Since 1990, EA>S has grown steadily and worked hard to deǀelop a proĨessional image, and to hire ƋualiĮed staī to carry out the corporaƟon͛s mandate. /nnoǀaƟǀe and creaƟǀe programs haǀe made EA>S a leader, and at Ɵmes – an edžample, in alternaƟǀes to ũusƟce opƟons. EA>S has met with success in these areas. Kn each side oĨ the Ɵpi is a Ĩeather hanging Ĩrom the peace pipe. Kne side oĨ the Ɵpi is coloured white and the other side black symbolinjing the need Ĩor understanding oĨ the two sides oĨ eǀery story. /n the middle oĨ the Ɵpi is a red opening, an open inǀitaƟon to the coming together oĨ both sides. dhe three elements: the peace pipe, Ɵpi and Ĩeathers are contained in a circle – the circle oĨ liĨe – without beginning or end. dhis creates the Ĩourth element in the design. ach oĨ these elements represents one oĨ the Ĩour direcƟons oĨ the compass. dhis theme is repeated again in the Ĩour sacred colours in the symbol: red, yellow, white and black. - 2 - Message From Board Chair Eishnawbe Aski >egal Serǀices orporaƟon ;EA>SͿ tachiya, to the people oĨ Eishnawbe Aski EaƟon ;EAEͿ Dy message will Ĩocus to acknowledge and share some oĨ the arduous edžperiences we haǀe endured as &irst EaƟon people this past Ĩew months. As we all know, it has been a ǀery diĸcult year Ĩor eǀeryone. So much has happened in a short while aīecƟng indiǀiduals, Ĩamilies and communiƟes. As a collecƟǀe society, the whole naƟon shares the disadǀantages oĨ each Ĩamily and community͖ thereĨore, we shall conƟnue to remain strong and resilient. dhere are three key issues / want to share with the people oĨ EAE in this report. &irstly, there was the cutback oĨ >egal Aid Kntario ;>AKͿ Ĩunds oĨ Ψ1ϯϯ million which had an indirect eīect on our organinjaƟon, mainly through the restructuring oĨ >AK. Secondly, the legislaƟon amendment, ill 1ϲ1. dhis legislaƟon limits our ability to become more independent as a orporaƟon. /nstead ill 1ϲ1 giǀes more authority to >AK on decision making. dhirdly, the orona sirus or oǀid-19 pandemic totally disarrayed the ũusƟce system in Kntario and all oĨ anada. dhe serǀices were in complete chaos Ĩor E>S creaƟng complicated situaƟons Ĩor staī, board and &irst EaƟon communiƟes. dhrough it all, we haǀe worked diligently to miniminje the negaƟǀe impact on our organinjaƟon and communiƟes as much as possible. te haǀe approached all leǀels oĨ goǀernment to proǀide support to EA>S during this diĸcult Ɵme to get the work done edžpected. y working together, we can stabilinje the situaƟon and moǀe Ĩorward.
