Cold-adapted species are expected to have reached their largest distribution range during a part of the Ice Ages whereas postglacial warming has led to their range contracting toward high-latitude and high-altitude areas. This has resulted in an extant allopatric distribution of populations and possibly to trait differentiations (selected or not) or even speciation. Assessing inter-refugium differentiation or speciation remains challenging for such organisms because of sampling difficulties (several allopatric populations) and disagreements on species concept. In the present study, we assessed postglacial inter-refugia differentiation and potential speciation among populations of one of the most common arcto-alpine bumblebee species in European mountains, Bombus monticola Smith, 1849. -

Iconic Bees: 12 reports on UK bee species Bees are vital to the ecology of the UK and provide significant social and economic benefits through crop pollination and maintaining the character of the landscape. Recent years have seen substantial declines in many species of bees within the UK. The most pervasive causes of bee species decline are to be found in the way our countryside has changed in the past 60 years. Intensification of grazing regimes, an increase in pesticide use, loss of biodiverse field margins and hedgerows, the trend towards sterile monoculture, insensitive development and the sprawl of towns and cities are the main factors in this. I agree with the need for a comprehensive Bee Action Plan led by the UK Government in order to counteract these causes of decline, as called for by Friends of the Earth. -

Entomologica romanica 24: 37-40, 2020 ISSN 2601-7105 online / ISSN 1224-2594 print / doi: 10.24193/entomolrom.24.6 Xestia sextrigata (Haworth, 1809) (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae) a new species expanding into Romania László Rákosy & Demetra Rákosy Summary: Records from Austria, Hungary, Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova collected in the last 30 years suggest that Xestia sextrigata (Haworth, 1809) is extending its range towards South-Eastern Europe. Here we report the first genuine record of X. sextrigata from Romania. Older records from the literature are shown to be erroneous. Rezumat: Pe baza datelor de colectare din ultimii 30 de ani din Austria, Ungaria, România, Ucraina și Republica Moldova, Xestia sextrigata (Haworth, 1809) este considerată o specie expansionistă cu tendințe de lărgire a arealului spre sud-estul Europei. X. sextrigata este pentru prima dată menționată cu certitudine din România. Datele mai vechi din literatură sunt considerate eronate. Key words: Xestia sextrigata, Romania, Europe, distribution, expansion. Introduction of noctuids led to their article and the mention of X. sextrigata to be ignored by specialists. However, Xestia sextrigata (Haworth, 1809) has so their collection (stored under the name „M. Peiu”) far been mentioned two times from the fauna of still exists and is deposited at the Natural History Romania. In the Catalogue of Romanian Lepidoptera (Rákosy et al. 2003) the species is, however, listed under „excluded taxa”, as the existing records were considered unreliable. The first record stems from Săcărâmb (Transilvania) (Fuss 1850) and should have been part of the Franzenau collection under the name X. umbrosa Hübner, 1790. The collection is deposited at the Zoological Museum of the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj, the presence of the voucher specimen of Xestia sextrigata was thus easily checked. -

The Moth Pollinators of Greater Butterfly Orchids Platanthera

In his book ‘T he Various Contrivances by which Orchids are Fertilised by Insects ’ Charles Darwin (1862; 1877) speculated that the Greater Butterfly Orchid (GBO) was pollinated by large night-flying moths. He based his proposal on the following observations: i) the flowers were white and so would show up at night ii) the floral scent to attract pollinators was produced nocturnally iii) the sugary nectar to reward insect visitors was found at the end of a 26mm long conical nectary or spur. This could only be reached by insects with long tongues like butterflies or moths. Careful examination of the structure of the flowers led Darwin to propose that when moths drank nectar the club-shaped masses of pollen positioned either side of the spur entrance became glued to their large com - pound eyes. He speculated that the pollen mass was repositioned as it dried and twist - ed so that it was deposited on the stigmas of the flowers which the moth visited subse - quently. Naturalists soon caught moths with GBO pollen on their eyes consistent with this hypothesis, but it was the meticulous studies of Anders Nilsson (1978) a century later that provided detailed scientific sup - port. It is his Swedish observations that I have attempted to confirm on Scottish plants. -
