  • Newsletter Meridian South Island Championships
Newsletter Issue No. 6 Date: February 2011 Principal Sponsor . At the time of writing this newsletter we are all saddened with the news of such a destructive earthquake in Christchurch. Many of us were directly involved and sustained significant impacts. This ranged from survival with little damage or hardship to major damage with unlivable accommodation, no water, no power and on going aftershocks. We thank all those that have offered assistance. Contacts As with previous regattas, the one in control of the weather was definitely against us for the South Island Championships. It was most unfortunate that we were Postal unable to enjoy a lot of rowing. SIR is quite concerned about this as a lot of PO Box 3261 Christchurch 8140 work and commitment is made prior to the regatta. So it was with some concern that we faced the prospect of serious weather interruptions for the National Telephone Championship regatta. +64 3 435 0628 Email But the BankLink National Rowing Championships came and went with little [email protected] impact from the weather. It did confirm that many are struggling to adjust to the earlier time for this regatta and SIR itself also exhibited a lack of preparedness. Management Continued comments from Rowers and Coaches wanting more training time Chairman have been heard and while the RNZ AGM is the place to consider this it is also a James Sheehan reflection of just how inflexible we have become. M 21 315 480 Vice Chairman Perhaps it is time to recognise just how much the rowing scene has changed.

As the minister responsible for the Games, I could not be more proud of our record . Not only did we showcase our province to the world with over 51 sporting events in 15 different municipalities, we welcomed over 10,000 athletes and officials to two-dozen new and renovated state-of-the-art sporting facilities . It is with the success and lasting legacy of the Games in mind that I want to share my action plan for amateur sport in Ontario – a plan I am calling Game ON . Through the three pillars of participation, development and excellence, I believe we can ensure that girls and boys from diverse backgrounds and of all abilities have the opportunity to lead healthy active lives, develop new skills, and learn lessons that will support them in every aspect of life . Inspired by watching the Games in their own backyard, I want our youth to have a best-in-class amateur sport system from the playground to podium .
