The study includes discourse analyses of the first seven seasons of the program, of the season seven official American Idol message boards, and of the 2002 and 2008 show press coverage. The American themes included a rags-to-riches narrative, archetypes, and celebrity. The discourse-formed archetypes indicate which archetypes people of varied races may inhabit, who may be sexual, and what kinds of sexuality are permitted. On the show emotional exhibitions, archetypal resonance, and talent create a seemingly authentic celebrity while discourse positioning confirms this celebrity. The show also fostered a complication-free national American collective identity through the show discourse, while the online message boards facilitated the formation of two types of collective identities: a large group of American Idol fans and smaller contestant-affiliated fan groups. Finally, the press coverage study found two overtones present in the 2002 coverage, derision and awe, which were absent in the 2008 coverage. The primary reasons for this absence may be reluctance to criticize an immensely popular show and that the American Idol success was no longer surprising by 2008. By 2008, American Idol was so ingrained within American culture that to deride it was to critique America itself.

    Let’s meet the three cultures EDITO In November 2001, the Spanish National Agency for the Youth Programme, INJUVE, organized a Euromed Seminar in Molina (Malaga, Spain). On this occasion, I visited Granada’s milestones, the Alhambra where I was imbued by its legendary architecture and its history, then I went to the Cathedral. Imagine an edifice built with extraordinary norms and, suddenly a magical soundtrack was played and sounded inside these walls as a revelation. The music is entitled “the three cultures”. An idea occurred then to me as to giving the opportunity to motivate partners in the youth field to work together on the three cultures theme with the primary concern of promoting knowledge about and from each other’s cultures. The Spanish National Agency was immediately won over and eagerly welcomed the proposal. The project asks: What are the words used to refer to “modern”, “contemporary” and “art” in Southeast Asia? What do these terms denote and connote? When and how did they historically emerge? How do terminologies align or differ in the region’s many vernaculars? How do ideas of modernity, contemporaneity and art itself become mobile and take flight when shifting between languages? There are many dis- crepancies in the nature of these nine languages, as well as in the sources available on them, and the style, tone and scope of each author’s contribution.
