The entire report is based on my practical experiences that I have gathered while working as a desk reporter. The internship report also connects my nine weeks practical experience with academic knowledge. While preparing this report I tried my best to follow the guidelines given by DIU.

I will be highly encouraged if you kindly accept my report.

All the praises are for the almighty Allah who gives me the ability and strength for completing this internship and internship project report.

I would like to thank everyone who assisted me in preparation of this report. Actually SATV is my first working place where I had started my profession as trainee basis staff. As my first experience Shafinaj Sultana, News Room Editor of SATV who had treated me like her student. She had taught and inspired me throughout my three month’s intern at SATV. Actually it was my great fortune that I had got opportunity to work with her and learned so many things.

Finally I wish to thank various people for their contribution throughout my journey. Without my family and friends’ support I could not be able to complete this journey successfully. As a fresher, sometimes it was too boring for me to work for six or seven hours per day in every week. But for their support day by day I felt comfortable about this job system.

An internship is a method of on-the-job training for professional careers. Internships for professional careers are similar to apprenticeships for trade and vocational jobs. Although interns are typically college or university students, they can also be high school students or post-graduate adults. On occasion, they are middle school or even elementary students. In some countries, internships for school children are called work experience. Internships may be paid or unpaid, and are usually understood to be temporary positions. Unpaid and low-paid internships can run afoul of minimum wage laws, which sometimes have exceptions for educational positions.

Generally, an internship consists of an exchange of services for experience between the student and an organization. Students can also use an internship to determine if they have an interest in a particular career, create a network of contacts, or gain school credit. Some interns find permanent, paid employment with the organizations with which they interned. This can be a significant benefit to the employer as experienced interns often need little or no training when they begin regular employment. Unlike a trainee program, however, employment at the completion of an internship is not guaranteed.

Internships provide real world experience to those looking to explore or gain the relevant knowledge and skills required to enter into a particular career field. Internships are relatively short term in nature with the primary focus on getting some on the job training and taking what’s learned in the classroom and applying it to the real world. Interns generally have a supervisor who assigns specific tasks and evaluates the interns overall work. For internships for credit, usually a faculty sponsor will work along with the site supervisor to ensure that the necessary learning is taking place. Interns can be high school or college students or even adults interested in trying out a new career. Students do internships to gain relevant experience in a particular career field as well as to get exposure to determine if they have a genuine interest in the field. Internships are an excellent way to begin building those all important connections that are invaluable in developing and maintaining a strong professional network for the future.

Internships are invaluable learning experiences for college students - and almost a necessity for any college graduate. Employers are demanding that college grads have "real world" experience, and internships are one of the best ways for college students to get that experience. More and more often, new hires are being drawn from the ranks of former interns whose work behavior and skills have already been put to the test. Interns who have proven themselves to a company throughout a successful on-the-job experience will be favored for full-time positions over candidates who have not completed an internship.

Internship Objectives:

CHAPTER III MY EXPERIENCE AT SATV

My three-month of internship program at SATV was full of new experiences. During this period I have gotten an opportunity to enrich myself as much as I can. At SATV I had chance to get involved with different types of people. Actually if I look back to my first day work to last day then it seems to me like a journey where I have faced lots of ups and downs. At SATV, I had experienced works on international, national, feature and entertainment beat as a trainee news room editor.

On the first day of my work at SATV, News Room Editor Shafinaj Sultana had introduced me with other staffs of the office. Actually for their cordial behavior I felt much comfortable and relaxed. Then my supervisor there at SATV had given international news for making a report. That time I had faced lots of problems. Firstly that time my Bangla typing speed was not so good. For this reason at first day I had made only two reports in whole day. After a week I had made myself comfortable with official environment. Between these seven days whenever I felt myself mentally down my supervisor had motivated me all the time.

