Giving a short, two-minute speech at the dedication of the unfinished Soldiers’ National Cemetery, the President changed how Americans viewed the American Civil War, and helped transform Gettysburg from a battleground into a national icon. Richard Segars Hundreds of thousands of people pass through the Borough of Gettysburg each year, perhaps as part of a battlefield tour or just as part of a through trip to somewhere else. Few of them stop to spend time in the Borough to appreciate its history and special qualities. The purpose of this plan is to help those who visit Gettysburg understand and appreciate its history and resources by telling the story of Gettysburg and its people, of their lives during the Civil War and of their role in the Battle of Gettysburg and its commemoration. In doing so, the plan will help conserve the Borough’s historic resources and bolster the economic health of the town. 2 Interpretive Plan Borough of Gettysburg “Yes, history is far more than the excitement of battle, the flags and guns and desperate assaults. Gettysburg was a thriving county seat of English, German, Irish and African Americans of various religious, economic and cultural backgrounds at the beginning of the Civil War. Like other communities across the nation, it exhibited the political, social and economic conditions typical of the period. However, in July 1863, the town found itself at the center of the largest battle ever to take place on the continent. The residents endured several days of Confederate occupation, and then were left with the monumental task of caring for thousands of wounded and burying the dead.     "...Our Position Was Finely Adapted To Its Use...” The Guns of Cemetery Hill Bert H. Barnett During the late afternoon of July 1, 1863, retiring Federals of the battered 1st and 11th corps withdrew south through Gettysburg toward Cemetery Hill and began to steady themselves upon it. Following the difficult experiences of the first day of battle, many officers and men were looking to that solid piece of ground, seeking all available advantages. A number of factors made this location attractive. Chief among them was a broad, fairly flat crest that rose approximately eighty feet above the center of Gettysburg, which lay roughly three-quarters of a mile to the north. Cemetery Hill commanded the approaches to the town from the south, and the town in turn served as a defensive bulwark against organized attack from that quarter. To the west and southwest of the hill, gradually descending open slopes were capable of being swept by artillery fire. The easterly side of the hill was slightly lower in height than the primary crest. Extending north of the Baltimore pike, it possessed a steeper slope that overlooked low ground, cleared fields, and a small stream. Field guns placed on this position would also permit an effective defense. It was clear that this new position possessed outstanding features. General Oliver Otis Howard, commanding the Union 11th Corps, pronounced it “the only tenable position” for the army.1 As the shadows began to lengthen on July 1, it became apparent that Federal occupation of the hill was not going to be challenged in any significant manner this day.

The renovation by Morgan-Keller Construction written about here won a first-place national prize for historic reno- vation. ❦ When Dwight Pryor was married in the chapel of the historic Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 1993, he never imagined that he would revisit the school in charge of the delicate job of expertly restoring its oldest, most revered building. Constructed in 1831-32 for $10,500 and named for the Seminary's first president, Schmucker Hall was first used for all of the Seminary's functions, then as a student dormitory as the school con- structed other buildings. The first engagement of the Civil War Battle of Gettysburg was fought on Seminary Ridge in and around Schmucker Hall which was commandeered by both armies as a hospital where thousands of casualties were treated and a few precious artifacts were left be- hind. The seven-level stone-and-brick landmark comprises four stories, basement, attic and cu- pola. The Seminary itself made civil rights history from its founding, through the Civil War and beyond. The Seminary's barn, no longer extant, is among the three to four percent of today's claimed Underground Railroad sites having conclusive documentation of involvement in the dangerous, illegal, clandestine moral network which shepherded tens of thousands of freedom seekers to northern states and Canada. The Seminary's role in abolitionism was early, active, bold and, more than once, punished.

Pula Daybreak on July 2, 1863, found the survivors of the Eleventh Corps clinging to the ground on and around Cemetery Hill. Badly bruised on the previous day when Confederates overwhelmed the First and Eleventh Corps and drove them through town to their new refuge on the high ground southeast of the village, their position stretched from roughly Ziegler’s Grove north along the Taneytown Road to a point near the junction of the Emmitsburg Road. From there it turned right to the junction of Baltimore Street, then angled back along the northern base of Cemetery Hill. Gen. Adolf von Steinwehr’s division held the Taneytown and Emmitsburg Road portions of the line. Where it bent east, Gen. Adelbert Ames’s division took over with Col. Andrew Harris’s brigade formed at the base of Cemetery Hill, the right being extended by Col. Leopold von Gilsa’s brigade. Lacking enough troops to fi ll the space, the 33rd Massachusetts was detached from another division to anchor the right fl ank between von Gilsa and the slope up to Culp’s Hill held by a portion of the First Corps.

Civil War Essentials - Henry Sibley – Confederate General and Inventor One of the lesser Confederate leaders, whose Civil War experience has been largely forgotten, also developed several pre-war inventions to improve the life of the American soldier in the mid-Nineteenth Century. Henry Hopkins Sibley is best remembered for a type of tent still available today. Sibley was born in 1816 in Mississippi but moved to live with an uncle in Missouri after his father died.

    NOR LONG REMEMBER: LINCOLN AT GETTYSBURG By HERBERT L. CARSON* N THIS centennial year of the Civil War, we Americans pause to consider that terrible conflict and its results. One of the most decisive battles of the war resulted in a Union victory at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Probably the most famous words spoken during the war were those with which Abraham Lincoln dedicated the cemetery at Gettysburg. Let us pause a moment to remember the circumstances of that momentous day and the simple greatness of the man and of his brief speech. July 4, 1863, was unlike any other Independence Day. It was the eighty-seventh anniversary of independence for the Union, and it was also the day which saw halted the powerful advance of Robert E. Lee's troops into northern territory. After three days of bitter fighting at Gettysburg, the Confederate forces were in retreat. The battle had cost both sides a total of approximately 53,000 men (including those killed, wounded, or taken prisoner), with the toil falling most heavily upon the South. After Gettysburg, the North never again had to fear a Confederate invasion. The fortunes of war, hereafter, were with the Union. Because of the necessities of the battle, neither side had had time to give its dead proper burial. Many corpses still were ex- posed on the ridges and in the valleys where they had fallen dur- ing the fighting. Some dead who had been given a hasty burial were later disinterred by ploughing farmers. The earth over many of the bodies was not sufficient to cover them completely.
