In the Year 710 in the Iberian Peninsula, Rodrigo Came to the Throne of the Visigothic Kingdom After Killing the Previous King
2º E In the year 710 in the Iberian Peninsula, Rodrigo came to the throne of the Visigothic Kingdom after killing the previous King. A group of nobles decided to called the muslims for military help to depose Rodrigo. The emir of North Africa, Musa, sent an army of berbers led by Tariq. Then Rodrigo with his own army went to confront the muslims in the Battle of Guadalete. During the battle, some visigothic nobles betrayed Rodrigo and left the battle; because of that Rodrigo died and his army was defeated. After the battle, the muslims continue conquering the Iberian Peninsula, with the help of a powerful army led by the Emir Musa. They reached Toledo and in less than three years they controlled almost the whole of the Iberian Peninsula, except the mountainous areas in the north west. There the muslims found resistance and they fought against the astures, led by Pelayo, in the battle of Covadonga (722). The muslim army was defeated and expelled from the region. The muslims left the zone and advanced to the north, crossing the Pyrinees, but they had to return after being expelled by the Franks (Battle of Poitiers, 732). After that, they returned to the Iberian Peninsula and started to organize their new territories. 2º C In the year 710, the Visigothic Kingdom was suffering a civil war. Paschasius Radbertus and the Song of Songs
chapter 6 “Love’s Lament”: Paschasius Radbertus and the Song of Songs The Song of Songs was understood by many Carolingian exegetes as the great- est, highest, and most obscure of Solomon’s three books of wisdom. But these Carolingian exegetes would also have understood the Song as a dialogue, a sung exchange between Christ and his church: in fact, as the quintessential spiritual song. Like the liturgy of the Eucharist and the divine office, the Song of Songs would have served as a window into heavenly realities, offering glimpses of a triumphant, spotless Bride and a resurrected, glorified Bridegroom that ninth- century reformers’ grim views of the church in their day would have found all the more tantalizing. For Paschasius Radbertus, abbot of the great Carolingian monastery of Corbie and as warm and passionate a personality as Alcuin, the Song became more than simply a treasury of imagery. In this chapter, I will be examining Paschasius’s use of the Song of Songs throughout his body of work. Although this is necessarily only a preliminary effort in understanding many of the underlying themes at work in Paschasius’s biblical exegesis, I argue that the Song of Songs played a central, formative role in his exegetical imagina- tion and a structural role in many of his major exegetical works. If Paschasius wrote a Song commentary, it has not survived; nevertheless, the Song of Songs is ubiquitous in the rest of his exegesis, and I would suggest that Paschasius’s love for the Song and its rich imagery formed a prism through which the rest of his work was refracted. -

"Years of Struggle": The Irish in the Village of Northfield, 1845-1900* By GENE SESSIONS Most Irish immigrants to the United States in the nineteenth century settled in cities, and for that reason historians have focused on their experience in an urban-industrial setting. 1 Those who made their way to America's towns and villages have drawn less attention. A study of the settling-in process of nineteenth century Irish immigrants in the village of Northfield, Vermont, suggests their experience was similar, in im portant ways, to that of their urban counterparts. Yet the differences were significant, too, shaped not only by the particular characteristics of Northfield but also by adjustments within the Irish community itself. In the balance the Irish changed Northfield forever. The Irish who came into Vermont and Northfield in the nineteenth century were a fraction of the migration of nearly five million who left Ireland between 1845 and 1900. Most of those congregated in the cities along the eastern seaboard of the United States. Others headed inland by riverboats and rail lines to participate in settling the cities of the west. Those who traveled to Vermont were the first sizable group of non-English immigrants to enter the Green Mountain state. The period of their greatest influx was the late 1840s and 1850s, and they continued to arrive in declining numbers through the end of the century. -