In my academic life through my teachers I have already known about news value and news treatment. But in my practical field I can get opportunity to use all knowledge that I have gathered throughout academic life. At SATV I had worked in international, national and entertainment beat. Now I can understand the value of news especially in international news. In international news I feel confident about myself for making report on any kind of international issues. I had got several time where I have to handle international desk alone. I mean that time whole day I had covered all international news alone. Actually that time it was quiet tough. But day by day I have gained confidence about my work. Now I can take any kind of work’s pressure and try to handle it perfectly.

In SATV office my supervisor Saiful Huda had tried to experiment with my working capability. That’s why besides international news he suggested me to make some feature on basis of different type of lifestyle issues. At first it was difficult for writing feature because that time I was comfortable with hard news rather than writing features. But day by day I was improving my skill in feature writing with help of my in charge.

Page 15 ©Daffodil International University Internship Report on SATV

In television news every work or report runs like a train. I want to mean that here all time a news room editor or reporter feels pressure for submitting news as soon as possible. I had also felt that pressure. Actually it was too much tough to make a report and that report have to make perfectly. Throughout the three-month internship I had faced this problem so badly.

I had also experienced several kinds of works. For example- I had also taken news over the telephone from district level correspondent or in emergency time. Here I have learned that I have to be confident and hundred percent sure whatever I collect from that particular correspondent.

Achievements from Internship:

For a student of Journalism and Mass Communication internship is very much essential. Through it, a student can make his/her path for a good career. Through internship students can get a chance of getting involved with industry and new people.

I had started my internship from February 1, 2015 and completed it on May 1, 2015. After the internship at SATV I have achieved a lot of experience. Because of internship I have also able to get know different media person, media house, media working system. Furthermore my Bangla writing and communication skills have improved which will help me in near future.

Working at a media house like SATV I have made myself dynamic more than before. Now I can asses myself as confident, self-contained and disciplined trainee reporter.

For this internship project I got a chance to experience the journalism profession so closely. It gave me opportunity for preparing myself. It gave me inspiration for building up my profession in this field.

Page 16 ©Daffodil International University Internship Report on SATV

Challenges Faced During the Internship:

Through my internship project I had faced some problems. My journey to go to the office and back to my home took lot of time. I had faced a problem that I was not good in Bangla typing. One more thing it was difficult for me to match up with the official environment.

While writing a story it was difficult to find out innovative Bangla vocabulary. In a news story a reporter have to give some magical word or magical thing that can attract viewers’ attention. And for this a reporter or a sub editor has to read different types of book.

Throughout my internship strongly I have felt that whether you work as a reporter or as news editor you have to communicate with different types of people. Actually in the first month of my internship I was little bit introvert which caused negative impact in my mind. So I realize that in every sector a person should increase communication capability to ensure maximum achievement in professional level.

Page 17 ©Daffodil International University Internship Report on SATV

CHAPTER IV

RECOMMENDATIONS

Throughout my three-month internship project I have faced lot of problems. Actually through that type of problem I’m realizing that if a student gets chance in their academic life to get involve with practical field then it will help him/her a lot. Before a student enters into practical field through internship they should introduce with that field. So in academic period if students get opportunity to do more outdoor types assignment then it will help them to overcome their fear. I just want to say that as a student of journalism he/she have to get the guts of facing both outdoor and indoor activities.

One more thing I want to say that if in our department have a chance to enhance internship’s period then really it will be very much helpful for a student. So I want to say that authority should increase the period of internship at least four (4) months. This will help us to increase our confidence level and skills.

Page 18 ©Daffodil International University Internship Report on SATV

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION

Daffodil International University is one of the top private universities in Bangladesh. I feel proud for completing my graduation from this university. From the bottom of my heart I want to give thanks to my teachers and fellows.

I am really thankful to my university for giving me the chance to get my internship at SATV. During my three month internship I got opportunity to enrich myself. Working at SATV I have developed my knowledge and experiences. Now I am confident if I get chance I will be able to perform in a good way in this sector.

The experience I have earned by working with SATV is the rare opportunity to learn how a TV station runs their work.
