Introduction The Library’s Civil War collection is extensive. We have letters, diaries, personal memoirs, biographies, histories of specific campaigns and battles, histories of how various populations (women, ethnicities, religions, occupations) participated in the war. There are too many books to list here. This list focuses on sources that identify individual soldiers.

The Library owns many muster rolls and regimental histories for states other than New York. We have made every effort to list them all here but we cannot guarantee that this guide is 100% comprehensive.

Our following two guides cover the material that is omitted here:

Civil War Genealogy & History for Buffalo & Erie County Civil War Genealogy & History for New York State

Most of the titles listed below are in storage. Staff will be happy to retrieve them. It takes only about 10 minutes. Most of these items are non-circulating and cannot be borrowed. Shelf locations are always subject to change and items do go missing.

To find Civil War books that can be borrowed, visit the Information Services & Outreach Department.

Bibliographies These titles will help you find existing Civil War regimental histories beyond the ones that we own.
