  • Finn Ballard: No Trespassing: the Post-Millennial
Page 15 No Trespassing: The postmillennial roadhorror movie Finn Ballard Since the turn of the century, there has been released throughout America and Europe a spate of films unified by the same basic plotline: a group of teenagers go roadtripping into the wilderness, and are summarily slaughtered by locals. These films may collectively be termed ‘roadhorror’, due to their blurring of the aesthetic of the road movie with the tension and gore of horror cinema. The thematic of this subgenre has long been established in fiction; from the earliest oral lore, there has been evident a preoccupation with the potential terror of inadvertently trespassing into a hostile environment. This was a particular concern of the folkloric Warnmärchen or ‘warning tale’ of medieval Europe, which educated both children and adults of the dangers of straying into the wilderness. Pioneers carried such tales to the fledging United States, but in a nation conceptualised by progress, by the shining of light upon darkness and the pushing back of frontiers, the fear of the wilderness was diminished in impact. In more recent history, the development of the automobile consolidated the joint American traditions of mobility and discovery, as the leisure activity of the road trip became popular. The wilderness therefore became a source of fascination rather than fear, and the road trip became a transcendental voyage of discovery and of escape from the urban, made fashionable by writers such as Jack Kerouac and by those filmmakers such as Dennis Hopper ( Easy Rider, 1969) who influenced the evolution of the American road movie.

  • House of Thousand Corpses
"HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES" Written by R.W. Zombie Revised 3-31-00 FADE IN: INT. OLD HOUSE - LIVING ROOM - NIGHT We see a LITTLE GIRL dancing around in a grainy super 8 home movie. A LITTLE BOY wearing a monster MASK enters the frame. He struggles to lift a double barrel shotgun. He points it at the girl and pretends to SHOOT. GIRL (V.O.) (whispering slowly) Once I had a cat, he was the sweetest little guy. Then one day he got sick and died. My heart was broken. My whole body hurt. She continues dancing. The little boy imitates her. GIRL (V.O.) After that, I saw things differently, everything could be summed up with three simple words... fuck the world. The camera swings over to some ugly, toothless relations watching the show. They laugh. EXT. SPAULDING'S - NIGHT We open on a dark, lonely stretch of two lane blacktop. Off to the side of the road we see a rundown gas station. RADIO ANNOUNCER (V.O.) Hey, welcome back to 93.5 WJRC's Halloween monster weekend. I'm Jimmy Ray and I'll be bringing you the oldies, the goldies and sometimes the moldies. The good, the bad and the uglies straight from the WJRC vaults. A weathered wooden sign proclaims CAPTAIN SPAULDING'S WORLD OF MONSTERS AND MADMEN, sits atop the building. A smaller sign below reads FRIED CHICKEN AND GASOLINE. RADIO ANNOUNCER (V.O.) Hey, kids still trying to decide on the right costume? Well why not head on down to Randall's Penny Save located on Kimball Rd.

  • The Critical-Industrial Practices of Contemporary Horror Cinema
Off-Screen Scares: The Critical-Industrial Practices of Contemporary Horror Cinema A Dissertation SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Joseph F Tompkins IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Richard Leppert, Adviser January 2013 © Joseph F Tompkins, 2013 Acknowledgements I would like to extend my thanks to the many friends, colleagues, teachers, and family members who provided the necessary support and advice to usher me through both the dissertation writing process and my time as a graduate student. I am grateful to the members of my dissertation committee: Mary Vavrus, Gil Rodman, John Mowitt and Gary Thomas, for their lasting guidance, scholarly advice, and critical feedback. In particular, this project was hatched in Mary Vavrus’s Political Economy of Media seminar, and for that, I’m especially indebted. Also, to Gary Thomas, who taught me, among other things, the power of good, clean prose as well as the radical possibilities of making the classroom into a vitalizing, “heterotopian” space—a rampart against the “mechanical encrustation on the living.” I would also like to convey my sincerest appreciation to my mentor, Richard Leppert, who, since my earliest days as an undergraduate, has been a source of both professional guidance and companionship. Richard is my model—as an educator and a friend. I would also like to thank Jochen Schulte-Sasse, Robin Brown, Cesare Casarino, Liz Kotz, Keya Ganguly, Timothy Brennan, Siobhan Craig, and Laurie Ouellette for their sage advice during my graduate studies. Many friends and colleagues provided me intellectual and emotional support throughout the years: Mathew Stoddard, Tony Nadler, Alice Leppert, Manny Wessels, Mark Martinez, Doyle “Mickey” Greene, Kathie Smith, and Eleanor McGough.

  • Hellfest 2017- Friday
Hellfest 2017- friday After filling French breakfast in hotel (fresh croissants with jam), we went from Nantes placed 30 km away from the event. We reached gates of hell (literally and figuratively) at noon. Crossing VIP entrance always gives me feeling of honor. Three of us, and two journalists from “Gitarzysta” press, we’re composing an elite team representing Poland. Other part of our group is already mixed up with all of international company. Weather reports on next three days were merciless, cloudless skies and heat waves. Will this be my quest of survival? The French seemed to prepare for such possibility. In the press enclave a pretty big pool was waiting for us, so the 30 degree, desert like conditions for a moment weren’t too big of a deal. The courtyard changed too, now with “grass rugs”, parasols, tables and chairs were perfect for a break and relax. Behind the pool there were steel hangars, which were supported by a humongous spine with a ribcage, extraordinary! Hangars were filled with bars, telebims and places to hide from sun’s blaze. Press’ tent with conference room, and workspace for journalists, equipped with local laptops and internet access, that’s a standard here. New addition to the interiors, was a fountain on a pedestal decorated with a group of hooded monks. Disappointing was a lack of hammocks that were present last year, on which I’ve had plenty of regenerating naps between the concerts. Vision of stroke and spine pain was real once again. Oh well, time for work! First one on my list was TRUE BLACK DOWN, conveniently playing on TEMPLE scene, placed near to exit from press’ area.
