What about her actions when the raiders were present – were her actions appropriate then? Chapter 2 History – during the 19th Century, there were distinct “spheres of influence” for men and women. A man provided for his family by growing food, running a business, or working at a trade. -

In order to keep the Church Records current, Janet & Norman C. Young were retained to update the more recent appointments and make necessary corrections as new information became available. Since their death, Naomi Horner has graciously volunteered to continue updating the volume. New information comes from the readers making corrections and suggestions. New information also comes from Naomi’s continued research on the companion volume Pastoral Records. The Western Pennsylvania Commission on Archives & History decided to make this revision and update available on these webpages www.wpaumc.org0H so that the most current information remains accessible and for corrections to continue to refine the document. This volume has had long history of Revision. Described by Herbert E. Boyd in his 1957 volume on the Erie Methodist Preface as a “compendium…intended primarily as an administrative tool.” He then credits forerunners back to 1898. At that time, this primarily contained Pastoral Records. Grafton T. Reynolds edited for the Pittsburgh Methodist Episcopal Church a similar volume through 1927. W. Guy Smeltzer divided his 1969 revision between chapters on Pastoral Records and Church Records. -

Not only does it signify that I have completed my project but also that I have not traveled the weary path toward completion alone. While I certainly enjoy the pursuit of knowledge and find great pleasure in composing the narrative of history, I admittedly much prefer the opportunity to shine the light of appreciation on those people who have helped me through the difficult process. Granted, I will likely forget someone, and to him or her, I extend my deepest apologies Now, allow me thank the people who have helped me in what has been the most arduous journey of my academic career up to this point. First and foremost, I must thank my academic advisor, Dr. Steven E. Woodworth. He has been both a benevolent taskmaster and a generous friend. While our lunch-table conversations often diverged from the topic of history and led us into arguably more interesting and certainly more important areas of discussion, we always managed to find our way back to the task at hand. I could not have asked for a better mentor, and while I had the opportunity to go elsewhere, I know that I made the correct decision in choosing to study at Texas Christian University. -

Nicholson—needs conservation—active GAR 5. Marble bust Major Adolph Rosengarten—family established what became Merck 6. GAR delegate badges all periods. GAR ended with the death of the last GAR member legacy today is in the Sons of.. 7. Framed Mourning tassel from Gen Grant’s cortege 84.357 8. Shell in a tree from the Battle of Chickamaugua. There are several similar to this one, were used as GAR post decorative features. 9. Post #2 Whiskey Flask 84.038 10. 2 sculptures by John Rogers Wounded Scout (white scout and black man holding up tired scout) and Union Refugees( man, woman, and child). Rogers produced these pieces about 25 yrs after CW ended when interest still high and modestly priced, emotionally evocative themes such as these resonated with many people. Persephone in the River Phlegethon; or, the Women at Gettysburg By Brenda Ayres Presented at the Liberty University 12 th Annual Civil War Seminar Gettysburg March 289, 2008 The heroine in my paper is Persephone. In Greek mythology, the story of Persephone (per séffenee) is a fable that attempts to explain why the earth experiences winter. The myth goes like this. Zeus (the king of the gods who ruled from Mount Olympus) fell in love with Demeter (dih- MEE-tur) or Mother-Earth, or the goddess of grain and fertility, also the goddess that preserves marriage and sacred law. From their union came Persephone. As her daughter grew up, Demeter protected her from the lust and influence of other gods, and thus she developed into a beautiful, unspoiled, and fresh young lady, the very embodiment of spring. -

A Tour of Gettysburg's Visual Battle aD mage Abstract A little-known aspect of the Battle of Gettysburg is the story behind the Civil War battle ad mage still present m some of the town's buildings. During the first three days of July 1863, cannons fired over and into Gettysburg, and as a result some of the homes were inadvertently struck by the shells. As a battlefield guide, the author has driven by these structures everyday for the past few years, and a highlight of any tour is a stop in front of the Sheads house on Buford Avenue, where one can point up to an artillery shell embedded just to the left of its tta ic window. The loud eO hs and Aahs that emanate from visitors are more than ample evidence of the fascination experienced when coming face to face with battle ad mage caused more than 130 years earlier. -

Research Proposal for Gettysburg Citizens’ Accounts of the Battle of Gettysburg Christian Dakota Kibler 16SP HIST 301 Historiography and Research Meth (02) Professor Sarah Jones March 5, 2016 Hypothesis: During the Battle of Gettysburg, the citizens of Gettysburg exhibited varying degrees of fear and apprehension about the battle, but just as importantly they also shared unified attempts to aid and show friendliness to both Union and Confederate military forces. Discussion of Sources: The overall research topic that I have decided to analyze is the evaluation of what the citizens of Gettysburg’s reactions, opinions, and thoughts were regarding the 1863 Civil War Battle of Gettysburg. In conjunction with the Battle of Vicksburg, the Battle of Gettysburg is widely considered amongst expert historians to have been one of the two major battles which marked the turning point of the Civil War, tipping the scales in favor of the Union. There is a enormous wealth of both general and specific historic information available on this battle, and additionally there are innumerable accessible sources which list personal accounts of both Confederate and Union soldiers who fought in the battle. However, there is an extremely limited amount of information available which discusses how the citizens of Gettysburg felt or reacted to the epic landmark battle that took place right outside of their front doors. Therefore, I have chosen to narrow my focus on this lack of information, restricting myself to purely Gettysburg civilian accounts and examinations of the Battle of Gettysburg and its associated aspects. Discarding military accounts and broad, well-known knowledge of the battle, my intent is to explore only what the citizens of Gettysburg noted privately or publicly about the battle, how these citizens were or were not involved in the battle, and how the battle affected Gettysburg citizens’ lives and emotions as the battle raged on for three whole days. -

Hopefully it will enrich your studies of the Civil War, providing your students with insights on the effect of this war (and all wars) on civilian populations. Targeted at students in grades 5 through 8, this program includes pre-visit preparation in the classroom, an on-site, two-hour program conducted by a park ranger, and post-visit follow-up. These lessons were designed to coordinate with the Pennsylvania Department of Education Academic Standards for History, with special attention to the four major descriptors used in each chronological category: Human Impact; Historical Evidence; Continuity and Change; and Conflict and Compromise. They address the following standards, to be achieved by Grade 9: 8.1 Historical Analysis and Skills Development • Analyze chronological thinking (time lines, continuity and change, context for events); • Analyze and interpret historical comprehension (visual data presented in historical evidence); • Analyze and interpret historical research (primary and secondary sources, conclusions). 8.2 Pennsylvania History • Interpret and analyze the interaction of cultural, economic, geographical, political and social relations in Pennsylvania history from 1860 to 1875. - Identify and analyze the importance of historical evidence (including historic places, such as Gettysburg); - Analyze continuity and change in Pennsylvania (including settlement patterns, impact of wars); - Analyze conflict and cooperation impacting Pennsylvania (including military conflict). -
