E-mail: [email protected] Abstract We investigated if passerine birds act as important predators of small vertebrates within the Neotropics. We surveyed published studies on bird diets, and information on labels of museum specimens, compiling data on the contents of 5,221 stomachs. Eighteen samples (0.3%) presented evidence of predation on vertebrates. Our bibliographic survey also provided records of 203 passerine species preying upon vertebrates, mainly frogs and lizards. Our data suggest that vertebrate predation by passerines is relatively uncommon in the Neotropics and not characteristic of any family. On the other hand, although rare, the ability to prey on vertebrates seems to be widely distributed among Neotropical passerines, which may respond opportunistically to the stimulus of a potential food item. -

Indeed, Costa Rica makes you feel odd if you are NOT wearing a pair. We enjoyed a fantastic tour of some of the most revered sites in Costa Rican birding; we started out near San Jose in the dry Central Valley, before driving over to the Caribbean side, where foothill birding was done in and around Braulio Carrillo National Park, and held beautiful birds from the outset, like Black-and-yellow Tanager, Black-thighed Grosbeak, and daytime Spectacled and Crested Owls. A tour first was also provided by a Thicket Antpitta seen well by all. From there we continued downslope to the lowlands of that side, and the world famous La Selva Biological Station. La Selva is a place where birds feel particularly plentiful, and we racked up a heady list of birds on our one and a half days there, including Rufous and Broad-billed Motmots, Black-throated Trogon, Pale-billed, Cinnamon and Chestnut-colored Woodpeckers, Keel-billed and Yellow-throated Toucans, and Great Curassow, to name just a few of the highlights, which also included several two-toed sloths, the iconic Red-eyed Tree Frog (photo last page), and Strawberry Poison Dart Frogs of the much publicized “blue jeans” form that adorns so many tourist posters in this Sarapiqui region. -

Interspecific Social Dominance Mimicry in Birds

The evolutionary plausibility of ISDM has been established previously by the Hairy-Downy game (Prum & Samuelson). Psychophysical models of avian visual acuity support the plausibility of visual ISDM at distances ∼>2–3 m for non-raptorial birds, and ∼>20 m for raptors. Fifty phylogenetically independent examples of avian ISDM involving 60 model and 93 mimic species, subspecies, and morphs from 30 families are proposed and reviewed. Patterns of size differences, phylogeny, and coevolutionary radiation generally support the predic- tions of ISDM. Mimics average 56–58% of the body mass of the proposed model species. Mimics may achieve a large potential deceptive social advantage with <20% reduction in linear body size, which is well within the range of plausible, visual size confusion. Several, multispecies mimicry complexes are proposed (e.g. kiskadee- type flycatchers) which may coevolve through hierarchical variation in the deceptive benefits, similar to Müllerian mimicry. ISDM in birds should be tested further with phylogenetic, ecological, and experimental investigations of convergent similarity in appearance, ecological competition, and aggressive social interactions between sympatric species. -

Although I only knew Ted for a brief time, his Curators charisma, enthusiasm, and encyclopedic knowledge of birds were inspiring. Here I’ve posted an abridged version of the nomination letter that Gregg Gorton, Van Remsen, and I submitted. __________________________________________________________________ Robb T. Trip Report: Mexico Yucatan Extension 13th to 19th March 2013 (7 days) Mexican Sheartail by Rich Lindie Trip report compiled by tour leader: Rich Lindie RBT Yucatan Trip Report 2013 2 Royal Tern by Rich Lindie We began our first ever Rockjumper tour to Yucatan’s peninsula with a short afternoon stroll in the peaceful surroundings of the Puerto Morelos Botanical Gardens. Here, in the dry limestone forests, we found our first flocks of noisy Yucatan Jays, Yucatan Vireo, Tawny-winged and Ivory-billed Woodcreepers, Red-throated Ant Tanager and Orange Orioles, before heading to the mangroves around town. In the mangroves and adjacent wooded areas we found small bird parties containing Black-throated Green, Black Throated Blue, Cape May, Yellow-throated, Palm and Magnolia Warblers, as well as our first Grey Catbirds and Couch's Kingbirds. Not bad, considering it was an arrival day! Our first full day saw us birding along a variety of roads in the dry forest surrounding Puerto Morelos town. The majority of these roads were access tracks to some of the innumerable 'cenotes' (wells) that are found here and throughout much of the northern Yucatan. Visitors come to these cenotes for activities like swimming and zip-lining and have little impact on the forested habitats, so we enjoyed some well forested tracks and some really great birding. Among the major targets and other special birds, we successfully found a stunning male Rose-throated Tanager, pairs of Yucatan Woodpeckers, some busy Northern Bentbills, flocks of Olive-throated Parakeets and White-fronted Amazons, an endearing Ferruginous Pygmy Owl, Rose-throated Becards, Plain Chachalacas, very vocal Melodious Blackirds, Brown and Green Jays, Spot-breasted and White- bellied Wrens, Squirrel Cuckoo, Canivet's Emerald and our first female Grey-throated Chats. -
