So why is this trio of seniors and the Simi Valley High basketball team being overlooked? Truth be told, that may be the status of the Pioneers for the 2016-17 basketball season. At least for the start, that is. Transformed by graduation, playing for the first time in four seasons without stalwarts Kaden Young, Kyle Hamilton and Jordan Alexander, Simi Valley will be playing fresh faces. Even with playoffs in three straight seasons, the Pioneers are still flying under the radar in the Coastal Canyon where Oak Park has been on top. Funny thing is, Coach Ryan Bradshaw and his Pioneers don’t mind one iota. They will simply use the position as underdog as a motivational fodder. “I think because we don’t have Kaden, Kyle and Jordan, because we’re bringing back only four players from last year’s team, the natural assumption is that we’re down this year,” said Bradshaw, Simi Valley’s fourth-year head coach. “But the truth is we feel really good about this team. We’ve got players like Fisher who have been there and proved throughout the summer that they are ready to step up their game.” “Our Junior Varsity team least year was 18-6 and our lower levels competed against top teams. We’ve got some players moving up who are great competitors, have solid skill and are going to fight to make us a championship team.” Last season, Simi Valley turned in a respectable 14 win campaign that led to a playoff appearance in the Division 2A playoffs. Unfortunately for the Pioneers, they lost a tough battle on the road to Temple City and went home after one game. “There were some tears that night for the players that were graduating, my hope is the returners remember that moment and use it as motivation to push themselves to new heights.” [continued] This season, the Pioneers are hoping those heights increase their win total and lengthen their playoff run. The trio of seniors who will be at the fore front trying to lead the Pioneers to the levels seen years ago will have some help this year. Simi Valley boasts a seasoned, competition-tested scorer in junior Max Edwards. Splitting time in the starting lineup and coming off the bench, the six foot six inch forward figures to thrive this season. Also, moving up from the Junior Varsity team is Most Valuable Player and two-sport athlete Justin Campbell. Justin averaged 14.8 points per game along with 8.9 rebounds per game as a freshman. In addition, Justin blocked 58 shots and led the Junior Varsity team in three-pointers made. Justin is also very accomplished on the baseball diamond pitching for not only the Pioneers last season but for the United States 15 and Under National team. Bradshaw and his staff are thrilled to have Justin back this season. Feisty, fiery senior Jacob Smalling returns to basketball to offer intensity and passion for the Pioneers. Nick Fanderlik, Nick Battung and Issac Dominguez also move up from Junior Varsity to add depth to the Pioneers at the guard positions. What’s apparent is that chemistry and depth on this team will be notable assets. “There is no doubt that we gained a lot of confidence in our team over the summer,” Bradshaw said of his squad. The season tips off during Thanksgiving week when they head to the Chaminade tournament, then will return home to play in the program’s own Simi Valley Tip Off Classic where the Pioneers are always looking to win it. Let’s go Simi Valley High School Commitment to Excellence PIONEER BASKETBALL 2016-2017 Welcome to another exciting year of Pioneer Boys Basketball! As principal of Simi Valley High school, I am thrilled to be able to join you in cheering on our teams throughout the season. Head Coach Ryan Bradshaw and his assistant coaches have the experience, expertise, and enthusiasm to make our players unstoppable on the court. I am confident that the 2016- 2017 season will prove to be outstanding in every sense of the word. Everyone involved in Boys Basketball owes a huge debt of gratitude to the fans. The loyalty and wholehearted support of our parents, students, and community members contribute enormously to the success of our teams. That roar of the crowd is both encouragement and reward for our players. Each one of you in the stands is a valued part of program and its long tradition of excellence. It’s my privilege to join you in the stands, and I look forward to meeting many of you at the games. It’s going to be a great year for Pioneer Boys Basketball – absolutely Classic! Coach Bradshaw begins year four looking to build on growth from last season where the Pioneers made their third consecutive appearance in the CIF playoffs. In 2016, Coach Bradshaw has the entire program thinking bigger. The Pioneers have made it their goal to win the Coastal Canyon League Title. With a mix of upper and underclassmen, the Pioneers are ready to make a new footprint. Looking back, Ryan is a Pioneer lifer. Growing up, he was a ball boy while his father Dean led the Pioneers to be one of the best teams in Southern California year-in and year-out. Ryan then began his playing career under head coach Christian Aurand with the Pioneers earning a trip to the CIF Championship game in 2000. Ryan went on to graduate from Chico State with a degree in Kinesiology. His passion for the Simi Valley Basketball program found him right back in the Simi Valley gymnasium to launch his coaching career. Ryan coached the Sophomore and Junior Varsity levels before being elevated to Head Coach. Ryan will call on lessons learned from Pioneer legends

Pictured aboved are two of UCLA’s greatest basketball figures – on the left, Lew Alcindor (now Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) alongside the late head coach John R. Wooden. Alcindor helped lead UCLA to consecutive NCAA Championships in 1967, 1968 and 1969. Coach Wooden served as the Bruins’ head coach from 1948-1975, helping UCLA win 10 NCAA Championships in his 24 years at the helm. 111 RETIRED JERSEY NUMBERS #25 GAIL GOODRICH Ceremony: Dec. 18, 2004 (Pauley Pavilion) When UCLA hosted Michigan on Dec. 18, 2004, Gail Goodrich has his No. 25 jersey number retired, becoming the school’s seventh men’s basketball player to achieve the honor.
