The Hon Katrina Hodgkinson MP Minister for Primary Industries Minister for Small Business MEDIA RELEASE Tuesday 24 September 2013 PLENTY OF FISH TO CATCH WITH FISH STOCKING SEASON OPEN Minister for Primary Industries and Small Business Katrina Hodgkinson today launched the 2013 fish stocking season by releasing large adult rainbow trout ready for catching into Pejar Dam, North of Goulburn. Ms Hodgkinson said the fish are just the first of millions to be stocked into waterways across the State, as part of the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government’s continuing commitment to improving recreational fishing opportunities in regional NSW. “This year the NSW Government’s fish hatcheries will produce and stock more than one million native fish and three million trout and salmon into impoundments and streams throughout regional NSW,” Ms Hodgkinson said. “As an added bonus this year, some lakes will be stocked with adult rainbow trout which are no longer required for breeding at the Gaden Trout Hatchery at Jindabyne and the Dutton Trout Hatchery at Ebor.” These annual fish stocking programs are funded in part by money raised by the NSW Recreational Fishing Fee, which is placed in the NSW Recreational Fishing Freshwater and Saltwater Trusts. “A further 10,000 rainbow trout fingerlings and 5,000 brown trout fingerlings will be stocked into Pejar Dam this summer,” Ms Hodgkinson said. “The local Top Pub fishing club will also release 2,300 Australian bass into Pejar Dam in November as part of the Recreational Fishing Trust funded dollar-for-dollar native fish stocking program. “This takes the total number of Australian bass released into Pejar Dam over the last four years to more than 10,000 fry. “Fish stocking is always a welcome boost to regional communities, as freshwater angling creates jobs, supports businesses and tourism,” Ms Hodgkinson said.
