Current address: ICF International, 405 W Boxelder Rd Suite A5, Gillette, WY 82718, [email protected] INTRODUCTION The Rusty Blackbird (Euphagus carolinus) suffers from a case of mistaken identity. Rusty Blackbirds, or “rusties,” are so named after their autumn plumage, when their glossy black feathers are edged with a soft brown color—something Adirondackers might only see during the birds’ fall migration through the North Country or on wintertime travels through the southeastern US. Rusties are yellow-eyed blackbirds easily confused with other Icterids such as Red-winged Blackbirds (Agelaius phoeniceus) or Common Grackles (Quiscalus quiscula). Rusty Blackbirds seldom stand out in a crowd, as they often flock with other blackbird species. Yet the Rusty Blackbird is one of the sentinel species of the continent’s boreal ecosystems, and recent efforts to determine the bird’s status in New York State have resulted in serious cause for concern. Our objective is to share the collective knowledge gained from over a decade of studying this cryptic northern bird in the Adirondacks, to include what is known about breeding Rusty Blackbird populations in similar regions, and to explore a possible future for the species in New York. -

Luke George, Committee Chair Dr. Mark Colwell, Committee Member Dr. Susan Sharbaugh, Committee Member Dr. Rob Van Kirk, Graduate Coordinator May 2013 ABSTRACT THE MATING SYSTEM AND SOCIAL BEHAVIOR OF RUSTY BLACKBIRDS ON YUKON FLATS NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE April Harding Scurr Many aspects of the breeding biology of the rapidly declining Rusty Blackbird (Euphagus carolinus) are unknown. I used behavioral observations and genetic analyses to gain a better understanding of their mating system, on Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska, USA. Four polymorphic microsatellites developed for other avian species (QmAAT21, QmAAT37, Aph54, and Mp2-43) were used to assess rates of extra- pair paternity, polyandry, and egg dumping. Behavioral observations were employed to identify the social mating system and parental nest investment in relation to genetic contributions. In contrast to previous studies, my results indicate that male Rusty Blackbirds are not socially monogamous; over 15% of nests belonged to polygynous males. There was no evidence of polyandry or egg dumping, but extra-pair paternity (EPP) occurred in ≥ 33% of nests. There was no correlation between the proportion of young that a male sired in a nest and either feeding rate or nest defense. Further studies are needed to investigate the role of environmental and social factors on mating systems and the rates of polygamy and EPP in Rusty Blackbirds. -

Vegetation variables were sampled on 4 sites that differed in agricultural management: (1) ‘‘Crop’’ site, a combination of annual crops and seeded pastures; (2) ‘‘Pasture’’ site, seeded pastures only; (3) ‘‘Native 1’’ site, natural grasslands under sheep and cattle grazing; and (4) ‘‘Native 2’’ site, natural grasslands grazed by native Pampas deer (Ozotoceros bezoarticus) and cattle. -

Many migrants are in steep decline, and understanding their behavior within and among migrations is crucial for developing effective conservation strategies across the full annual cycle. One of the most rapidly declining songbirds in North America is the Rusty Blackbird (Euphagus carolinus; 85–95% decline over the past 50 yr), and stopover ecology is a major gap in our knowledge of its annual cycle. We utilized an automated telemetry array in western Lake Erie and the Motus Wildlife Tracking System to track landscape-scale movements, stopover duration, departure behavior, and between-season site fidelity in this species. We found that stopover duration during both fall and spring was nearly 1 mo (mean¼25.5 days)—exceptionally long for a passerine. During spring, birds in both poor condition and high degree of molt had longer stopovers, post-departure flights were relatively long for a songbird, and tailwinds predicted departure in both seasons. -

The form that occurs in the NACC area is nominate pacificus, so the current species account would remain unchanged except for the distributional statement and notes. Background: The Fork-tailed Swift Apus pacificus was until recently (e.g., Chantler 1999, 2000) considered to consist of four subspecies: pacificus, kanoi, cooki, and leuconyx. Nominate pacificus is highly migratory, breeding from Siberia south to northern China and Japan, and wintering in Australia, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The other subspecies are either residents or short distance migrants: kanoi, which breeds from Taiwan west to SE Tibet and appears to winter as far south as southeast Asia. -

The Red-breasted Blackbird S. militaris is recorded for the rst time along the Colom- bian Amazon, where it probably arrived in the 1990’s following the establishment of cattle raising in the area. We report the Peruvian Meadowlark (S. bellicosa) for the rst time from Colombia, from the Tumaco area of Nariño, and present observations on its behavior. We also report two specimens of this species from the same area taken 35 years ago, suggesting that this range extension is not recent but has been overlooked. Key words: Colombia, distribution, meadowlarks, new records, Sturnella bellicosa, Sturnella militaris. RESUMEN Presentamos nuevos registros de distribución para dos especies “pechorrojas” del género Sturnella, aves de pastizales abiertos, en Colombia. Se informa de los primeros registros de S. militaris a lo largo del Río Amazo- nas en Colombia, donde aparentemente llegó después del establecimiento de la ganadería extensiva en la zona en la década de los 90. -

Southern Belize: Birding & Nature | Species List February 20 ‒ 28, 2019 | Written by Bob Meinke Guide Bob Meinke, with expert local lodge naturalists Marvin and Steven, and 9 participants: Kelly, Isaac, Lenore, Harold, Cindy, Richelle, Beth, Nancy, and Joe SUMMARY We enjoyed a scenic and productive trip, starting with the vast freshwater wetlands at Crooked Tree Lagoon, transitioning on to the montane woodlands of the Mountain Pine Ridge, and ending our tour in the broadleaf forests and mangroves of Toledo District at the southern tip of Belize. Working our way down the length of the country increased our exposure to a wide range of habitats, and with it came a nice assortment of resident and migrant bird species as well as other wildlife. Highlights among the resident species included King Vulture, Bare-crowned Antbird, Black-and-white Owl, Yucatan Jay, White-winged Becard, Ruddy Woodcreeper, Eye-ringed Flatbill, Violet Sabrewing, three species of Trogon, and five species of Kingfisher (with multiple, close-in views of American Pygmy a surprising bonus). And while not unexpected, Keel-billed Toucan, Collared Aracari, Bare-throated Tiger Heron, Montezuma Oropendola, Golden -headed Tanager, Barred Antshrike, and Squirrel Cuckoo were all exquisite reminders of the rich colors and morphological diversity that characterize the avifauna of the Neotropics. North American migrants were also plentiful during our visit, and among the many warblers encountered, Blue-winged, Worm-eating, and Prothonotary stood out among the 21 overwintering species we recorded, most of which were just entering full breeding plumage as they readied for their journey north to the U.S.
