Looking Beyond Now

As I write for this weekend, I am concluding my visit to the Holy Land. The high point of eve- ry day of my visit was celebrating the sacred sacrifice of the Mass at a particular holy site. One of the thoughts that went through my mind each time was that of my unworthiness. I had an awesome feeling of God's presence as we rode the boat on the Sea of Galilee. I could feel and imagine Jesus calling his disciples, who were fishermen, to leave everything and fol- low him. As I walked the path of Christ in his last days, the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem, I kept asking why God would go through all he endured for love of me. Celebrating Mass with another priest and 26 other pilgrims in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre brought tears to my eyes. This was the spot where Jesus laid buried for three days and from there rose from the dead. Here Jesus offered that perfect sacrifice once and for all, as our second reading from the letter to the Hebrews says. There is so much to experience in the Holy Land. Everywhere we visited, I prayed for the intentions of the people of St. Mary Magdalene. I remember sitting in the Church of the Primacy of Peter in Galilee asking God to give me the grace to lead wisely the people of the parish. The church was built to commemorate Jesus giving the key of the kingdom to Peter when he said, “You are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church.” This visit has brought the gospel alive to me in ways beyond words. I thank God for the privilege. I am also grateful to all of you for your prayers for the safety of the pilgrims. I pray that you feel the impact of the prayers we offered for you in those sacred places.

As we approach the final days of the Church’s liturgical year, the Church presents before us the theme of the end times this weekend. The first reading and the gospel present, at first glance, a gloomy and fearful time with the sun darkening, the moon not giving light, and the stars falling out of the sky. After the gloomy days comes the good news: “The wise shall shine brightly like the splendor of the firmament, and those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars forever.”

Jesus gave comforting words of hope as he says: “Heaven and earth shall pass away but my words shall nev- er pass away.” These words are meant to reassure us that God is in control of the world and would not leave us hopeless. St. Mark’s description of the last days was based, to some extent, on what the early Christians were experiencing at the time of his writing. The disciples were persecuted in synagogues and before gover- nors and kings. For him, and indeed most early Christians, the end of the world was imminent. As close as it seemed, he was cautious to say that the time is known only by God himself: “But of that day or hour, no one knows, neither the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father” (Mark 13:32).

As Christians, we are people of hope, based on what Jesus has done for us and what he will do. We also have a vision of reality that transcends the here and now, that looks over the horizon, and that sees beyond rec- orded human history. Therefore, we are to see every day of our lives as opportunities of making that vision a reality even today. Every ending is a new beginning and that is what we are to be doing everyday – making of every new day an opportunity to love more than yesterday and to let go of yesterday’s hurts.

How are we getting ready for this end? What kinds of words are lingering in our minds and hearts? Are they consoling or comforting words? Or are they hurtful and hateful words? Are we seeing the end of the world with the hope of a happy ending or is it with sadness and regrets? Are you ready to start a new day?

—Fr Felix

Parents are reminded that as we endure “cold and flu” season, ALL students who are ill MUST be symptom-free for a full 24 hours before being sent to CCE {just like school}… We want to do everything possible to keep the catechists and students safe. This is why we allow for up to six (6) absences from CCE! Please note there are NO classes next week (November 22-25), as students will be on Thanksgiving break; all classes resume the week of November 29th. We do still have limited space for students who are not yet regis- tered for CCE / Formation classes; parents should contact the Formation Office immediately to check on ses- sion / grade-level availability.

“Youth Nights”: We are pleased to offer two “Youth Nights” per week, one for middle school and one for high school. The high school youth event will be on Sunday, November 15th from 6:30pm – 8:00pm and will feature a sports night in the Family Life Center (FLC). There will be no middle school youth event this week, as Carissa will be out of town at the National Catholic Youth Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana! All our youth events are open to all youth (Catholic or not); bring a friend, or come make a new one, and get to know Carissa Bull, our new Coordinator of Youth Ministry.

Youth Adoration Hour: We have scheduled a special opportunity for our youth to spend an hour in Eucharistic Adoration on Monday, November 29th from 7:00pm – 8:00pm in the Chapel. Fr. Felix will lead this experience, and deliver a special message to the youth; we will also have music to enhance this time of prayer and worship! We will follow the adoration with a pizza dinner in the Family Life Center.

