We had several quality practices and the 2008-09 C-USA PRESEASON AWARDS: great experience of playing the Senegalese and South Africa national teams. We lost the first two games (voted by coaches) and won the third, so we were able to see the improvement." COACHING STAFF PRESEASON TOP FIVE Doherty's coaching staff this season is very similar to last season. Associate head coach Milton Barnes enters his second season with the Mustangs while assistants Steve Lutz and Malcolm Farmer are 1. Memphis in their third season on the Hilltop. Brion Raven joined the Mustangs during the summer as the director of 2. UAB basketball operations. "It is nice to have generally the same staff. We know each other better and have a level of trust that 3. Tulsa has developed over previous seasons. That combined with the improved communication through the office setup in the Crum Basketball Center, should help us do an even better job of maximizing every- 4. UTEP one's contributions." 5. Southern Miss The basketball staff combines 61 years of collegiate coaching. Their experience includes 12 confer- ence titles and 10 conference tournament championships. They have earned 23 postseason appear- ances, including 17 bids to the NCAA Tournament with 10 trips to the Sweet 16, eight Elite Eights, three 2008-09 PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR Final Fours, and a national championship. This summer, Farmer was promoted to an assistant coaching position after two years as the director Robert Vaden, UAB, G/F, 6-5, Sr., Indianapolis, Ind. of operations. He filled the spot vacated when Lance Irvin became an assistant coach at Southern Illinois. "Malcolm is a vital part of our staff and this will give us a chance to more fully utilize his talents," 2008-09 PRESEASON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM says Doherty. "He has been instrumental in laying the groundwork for the bright future of SMU basketball. We are also grateful for Lance's efforts in building the foundation here. It is a great opportunity for Lance Robert Dozier, Memphis, F, 6-9, Sr., Lithonia, Ga. to move closer to his hometown of Chicago." Stefon Jackson, UTEP, G, 6-5, Sr., Philadelphia, Pa. BACK COURT The Mustangs return Mike Walker (G, 6-0, 190, So.), Ryan Harp (G, 6-4, 190, So.), and Alex Jerome Jordan, Tulsa, C, 7-0, Jr., Kingston, Jamaica Malone (G/F, 6-8, 185, So.) in the back court. They are joined by junior college transfer Derek Williams (G, 6-1, 170, Jr.) as well as freshmen Justin Haynes (G/F, 6-4, 190, Fr.), Ryan Maag (G, 6-0, 170, Fr.), Jermaine Taylor, UCF, G, 6-4, Sr., Tavares, Fla. and Paul McCoy (G, 5-11, 175, Fr.). Robert Vaden, UAB, G/F, 6-5, Sr., Indianapolis, Ind. Ryan Harp played every game and averaged 25.7 minutes per game last season, the most of any freshman. He averaged 4.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.73 assists, and .73 steals. Harp also earned the coaches' award given at the team's annual banquet. "Ryan arrived in great shape and ran a 4:55 mile this summer. We know what we are going to get with Ryan on the defensive end. We know he is going to guard, run the floor, and dive on loose balls. What I want to see from Ryan is a relaxed shooter. He is a technically sound shooter; he just needs to be relaxed and shoot the ball with confidence." Justin Haynes is a wing from Palmdale High School in Palmdale, Calif. He averaged 15 points, five rebounds, and three assists as a junior while helping his team to a 21-6 record. He was named All-Golden League and Honorable Mention all C.I.F. "Justin is an athletic wing player with great size", said Doherty. "He has the ability to pass, handle, and shoot as well as attack the basket and make the perimeter jump shot. His versatility makes him a difficult defensive matchup. It is exciting to see a player such as Justin with so much upside to his game." Ryan Maag joins the Mustangs as a non-scholarship player from Houston Second Baptist. He was a two-time All-State first-team selection by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and two-time TAPPS Final Four All-Tournament Team member. As a senior, he averaged 20.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 2.7 steals. "Ryan is a tough kid. He is also very strong and can really shoot the basketball. He has the ability to contribute on the floor and will help us get better every day." Alex Malone played in 29 games as a freshman and is the third-leading returning scorer after averaging 7.6 points. He also grabbed 3.1 rebounds per outing in a little more than 19 minutes per game. "He is one of the more talented guys on our team," states Doherty. "He played well at times in Africa. His aggressiveness and toughness have improved great- ly. We really want him to be a more consistent shooter and more consistent ball-handler, but Alex has a lot of talent and has made great strides." Paul McCoy joins the Mustangs from Grant High School in Portland, Ore. He was rated the 10th-best point guard by Scout.com in the class of 2008. He was a two-time first-team all-state selection in Oregon while leading Grant to the 6A (large-class) state title. McCoy averaged 16.5 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals as a senior. Grant is the same high school that produced current SMU football head coach June Jones. "Paul is one of the more high-profile players we have brought in here. He is