ORGANIZATION SUMMARY Rochester City (current budget $827,000) seeks a full time Artistic Director beginning with the 2015-16 season and renewable. The company of 14 dancers plus apprentices operates on a 30- week schedule. It performs The Nutcracker with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO) in Kodak Hall at the Eastman Theater (capacity 2,200), collaborates with the RPO on other productions including a recent production of Balanchine’s Serenade and holds its own season at the Nazareth College Arts Center (capacity 600). Noted for contemporary ballet, Rochester City Ballet (RCB) has performed at Jacob’s Pillow and in New York City.

POSITION DESCRIPTION The Artistic Director is responsible for conceiving, developing, and implementing RCB's artistic vision. Working with the Executive Director and Board of Directors s/he will successfully execute the ballet’s artistic production, programing, and outreach activities. The AD will be the primary voice in establishing the future artistic vision of RCB and is responsible for teaching company class, hiring and evaluating dancers, communicating with the Board of Directors, working collaboratively with the ED, and fostering partnerships in the community that fulfill the company mission. The Artistic Director is assisted by the Ballet Mistress and , office staff, and interns. Facilities include five well-appointed rehearsal studios, a costume shop with a costumer and assistants, conference room, and two, large open lobby areas.

The most competitive candidate for our AD position will be an emerging or established choreographer. The Committee will consider candidates who have not previously held Artistic Director positions, but applicants should have experience in management and/ or administration with a demonstrated record of successful artistic leadership.

Candidates should also have experience in season planning, scheduling, have an interest in fundraising, a keen ability with public speaking and an interest in engaging with donors. The AD will work collaboratively with the staff and Board to accomplish fund-raising objectives including involvement in developing donor relationships. The AD and ED will work in tandem to build consensus, develop, and maintain relationships in greater Rochester. Together, they act as RCB's principal voices in the community. The AD will supervise the Ballet’s educational and community engagement activities, taking a leading role in forging collaborations and partnerships in the field to increase RCB's visibility in the region.

Candidate assessment will be based upon the following essential skill sets: An accomplished ballet artist including strong staging and producing skills of contemporary ballet, a skilled teacher and coach with the ability to maintain high artistic standards, a proven ability to work collaboratively with other artists and administrators, an understanding of professional operations including financial issues and management of a nonprofit organization.
