket takers for Clovelly were Mitchell Law 20 wickets @ 13.55, Alex Way 19 wkts @ 14.42, Jordan Marsden 19 wkts @ 19.89 and Rohan Stocker 18 wkts @ 15.67. Captain Cook The Cook can consider themselves desperately unlucky not to take out the title after being in a commanding position to win the Grand Final before the rain came to wash out the remainder of the game. It was an unfortunate way to end the season and not the way we want to see Premierships decided, but that’s cricket. Leading the way with the bat for Captain Cook were Max Silvester with 244 runs @ 30.50, Sanjay Prasad 234 runs @ 19.50 and Luke Clynick 205 runs @ 29.29. With the ball Cook were best served by Brandon Burgess capturing 19 wickets @ 20.53, he was supported by Samer Haque 14 wickets @ 11.29 and Mitchell McDiarmid 14 wkts @ 16.79. SRT SRT had a solid season before going down in a hard fought semi-final against Captain Cook. Leading run scorers for SRT this season were Rajdeep Talpade who amassed 322 runs @ 26.83, Sreenivasulu Gonuguntla 252 runs @ 22.91 and Mahendra Paradiya 221 runs @ 18.42. Leading wicket takers for SRT were Sam Chinthakinda with 23 wickets @ 12.91, Sreenivasulu Gonuguntla 15 wkts @ 8.60 and Sujit Kadam 13 wkts @ 14.85. Coogee Bay Rebels Coogee Bay did well to make the semi-finals only to lose in an extremely tight match to Clovelly. Starring with the bat for Coogee Bay this season were Ryan Lenton scoring 270 runs @ 33.75 and Damien Peters 156 runs @ 15.60. With the ball Coogee were best served by Thomas Davies who snared 20 wickets @ 14.50 and Liam Hinchcliffe with 15 wickets @ 27.27. Kingsford Apaches After winning 2nd Grade the previous season the Apaches would have come into this season full of confidence but it certainly didn’t go as they would have wished and eventually just missing out on a place in the top four. However some good performances were had with the bat by David Waterson 361 runs @ 30.08, Patrick Foley 168 runs @ 21.00 and Luke Malpass 167 runs @ 20.88 and with the ball by Patrick Foley taking 22 wickets @ 14.45 and Bryan Seymour 12 wickets @ 28.92.

MPSECA 3rd Grade Report

Coogee Bay Rebels Coogee Bay had a strong finish to the season winning their last two matches of the competition and then beating Botany in the semi-final to take them through to the Grand-Final. Treasurer’s Report

Season 2015/16 saw us turn a surprising $7404.89 profit despite the first fee reduction in recent memory. This was largely attributed to lower representative expenses due to fewer home games, as well as not travelling to Bathurst. In addition there were significant increases in Sponsorship and Fundraising, although these were partly attributable to timing of transactions around the Financial Year end. Ground costs were reduced due to fewer teams, as well as the unavailability of the Maccabi ground that comes at a higher cost through Randwick Council. It is hoped that this profit will be passed on to the teams in the form of lower fees in 2016/17 assuming other costs remain relatively stable.