2016 Confirmation Team Meeting: Our fourth planning meeting is scheduled for Thursday, December 3rd from 7:00pm – 9:00pm in St. Mary’s Hall. If you are an adult (maybe a parent?), young adult, or confirmed high school youth looking for a powerful and rewarding ministry, then the Confirmation Team may be for you. The “team” is the group that plans and implements the youth Confirmation program here in the parish; weekly Confirmation sessions begin in January 2016.

First Reconciliation Meeting: Our third Reconciliation session is coming on Monday, December 7th from 6:00pm – 7:30pm. It is required that a parent and the student attend all remaining sacrament sessions! Parents should take their child(ren) to the 2-story Education Building and find their grade-level class… After that, proceed to either the Church {parent meeting in English} or the Family Life Center {parent meeting in Spanish}. THE STUDENTS DO NOT ATTEND THE PARENT MEETING - they go to grade-level classes in the Education Building. Please make sure Chapters 1 – 6 are complete and that your child has memorized the required prayers; the Reconciliation interviews will be held at the December meeting. If you have not yet purchased the blue sacra- ment book for each child, please come by our offices to do that as soon as possible. The sacrament book is $25 per book (cash or check, payable to SMM).

HOW DO YOU SHOP DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON?

Ivana Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation

Here we are again—approaching the holiday season and with it the shopping season. I am looking forward to doing something special for my family and friends—I hope you are, too. As we prepare to cele- brate, may we bear in mind that every decision we make about how to spend our time and money should be guided by the fact that we are Christians and disciples of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whose coming we prepare to celebrate by our baptism. We are people who have been loved and redeemed by Christ, and our only response to that is to love him in return and to strive to keep God’s commandments. Our choices sometimes have to be different, and our lifestyles definitely have to be different from those among us who do not honor God or care about being obedient to him. The third commandment clearly states that we are to keep holy the Sabbath day (Exodus 20:8). This commandment has not changed, and we are still bound to obey it. When we do not, we as individuals, and as a society, suffer the effects of our disobedi- ence to God. “Keeping holy the Sabbath” includes spending time with family, attending Sunday Mass, taking time for rest and recreation, and avoiding activities that are unnecessary or place other people in situations of having to break the commandment themselves, such as shopping and purchasing goods that may be bought on another day of the week, forcing workers to staff stores and keeping these people away from their own worship, family and rest on Sundays.

Some people don’t have any choice about working on Sunday. Some work is necessary: we need our police officers, medical personnel, and other service-oriented workers; but besides that, our society has condoned scenarios which force people into employment that includes working on Sundays in unnecessary jobs. If you have a family to feed, and your employer says, “You will be at work on Sunday or you won’t have a job on Monday,” you are probably going to go to work. Sometimes we don’t have much of a choice about working on Sunday, but we do have a choice about where and when we spend our own time and money: we can choose to stay out of the stores. Some people will argue that working on Sunday gives people jobs and helps them make money for their families. This is an argument that is centuries old. In the short term, such an outcome may appear favorable, and we can justify any decision to break any of God’s laws that we choose. The fact remains that when we keep God’s commandments, we will find blessing, and when we don’t, we will deal with the consequences because God’s way of doing things is always the best way.

Sometimes we have to make our best judgment about what is reasonable to shop for on Sunday. Sometimes it makes sense to make certain pur- Whatever it is you need chases on Sunday. We have to prayerfully consider what is right. If we are for Christmas, you don’t in the habit of routinely shopping on Sunday, it can be difficult to stop. need it badly enough to When work and other activities eat up most of our free time during the week, we find ourselves “needing” to shop on Sundays. Those who do break God’s command- shift work and some people who are working more than one job may find it ment to get it. especially tough. Yet, God says that Sunday is not a day to catch up on errands. If you have so much going on in your life that you can’t rearrange your schedule to get your shop- ping done at some other time during the week, you might have to consider that not everything you are doing is of God. If you are too busy to keep God’s commandments, you are too busy.

If there is one thing that could make a difference in our lives for the better, it would be to keep holy the Lord’s day, so I’m throwing down a challenge that will be very difficult for some of us to keep, but it is very important: Make a promise in your family that you will not shop on Sundays during Advent and during the holi- day season. Whatever it is you need for Christmas, you don’t need it badly enough to break God’s com- mandment to get it. If anything, give your family the gift of KEEPING HOLY the Lord’s day, rather than more material gifts, and see what a difference it makes in your life. If you accept this challenge, LET ME KNOW!
