his article is dedicated to all our Christian friends celebrating Christmas - Merry Christmas and a TNew Year filled with love and peace! This happy occasion is not confined to Christians only - many Muslims share with their Christian friends the joy of this occasion because they remember that these Christians exchange greetings and congratulations with them on Islamic occasions. Joy is a universal sentiment and there’s no embarrassment or shame in it. After Christmas celebrations, we are approaching a new year. This occasion also makes us remember what we lack to complete our happiness, whether money, children, success or marriage. It is wishful thinking, but happy occasions are very few in the turbulent, volatile and wor- risome world of today. I believe social media has become a partner on these occasions and not only a transmitter. These days, social media is a yard through which any individual can express their opinion and present congratulations and wishes for various holidays and events, and this is clear on Twitter. For example, Egyptian newspaper Al-Dustour posted Christmas and New Year wishes with a hashtag on Twitter from various people. The diversity of wishes by Twitter users were funny, reflecting simple human wishes. ave you tried to count the number of times you skipped an ad on Snapchat, Instagram, or Facebook? HYou often feel weary when the ads get repetitive, and resort to the magical “hide this ad” button. It seems digital advertising on social media platforms has reached a point of saturation. Online advertising has proliferated due to the ease of the process and cheaper costs, but this could be counterproductive. Apparently, due to the large number of advertisements, it’s difficult to reach the target segments. Some ad campaigns have begun combining their digital with real life campaigns, especially those targeting the youth. Interesting and creatively new graffiti and posters can be found where the youth like to mingle and hang out, like Mayar Complex, Shuwaikh Market, Lilly Center, Seef restaurants area and Mubarak Al-Kabeer Street. Some of these commercial campaigns may seem like social and po- litical commentaries, while others are based on graphic de- sign and photography. Yet, they are all directing passersby, aka the target audience, to their social media accounts. The use of posters and graffiti is not new to the Kuwaiti culture. These have been used to stir public opinion by en- thusiastic individuals. But for some reason, individual efforts are virtually non- existent in the light of the emergence of commercial posters and graffiti work. Therefore, it’s early to say that there is a growing poster culture in Kuwait. Graphic and poster designer Tala Al-Maian said there has been a growth in the graffiti movement in Kuwait in the past few years, along with social acceptance of it. “I believe in the next three years, we will see more posters on walls than graffiti because they’re simple and easy to print. You can call it the cheap people’s art!” Friday 5

n the heart of old Lisbon, there’s a “hospi- tal” that treats patients who are small and Ifragile, often mangled and battered, and sometimes more than 100 years old. This rare facility mends the cracked head, broken limb or missing eye of many a child’s favorite toy- their doll. The loving care given at Lisbon’s doll hospital has been going on for five genera- tions. “We have clients from all over the world and all ages. There are museums which ask us to restore pieces, also private collectors, but the vast majority of our clients are individuals- people who are sentimentally attached” to their dolls, says Manuela Cutileiro, 72, the hos- pital’s owner. The dolls all have a patient file and are painstakingly restored by the skilled hands of three women “surgeons”, who give them a new body part or hair, chosen from drawers full of pieces of dolls, a macabre collection of heads, limbs and eyes. The establishment, known as Hospital de Bonecas, was founded in 1830 and is described in the tourist guides to Portugal’s capital as one of the oldest doll hospitals still in operation. Drawers with different doll parts at the Doll Hospital. “They say we are among the last in the world to do this work,” says Cutileiro, a for- mer school teacher. But she shrugs off acco- lades. “We do our work in our little corner, without worrying about records or statistics.” Dolls are displayed at the Doll Hospital. Some 4,000 dolls can be found inside. There are 100-year-old dolls with porcelain heads, along with dolls dressed in costumes from dif- ferent regions of Portugal, as well as some modern Barbies. “For us a contemporary doll is 20 or 30 years old. The old ones are those which are al- ready centenarians,” says Cutileiro, carrying on the family enterprise. Its origins go back to the 19th century when “a little old lady”, Car- lota da Silva Luz, would make rag dolls, sitting in front of her herb shop in Praca da Figueira, where there was a large outdoor market. Over time, the aromatic and medicinal herbs gave way to shelves of dolls, which today fill a win- dow display at the entrance to the hospital, with a museum dedicated to them on the first A picture shows doll hands inside a drawer floor.
