The exercise is part of the required material for the MS Ill's (juniors enrolled in the Advanced Reserve Officers Training Course) and actually counts towards their final grade. The Night Land Navigation is perhaps the most difficult of the three subjects and is designed not only to test the cadets' proficiency in the use of a compass at night but also to measure their ability to work closely with two other cadets as a team in a stress situation. Barracks Training consisted primarily of information relating to life at Summer Camp. Almost all of the juniors and some seniors and sophomores will be attending Advanced Camp at Fort Riley, Kansas. When we were young (no, it wasn't before Pearl Harbor) we read avidly, and one of the delights of our pre- and early-teens was a series of novels by Franklin W. Dixon - the Hardy Boys. The two novice sleuths, sons of detective Fenton Hardy, sojourned through a myriad of adventures and fulfilled a multitude of our dreams of pseudo-swashbuckling.
