Toward quality assurance of the plant, pharmacognostic and phytochemical studies, physicochemical characterization, and healing effects of "Zaroor" were studied. Study Design: Original Research Article. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ *Corresponding author: E-mail: [email protected]; Rameshk et al.; JPRI, 20(6): 1-13, 2017; Article no.JPRI.39090 Place and Duration of Study: The study took place in herbal and traditional medicines research center at Faculty of Pharmacy and stem cell research center at Faculty of Allied Medical Sciences of Kerman, Iran from March 2016 to September 2017. Methodology: Total flavonoid content (TFC) of the plant was measured and high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) fingerprint profiling was planned for qualitative assessment of the plant with reference to rutin as the marker compound. Antioxidant activity was studied using DPPH and FRAP assay. Proliferation and wound healing effect of the plant was evaluated on the primary human dermal fibroblast by neutral red and scratch assay. Results: The pharmacognostic studies and physicochemical characteristics indicated characters, which are of diagnostic value for plant standardization and quality control. HPTLC chromatogram of the plant extract confirmed the presence of rutin in comparison to Rf value of the standard. Maximum inhibition of DPPH radical and IC50 value was estimated at 10000 µg/ml (99.89%) and 2379.82±37.59 µg/ml respectively. In FRAP test, the antioxidant value was estimated 0.29±0.02 mM/mg SO4Fe. Plant extract exhibited no significant effects on cell proliferation in HDF cells after 48 hr treatment using neutral red assay. The greatest reduction in gap width was considered after 48 hr at 1.562- 6.25 µg/ml. This activity was significantly different from untreated cells as a control (p<0.01). Conclusion: N. tazetta would be effective for wound healing through different mechanisms such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect, which needs to be studied in more details. The ​ ​ ​ ​ ​ underground storage organs of bulbs expend their food and water storage to produce the leaves and flowers. It is these underground food and water storage organs that allow these plants to resist drought. Bulbous plant species cycle through vegetative and reproductive growth stages; the bulb grows to flowering size during the vegetative stage and the plant flowers during the reproductive stage. During the wet season, bulbs replenish their resources from soil nutrients and photosynthesis. During the hot, dry season, bulbs go dormant storing their accumulated food supply while showing little to no sign of life above ground. In autumn or spring the plants sprout again to continue the cycle. It is these characteristics which make many bulbous plants suitable for our Mediterranean climate of mild, wet winters and then hot, dry summers. They belong to one of the few plant genera that gardeners in all regions of the United States can grow successfully. This is because from the relatively few species and cultivars that were in our gardens 150 years ago many thousands of named cultivars have arisen, of which large numbers are now available to the horti- cultural trade and to specialist growers and breeders. One of the main factors responsible for the establishment of so many Narcissus cultivars is their habit of growth and the way in which they are propagated. Vegetative propagation is thus the only way to perpetuate each entity in an unchanged state. This is easily achieved in bulbous perennials such as Narcissus through division of the bulb using traditional or more modern methods (micropropa- gation, etc). Consequently, any hybrid of sufficient merit can be des- cribed as a new cultivar very soon after its first flowering, without the necessity for the time-consuming processes of breeding and selection which delay the introduction of cultivars of annual species, sometimes by many years.

The pharmacological investigation showed that Narcissus tazetta antibacterial and antifungal, antiviral, antimalerial, anticancer, antioxidant, dermatological, cardiovascular, immunomodulatory and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory effects. INTRODUCTION: Medicinal plants are the Nature’s gift to human beings to help them pursue a disease-free healthy life. Plants have been used as drugs by humans since thousands of years ago. Two thirds of the new chemicals identified yearly were extracted from higher plants. 75% of the world’s population used plants for therapy and prevention. In the US, where chemical synthesis dominates the pharmaceutical industry, 25% of the pharmaceuticals are based on plant-derived chemicals (1). Plants are a valuable source of a wide range of secondary metabolites, which are used as pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, flavours, fragrances, colours, biopesticides and food additives(2-21).
