Further growth in the number of students and rising property taxes prompted Saint Ignatius Church and College to move in 1880 to the corner of Hayes Street and Van Ness Avenue, the current site of the Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall. The college opened its doors to 650 students and rave reviews in the local press. The institution occupied a full city block and was described as having “scientific laboratories and departments” as “thoroughly equipped as money can make them” and a library that contained “the cream of knowledge on all necessary sub- jects.” The attached church was described as “magnificent” and could hold up to 4,000 people. In 1903, the college added a “splendid new gymnasium,” described as the best in the city. The history of St. Ignatius Church and College at this location came to an abrupt end on April 18, 1906. On the morning of that day, an earthquake, followed by several days of fire, brought the church and college, and most of San Francisco, to almost complete ruin. The city and the institution, however, quickly rebuilt from the devastation. In September 1906, Saint Ignatius Church and School reopened in temporary quarters, known as the “shirt factory,” on the southwest corner of Hayes and Shrader streets, currently the site of one of the buildings of St Mary’s Medical Center. In 1927, St. Ignatius College moved into its new Liberal Arts Building, the present Kalmanovitz Hall, near the corner of Fulton and Parker Streets. In 1930, at the request of several alumni groups, Saint Ignatius College 1 changed its name to the University of San Francisco. September 11:Dr.Paul Farmer,winner of the MAY 9 As part of the university’s sesquicentennial celebration, USF President MacArthur genius grant for his work in promoting Stephen A. Privett, S.J., dedicates a time capsule containing objects from USF’s 150th year. The capsule, to be opened in 2105, contains Legacy and Promise, the university’s sesquicentennial history book; Legends of the health care as a fundamental human right for the Hilltop, a history of USF athletics; the 150th Anniversary Edition of the USF Magazine, copies of the Foghorn, the Ignatian Literary Magazine, and the world’s poorest citizens,speaks to more than 600 USF Yearbook; videos, photos, and invitations from the 150th anniversary weekend; CDS on the Campaign for USF and Celebrating the USF Jesuit members of the USF community on “Using Community; the campus master plan, an alumni directory, and a catalog of classes; a KUSF decal; a Green and Gold Beanie (dink); an Ipod; the 2006 Medicine as a Tool for Social Justice.” Service and Merit Award brochure; a video on the new student orientation, flyers from student events; and the Vision, Mission, and Values Statement of USF.

MAY 13 The Spring Gala, a community celebration honoring USF’s alumni and friends, is held at the Westin St. Francis Hotel. In keeping with the universi- ty’s 150th anniversary year, Legacy and Promise is the theme for the evening, celebrating individuals and groups who made a significant contri- bution to USF. Award recipients include Arthur Zief Sr. ’41, JD ’47, alumnus of the year; Leslie W. McBee ’69, professional achievement award; the USF Jesuit Community, service award, and USF alumni who joined the Peace Corps and Jesuit Volunteer Corps Alumni, service awards.

MAY 19–MAY 21 1,675 undergraduate, graduate, and law students participate in the May 2006 commencement exercises. The commencement marks the final event of the sesquicentennial year, and the university honors its 1951 undefeated football team for its role in combating racism. The university also bestows honorary degrees on three of the Bay Area’s most influential leaders: Michael Tilson Thomas, music director of the San Francisco Symphony; Richard Blum, founder and chairman of the Himalayan Foundation; and Gloria Duffy, CEO of the Commonwealth Club of California. The School of Nursing and the School of Education bestow an honorary degree on Alice B. Hayes, scientist, educator, and former president of the University of San Diego. The School of Law honors Claudia Smith, civil rights activist and attorney for Latin American immigrants.

SEPTEMBER 11 The annual Mass of the Holy Spirit welcomes the USF community to the fall semester. The homily is delivered by Fr. Gerard Jean-Juste, a Catholic priest jailed for his efforts to promote democratic ideals and foster human rights in his native Haiti. At the Mass, Fr. Jean-Juste receives an honorary doctorate from USF.

SEPTEMBER 13 Fromm Hall, formerly Xavier Hall, opens its doors after 18 months of con- struction and renovation resulting from a $10 million gift from the Friends of the Fromm Institute for Lifelong Learning. In 1976, Alfred and Hanna Fromm began the Fromm Institute, which now offers classes taught by retired pro- fessors to more than 1,200 older learners. The building houses the offices and classrooms of the Fromm Institute, a multipurpose lobby, administrative offices for St. Ignatius Parish, an undergraduate residence hall, and class- rooms and offices for USF’s visual arts program.

OCTOBER 27 AND 28 Seeking to educate and mobilize American Catholics to join the fight against global poverty, the Joan and Ralph Lane Center for Catholic Studies and Social Thought at USF co-sponsors a two-day national conference on global poverty at St. Mary’s Cathedral in San Francisco. The conference is also sponsored by the Archdiocese of San Francisco, Catholic Healthcare West, Catholic Relief Services, the Daughters of Charity, the Seton Institute, and the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. The keynote speaker is Jeffrey Sachs, director of the Earth Institute and author of The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for Our Time. Panel speakers include USF President Stephen A. Privett, S.J., and Charles Geschke, chair of USF’s Board of Trustees.

DECEMBER 5 USF’s long-standing commitment to social justice in the local and global community is recognized by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, which designates USF as one of just 76 community engaged col- leges and universities in the nation. In awarding the classification, the Carnegie Foundation says that USF’s community engagement programs are “exemplary” and that the university demonstrates an “excellent alignment between mission, culture, leadership, resources, and practices that support dynamic and noteworthy community engagement.”

CHRISTOPHER BROOKS, assistant professor of computer science, was given the University Faculty Service Learning Award at USF’s 30th Annual Merit and Service Awards event.

BRANDON BROWN, associate dean for sciences, penned an essay earning Seed magazine’s grand prize. The essay, “Rebuild the House of Science”, was published in the magazine’s November 2006 issue.

LEWIS BUZBEE, professor of writing, had his book, The Yellow-Lighted Bookshop: A Memoir, A History, published by Greywolf Press. He also had his book, After the Gold Rush: Stories, published by Tupelo Press.

RONGXIN CHEN AND ZHAN LI, professors of business, launched a biannual scholarly journal entitled the Journal of Asia Business Studies.

MICHAEL CHOROST, adjunct professor of rhetoric and composition, wrote Rebuilt, which was honored with the 2006 PEN/USA Book Award for Creative Nonfiction.

KEVIN CHUN, associate professor of psychology, was selected as “one to watch” in the American Psychological Association’s periodical Monitor on Psychology.

DOMINIC DAHER, director, internal audit and tax compliance, had his article, “The Business Purpose of Substantiation Requirements,” published in Taxation of Exempts.

JOSHUA DAVIS, associate professor of law, wrote an article for the San Francisco Daily Journal about the Supreme Court’s decision to support Oregon in state-sanc- tioned, medically assisted suicide.

ROBERT ELIAS, professor of politics, received the Sarlo Prize, USF’s highest honor recogniz- ing faculty work related to the university’s mission, vision, and values.
