Born and raised in East Texas, with stomping grounds all over the world, Mr. Grant is a noted horticulturist, author, conservationist, and bulb expert. With credentials as long as your arm, he holds floriculture and horticulture degrees from Texas A&M University and has served as beloved instructor at Louisiana State and Stephen F. Austin Universities. He is a graduate of the Benz School of Floral Design, member of the Garden Writers Association of American; lifetime member of the Native Plant Society of Texas and of the Southern Garden History Society. Mr. Grant, an avid Rose-Rustler is well-known for introducing dozens of successful Texas hardy plants to the nursery industry. In May Mr. Grant received the prestigious Texas Parks and Wildlife Lone Star Land Steward Award for his efforts in wildlife conservation and the preservation of native habitat in Deep East Texas near his grandparents’ old farm. A gifted and animated speaker, his topics, “Year-Round Bulbs” will cover spring, summer and fall bulbs and their use in the landscape, with particular attention to bulbs featured during the event. NOTES: 4 2017 Bulbs and More TREES_______________________________ Shoal Creek Chaste Tree (Vitex agnus-castus), old-fashioned shrub with light purple flower spikes, vigorous, heat tolerant , full sun, 12’-15’ tall Texas Whitebud (Cercis canadensis), small, deciduous understory tree, grows to 12-18' tall with heart-shaped leaves that open soft pink and turn a glossy, rich green as they mature, In early spring it blooms profusely with white flowers. Redbud ‘Merlot’, a small ornamental tree; bright pink flowers on bare branches; small rounded dark purple leaves the color of Merlot wine Fig, Blue Giant (Ficus caricature 'Blue Giant'), up to 15 feet in height with a 12 foot spread, moist soil and full sun. Houston Minature Weeping Crapemyrtle, a miniature crape myrtle that grows 2 feet tall and two feet wide with watermelon pink blooms, weeping or umbrella type branching and great as a low-growing foundation plant Crapemyrtle ‘Pocomoke’, dwarf; miniature, compact shrub-2’ tall x 3’ wide; deep rose color. Crapemyrtle ‘Ebony Embers’, red hot blooms with showy, dark foliage, highly mildew resistant, full sun, 10’-12’ tall SHRUBS_____________________________ Natchez Blackberry, This semi-erect, thornless variety produces large, sweet berries, summer bearing floricane Blueberry ‘Tifblue’ (Vaccinium virgatum 'Tifblue’), considered by the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Service to be the most outstanding Rabbiteye blueberry, most cold-hardy blueberry in the Rabbiteye family, 6’-8’ ORNAMENTAL GRASS__________________ Pink Muhly Grass (Muhlenbergia capillaries), 3-6 feet in height by 1-3 feet wide, fall blooms with masses of airy vibrant pink flowers, thrives in full sun or part shade with well-drained soil, tolerates drought, heat, and poor soils. Lemon Grass (Cymbopogon spp), 3-4 feet at maturity with arching leaves, great in a mixed perennial border or in a container garden. DAFFODIL GROUP__________________________________________________ Lent Lily - Narcissus pseudonarcissus, very early flowering, 6-8 inches tall, creamy yellow petals and cup, will seed out and naturalize, parent to all modern daffodils. Daffodil – ‘February Gold, pure yellow, with recurved petals, 8-12 inches tall. Daffodil ‘Ice Follies’ creamy white petals with a wide light-yellow cup, multiplies well. Daffodil ‘Carlton’, all yellow with vanilla-like fragrance. Good perennializer, 14-16 in. ‘Jet Fire’, reflexed yellow petals with a bright orange cup, good for forcing, 12-14 inches tall Daffodil ‘Ceylon’, petals with large red/orange cup, 14-16” tall, early bloom, long lasting blooms Narcissus bulbocodium, ‘Hoop Petticoat’, small yellow, megaphone shaped trumpet, insignificant petals Narcissus cantabricus, very rare, white megaphone shaped bloom, long blooming JONQUIL GROUP_______________________________________________________________ 5 Narcissus jonquilla “Sweeties”, clusters of tiny, yellow fragrant blooms. Will seed out and naturalize Narcissus x odorus (Campernelle jonquil), clusters of bright yellow blooms with twisted petals, sterile Narcissus x intermedius (Texas Star Jonquil), fragrant yellow blooms, flowers below foliage, sterile. Narcissus jonquilla ‘Golden Dawn’, clusters of 5-8 rich yellow flowers with orange cups, very heavy flowering, good multiplier, one of last to bloom. Narcissus jonquilla ‘Sweetness’, yellow with yellow cup, 12-14” tall, mid-Season, very fragrant Narcissus jonquilla ‘Pipit, white cup with yellow/white petals, 12-14” tall, multiple blossoms on stem TAZETTA GROUP______________________________________________________________ Narcissus italicus, creamy colored, star shaped petals with a soft yellow cup, blooms mid-January Narcissus tazetta ‘Grand Primo’, mid-February-mid March, large clusters of fragrant white flowers with soft yellow cups Narcissus tazetta ‘Erlicheer’, a double Grand Primo with soft yellow centers Narcissus tazetta ‘Cragford’, clusters of pure white petals with red-orange cups, 14-16 inches tall Narcissus tazetta ‘Sir Winston Churchill’, 3-5 silver dollar sized creamy white flowers with orange flecks, 15-17”, late season bloom OTHER SPRING and SUMMER BLOOMING BULBS____________________________________ Leucojum aestivum (Summer snowflakes) pendulous white bells with green tips. Leucojum aestivum ‘Gravetye Giant’, larger version of Summer Snowflakes. Gladiolus byzantinus (Byzantine Gladiola), hardy gladiolus with bright magenta blooms, circa 1600, very scarce Hyacinthus orientalis (Roman Blue Hyacinth), dusky blue flowers with dark green leaves, extremely fragrant, very rare, hard to find. Ipheion uniflorum , periwinkle blue, star-shaped, fragrant spring blooming flowers with grass-like foliage, small plant, naturalizes Hyacinthoides hispanica ‘Excelsior’ (Spanish Bluebells), clump forming, compact perennial with strap shaped leaves which blooms in late spring, easily grown and naturalizes well in average, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade, This cultivar features deep blue, bell-shaped flowers. Good cut and is deer and rodent resistant Hyacinthoides hispanica ‘White city’ (Spanish bluebells), same as above, this cultivar features snow white, bell- shaped flowers. Scilla peruviana, height 8”-15”, blooms early Spring, full sun to light shade, moderate water, multiplies, good in containers Scilla hyacinthoides, tall spikes of starry lavender flowers arranged in loose racemes below a spear of green and lavender buds Hippeastrum x johnsonii (St. Joseph Lily), Amaryllis with brilliant red trumpet-shaped flowers, spicy fragrance, tough and hardy, Plant with neck of the bulb just above the ground, blooms in early spring SUMMER BLOOMING BULBS___________________________________________________ Hemerocallis fulva ‘Kwansa’, Orange daylily, commonly called Ditch Lily, can be single or double. 6 Amorphophallus bulbifera (Voodoo Lily), a 3-4 foot version of an exotic tropical in the Arum family.