a winner. He was a state champion in basketball as well as all-state in football, basketball, and track. I think once he gets settled and comfortable, he has a chance to be a great player for SMU." Mike Walker is the Mustangs lone returning point-guard after the graduation of Jon Killen. Walker started 17 times and played in 29 of 30 games. He scored 5.4 points per game while averaging 1.93 assists and 0.83 steals. "Mike played great in Africa," said Doherty. "He is really starting to understand the game. He has gotten a lot tougher and during the Africa trip, he went after some loose balls that he didn't his freshman season. He has become a very good shooter, so I look for big things out of Mike this year." Derek Williams averaged 19.1 points, 4.5 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game while earning All-Western Junior College Athletic Conference honors. He shot 48.5 percent from the floor, 32.8 percent from 3-point range and 70.9 percent from the free throw line. "Derek is a winner with great leadership skills and great energy. He is fast with the basketball and can see and deliver. He is also a good shooter that can effectively run a pick and roll." FRONT COURT The Mustangs return their top two post players in Bamba Fall (C, 7-1, 220, Sr.) and Papa Dia (F, 6-9, 258, So.). Mouhammad Faye (F, 6-9, 208, Jr.) will be in his first full season at SMU after transferring in the middle of the 2007-08 season and Tomasz Kwiatkowski (C, 7-1, 245, So.) also returns after limited action last season. Frank Otis (F, 6-6, 230, Fr.) and Cort Hoge (F, 6-10, 240, Fr.) will be the freshmen in the front court. Papa Dia was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team after averaging 10.9 points and 6.4 rebounds in league play, that ranked him first in

He reminds me a little of Donatas Rackauskas (SMU 2002-07). I really value big guys that can handle the ball and shoot the ball." (on Tomasz Kwiatkowski) "I want to see him settle down and have a better feel of the game. He is big, he is strong, and he can run the floor. Tomasz needs to do a better job of slowing down and letting the game come to him. Sometime he gets overzealous and fouls or turns the ball over. I think he needs to relax and play and he can be a productive guy for us." (on Ryan Maag) "Ryan is a tough kid. He is also very strong and can really shoot the basketball. He has the ability to contribute on the floor and will help us get better every day." (on Alex Malone) "He is one of the more talented guys on our team. He played well at times in Africa. His aggressiveness and toughness have improved greatly. We really want him to be a more consistent shooter and more consistent ball-handler, but Alex has a lot of talent and has made great strides." (on Paul McCoy) "Paul is one of the more high-profile players we have brought in here. He is a winner. He was a state champion in basketball as well as all-state in football, basketball, and track. I think once he gets settled and comfortable, he has a chance to be a great player for SMU." (on Robert Nyakundi) "I call him Big Shot Rob. Last year, I suspended him because he was out of shape. He didn't make his mile time and he didn't work that hard in practice. Rob now has become one of our hardest workers and I am so proud of him. The thing that Rob can do, maybe better than anyone I have coached, is shoot the basketball. All I need is for him to be in shape and he can change to complexion of a game because of his ability to shoot the ball." (on Frank Otis) "Frank is a wing player with good size and strength. He plays extremely hard and has outstanding toughness, which we need. Frank has a tremendous ability to compete and comes from a winning high school program. McClymonds High School went 32-0 last year and won the state title, the year before they were state runner-up in California. He definitely understands what it takes to win, and his desire and intensity give him a chance to be a special player." (on Mike Walker) "Mike played great in Africa. He is really starting to understand the game. He has gotten a lot tougher and during the Africa trip, he went after some loose balls that he didn't his freshman season. He has become a very good shooter, so I look for big things out of Mike this year." (on Derek Williams) "Derek is a winner with great leadership skills and great energy. He is fast with the basketball and can see and deliver. He is also a good shooter that can effec- tively run a pick and roll.” SCHEDULE "The goal has been to build the schedule as we build the program. We are work- ing toward our goal of being a top-25 program and scheduling is an important part of that. Our student-athletes want the opportunity to play top competition as we continue to establish a new breed of Mustang basketball." "The fact that teams from power conferences are playing home-and-home series with SMU shows the national respect that is building for SMU basketball. The Crum Basketball Center and the upgrades to Moody Coliseum as well as con- secutive top-35 recruiting classes have sent a message that SMU is serious about being a nationally-recognized program." "The entire schedule shows the evolution of SMU basketball. We have 12 games on the schedule against 2008 postseason teams, including six of those at home. Moody Coliseum is going to be the site of great competition this season and beyond."
