In 2014/2015 we had a total of 26 teams in the competition compete over four grades with the Premiership winners being 1st Grade – Clovelly CC 2; 2nd Grade – Kingsford Apaches; 3rd Grade – Clovelly; and 4th Grade – Botany United. The Club Championship was taken out by Clovelly CC for the fourth successive season. The representative season saw our Martin Shield team fail to qualify for the quarter-finals as a result of changes to the qualification rules. In the competition we defeated Fairfield/Liverpool in Round 1, then lost to Hawkesbury in Round 2 and our Round 3 match against Parramatta was washed out. To make up for this disappointment our team that travelled to Bathurst for the annual match on the long weekend in January against a Bathurst XI returned victorious with a closely fought win. The tragic passing of Phillip Hughes whilst playing for South Australia against NSW at the SCG had a profound effect on all cricketers and it was heartening to see that we as an association could pay our respects with a minutes silence on the Saturday following his passing. My thanks to our Patron Mr. Harry Solomons and Kingsgrove Sports Centre, the South Sydney Junior Rugby League Football Club and Kookaburra for their ongoing support and sponsorship of the Association. I would also like to thank all fellow Board Members, club delegates, umpires, scorers, volunteers and players who make up the competition and make it a success. The Association has had much discussion with Churches NSW Cricket Association in regard to a proposed joint 1st Grade competition for the 2015/2016 cricket season. Much work is still to take place if this joint competition is to become a reality for the upcoming season but the Board of Management is determined working towards making it a reality with the hope that it can be a positive move in the long term future of this association. Yours in cricket David Power Secretary 7 President’s Report Ladies and Gentlemen: The 2014-2015 season marked the completion of 20 seasons since Moore Park, South Sydney and the Catholic Association joined to form the Moore Park South East Cricket Association. Season 2014/15 saw an interesting year of park cricket for the Association. The Association fielded 4 grades as per the previous year and welcomed new club Komodo Dragons to our third grade competition. The Association followed a similar format as in previous years but had to schedule more one day games due to ground availability issues. I congratulate all of those Premiership Clubs on their success in particular Clovelly who fielded both their ones and twos in the first grade grand final as well as participating in the 3rd grade grand final – a truly remarkable feat! Remarkable as the first grade grand final saw Clovelly twos defeat the favourites in a match that went down to the final over, a wonderful game of cricket. Clovelly also took out the Club championship for the fourth year in a row. Congratulations to 2nd Grade Premiers, Kingsford Apaches who at long last have a Premiership although SRT were gallant in defeat with the grand final result seesawing

  • A HISTORY of CLUB CRICKET in COUNTY DURHAM Chapter One
A HISTORY OF CLUB CRICKET IN COUNTY DURHAM Chapter One..........The eighteenth century In the beginning The first recorded cricket match in Durham was at Raby Castle in 1751. It was five years after the Duke of Cumberland and bayoneted Redcoats slogged through the county’s mud on their way to the Battle of Culloden. Defoe’s account of his travels through Great Britain had not long been published. Defoe found nothing remarkable in Darlington or Chester-le-Street except “dirt” but was impressed by Lumley Castle and acknowledged Lumley coal the best in the country. He thought Durham a “compact neatly contriv’d city” where clergy lived “in all the splendour and magnificence imaginable”. Durham cathedral and Saint Cuthbert’s remains were a shrine for pilgrims but the city was a vulnerable haven riding on a cut-throat sea. The poor lived in slums; the populace was prey to vagabonds, footpads and highwaymen. The Bishop of Durham bewailed “the scorn of religion”. His flock scratched a living on the land or burrowed beneath it for lead and coal; their leisure centred upon drinking and blood sports like cock-fighting. In 1742 John Wesley came across a village “inhabited by colliers only, and as such had been always in the first rank for savage ignorance, and wickedness of every kind. Their grand assembly used to be on the Lord’s Day on which men, women and children met together to dance, fight, curse, and swear, and play chuck-ball, span farthing, or whatever came to hand.” Somehow, sometime the game of cricket took root in these parts.
