While the economic and security dimensions of Turkey’s role in the region have been amply addressed, its cross-border ties with societies in the Caucasus remain under-researched. This issue of the Cauca- sus Analytical Digest illustrates inter-societal relations between Turkey and the three South Caucasus states of Arme- nia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, as well as with the de-facto state of Abkhazia, through the prism of NGO and diaspora contacts. Although this approach is by necessity selective, each of the four articles describes an important segment of transboundary societal relations between Turkey and the Caucasus. -

The Outcome of the Second Karabakh War: Confrontation Between the Diaspora and the Armenian Government
APRIL-2021 ANALYSIS THE OUTCOME OF THE SECOND KARABAKH WAR: CONFRONTATION BETWEEN THE DIASPORA AND THE ARMENIAN GOVERNMENT The trilateral agreement signed by the heads of state of Azerbaijan, Russia and Armenia on November 10, 2020 caused a growing discontent both among the citizens of Armenia and among representatives of the diaspora. The Armenian people were divided into several camps: those accusing the West of inaction; those accusing Russia of betrayal; and, finally, those accusing the current government of both betrayal and unpreparedness for military action. It should be noted that diaspora organizations did not openly criticize Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan in their statements at first, blaming Azerbaijan and its ally Turkey for everything. One of the first to speak out against the current administration was the Union of Armenians of Russia (UAR), led by its chairman Ara Abramyan. The situation was further aggravated by the spread of unfounded information about the government misappropriating the funds raised by the Hayastan Foundation during the war. As a result, representatives of the diaspora began to demand the resignation of the present administration. As noted above, one of the first large diaspora organizations to blame the current Armenian government was the Union of Armenians of Russia. Immediately after the signing of said agreement, the UAR held an online meeting of 50 heads of its regional offices, led by its chairman A. Abramyan[1], and on November 11, the organization issued a statement on behalf of the chairman, accusing Prime Minister Pashinyan of “incapacity and inability to run the country effectively.”[2] Russian businessman of Armenian origin Samvel Karapetyan, as well as entrepreneurs Artak Tovmasyan and Ruben Vardanyan, also joined these appeals. -

India- Armenia Bilateral Relations Background India recognized the independent Republic of Armenia on December 26, 1991, and India's Ambassador in Moscow was concurrently accredited to Armenia. From September 1992, India's Ambassador in Kiev (Ukraine) was given the concurrent charge of Armenia. India opened its Resident Mission in Yerevan at the level of Charge d' Affaires on 01 March 1999; the first Resident Ambassador Shri Bal Anand assumed charge in Yerevan in October 1999. Armenia, which had opened its Honorary Consulate in April 1994, established its Embassy in New Delhi in October 1999 at the level of Charge d' Affaires, followed by the arrival of the first Resident Ambassador Armen Baibourtian in May 2000. Historical background: Historians have suggested that when Assyrian warrior queen Semiramis invaded India in 2000 BC, some Armenians accompanied her as they probably did Alexander the Great in 326 BC. According to literary evidence, there were Indian settlements in Armenia established by two Indian Princes (Krishna and Ganesh escaping from Kannauj) who along with their families and large retinue had arrived in Armenia as early as 149 BC and were allotted land in Taron region (now in Turkey) by the then rulers of Armenia. Thomas Cana is said to be the first Armenian to have landed on the Malabar Coast in 780 AD. The first guidebook to Indian cities in Armenian was written in the 12th century. By middle ages, the Armenian towns of Artashat, Metsbin and Dvin had become important centers for barter with India which exported precious stones, herbs and stones to Armenia and imported hides and dyes. -

In the West it borders with Turkey, in the North it borders with Georgia, in the East – RA Lori marz and in the South – RA Aragatsotn marz. Territory 2681 square km. Territory share of the marz in the territory of RA 9 % Urban communities 3 Rural communities 116 Towns 3 Villages 128 Population number as of January 1, 2006 281.4 ths. persons including urban 171.4 ths. persons rural 110.0 ths. persons Share of urban population size 60.9 % Share of marz population size in RA population size, 2005 39.1 % Agricultural land 165737 ha including - arable land 84530 ha Being at the height of 1500-2000 m above sea level (52 villages of the marz are at the height of 1500-1700 m above sea level and 55 villages - 2000 m), the marz is the coldest region 0 of Armenia, where the air temperature sometimes reaches -46 C in winter. The main railway and automobile highway connecting Armenia with Georgia pass through the marz territory. The railway and motor-road networks of Armenia and Turkey are connected here. On the Akhuryan river frontier with Turkey the Akhuryan reservoir was built that is the biggest in the country by its volume of 526 mln. m3. Marzes of the Republic of Armenia in figures, 1998-2002 252 The leading branches of industry of RA Shirak marz are production of food, including beverages and production of other non-metal mineral products. -

PERCEPTIONS OF NATIONAL SECURITY IN ARMENIA ѳñóÙ³Ý ³ñ¹ÛáõÝùÝ»ñ Yerevan June 2 2015 ºñ&³Ý Ù³ÛÇëÇ 27 2015Ã. Background In the last two years, Armenia has undertaken a major foreign policy step by signing up to the Eurasian Economic Union, and by not pursuing the Association Agreement with the European Union. The Armenian authorities explained its decisions by ‘security’ reasons. The findings of the Civilitas Foundation’s previous poll in June 2014 indicate that public justifications for joining the Customs Union (later, the Eurasian Economic Union) were more linked to ‘security reasons’ than to economic factors, similar to the justifications of the Armenian authorities. Still the question that remains is, to what extent does the public perception of the concept of ‘security’ or ‘national security’ match the conceptual framework of ‘national security’ inscribed by the Armenian government in its “Strategy on National Security”? This leads to the next question: To what extent do public expectations of national security match the current policy of deploying foreign military bases in Armenia? There is need to identify not only the public’s tolerance level against a particular country’s military units’ presence in Armenia, but tolerance against the presence of foreign military units in general. In this regard, it is worth surveying the conditions under which the Armenian public agrees to provide its territory to foreign military units and whether the conditions for providing territory match their own definition of ensuring ‘national security.’ Objectives of the Poll In order to study the above-mentioned questions, the Civilitas Foundation conducted a public telephone poll with 600 residents of Armenia, randomly selected from all the marzes (regions) of the country and Yerevan. -

Ttenut Ttenut is one of the businesses established on the Legends Trail in Karahunj, Goris. It offers a camping zone, food, mulberry workshops, and other services. Shahnazar Adventure Campsite The Shahnazar Adventure Campsite is situated in Hartashen, close to Goris, and offers hiking, camping, horseback riding, fishing, birdwatching, bonfires, and tours to abandoned villages nearby. Khustup Guest House The Khustup Guest House, based along the Legends Trail in Verin Vachagan, is a bed and breakfast offering a variety of adventure tours in the Kapan area. PEOPLE IN NEED ARMENIA Legends Trail E-bikes in Tandzaver Pegasus Tandzaver provides bike rentals, as well as electric and mountain bike tours to Tatev and to the settlements around Tatev. Restoration of the Legends Trail Our crew is working hard on the restoration of the Legends Trail. Thanks to our collaboration with the NGO Trails For Change and the Transcaucasian Trail, it will soon be easier to navigate the beautiful segment between Khndzoresk and Khustup. Hosting Travel Bloggers on the Legends Trail Travel bloggers Aram and Megan of Absolute Armenia recently explored the Legends Trail. They stayed at camping zones along the trail, and visited a number of the locations and businesses funded as part of the EU4Tourism project. -