MARIBEL FIERRO Hostages and the Dangers of Cultural Contact: Two Cases from Umayyad Cordoba* Hostages are captives of a peculiar sort. Rather than having been captured during war, they are in the hands of the enemy as free persons who have temporarily lost their freedom, either because they were given and kept as a pledge (for example, for the fulfilment of a treaty) or in order to act as a substitute for someone who has been taken prisoner1. The prisoner, usually an important person, can regain his or her freedom under certain conditions, usually by the payment of a ransom. When those conditions are fulfilled, the hostage is released. In the medieval period, the taking of hostages was linked to conquest, the establishment of treaties, and the submission of rebels. The Spanish word for »hostage« (rehén, pl. rehenes) derives from the Arabic root r.h.n (which produces, in Classical Arabic, rāhin, pl. rahāʾin)2, and this origin attests to the fact that the practice of taking hostages was widespread in medieval Iberia and more generally in the Mediterranean3. The Muslims had not, however, invented it4. ORDENANZA FISCAL Nº 14 AYUNTAMIENTO DE NAVA ASTURIAS HACIENDA MUNICIPAL IMPUESTO SOBRE BIENES INMUEBLES Art.1.-Utilizando la facultad contenida en el artículo 72 del Real Decreto Legislativo 2/2004, que aprueba el Texto Refundido de la Ley Reguladora de las Haciendas Locales, el tipo de gravamen del Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles aplicable en este Municipio queda fijado en los términos que se establecen en el artículo siguiente. Art.2.-1-El tipo de gravamen del Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles aplicable a los bienes de naturaleza urbana queda fijado en el 0,52 %. 2-El tipo de gravamen del Impuesto sobre Bienes Inmuebles aplicable a los bienes de naturaleza rústica, queda fijado en el 0,52 %. Art. 3.- En aplicación de lo dispuesto en el artículo 62 del TRLRHL, se establece una exención para los bienes inmuebles cuando la cuota líquida por contribuyente relativa a la totalidad de las parcelas de su titularidad, no supere los límites siguientes: - Bienes de naturaleza urbana: 3´79 €. - Bienes de naturaleza rústica: 9´02 €. Art 4.- Bonificación potestativa por sistema especial de pago (fraccionamiento). 1. Con el objeto de facilitar el cumplimiento de la obligación tributaria, se establece un sistema especial de pago de las cuotas por recibo procedentes del Padrón del Impuesto, que, además del fraccionamiento de la deuda en los términos previstos en este artículo, permitirá a quienes se acojan al mismo el disfrute de la bonificación establecida en el apartado segundo de este artículo. 2. Al amparo de lo dispuesto en el artículo 9.1 del Texto Refundido de la Ley de Haciendas Locales, se establece una bonificación del 2 por ciento sobre el importe del pago a cuenta del Impuesto a que se refiere el apartado 5 del presente artículo, a favor de aquellos 1 sujetos pasivos que se acojan al sistema especial de pago regulado en los apartados siguientes del presente artículo. -

The University of Texas at Arlington, 2008 Supervising Professor: Douglas Richmond The universality of the cross image within the transatlantic confrontation meant not only a hegemony of culture, but of symbolism. The symbol of the cross existed in both European and American societies hundreds of years before Columbus. In both cultures, the cross was integral in religious ceremony, priestly decoration, and cosmic maps. As a symbol of life and death, of human and divine suffering, of religious and political acquiescence, no other image in transatlantic history has held such a perennial, powerful message as the cross. For colonial Mexico, which felt the brunt of Spanish initiative, the symbol of the cross penetrated the autochthonous culture out of which the independent nation and indigenous church were born. -

I, 4; Cerv., Quixot., 2.51) RESUMENLa accidentada vida del caballero John D. Breval (c. 1680-1738), clasicista del Tri- nity College de Cambridge, conocido literato inglés y preceptor de nobles en el «Grand Tour», incluyó una etapa como militar y hombre de confianza del Duque de Marlborough. Como militar y preceptor, viajó al sur de Portugal y España en tres ocasiones, entre 1708 y 1716. A su paso por muchas ciudades del Alentejo y Andalucía tomó múltiples notas sobre sus anti- güedades y copió 49 inscripciones romanas, la mayor parte de las cuales por autopsia. En 1726, al publicar en Londres sus Remarks on several parts of Europe (dedicado al futuro conde de Cholmondeley), incluyó al final sus notas ibéricas, acompañadas de un nutrido aparato de textos antiguos y bibliografía de su época. En este trabajo presentamos, además de algu- nas novedades biográficas sobre el autor, la traducción al español de los citados capítulos, acompañada de nuestro estudio crítico. Los epígrafes y los detalles sobre ellos que transmite Breval resultan ser un valioso testimonio para nuevas lecturas, consideración de falsos como auténticos, etc. Nuestra investigación sirve, pues, para devolver a John D. Breval su buen cré- dito como transmisor de inscripciones romanas (damnatus por Theodor Mommsen y Emil Hübner en el CIL II), y junto con él también el del gran humanista portugués Andrés de Resende, muchas veces tachado de falsario, a nuestro juicio injustamente. -
