    A Short Review of the German Literature about the Spanish War The German Writer Willi Bredel, Captain of the Thaelmann Battalion, 1937 Sketch written by Herbert Schneider Hamburg-Fuhlsbüttel 2012 2 A short review of the German literature about the Spanish War The most famous literature about the Spanish War for the political left was provided for the political left by English, American or French writers like Ernest Hemingway's „For whom the bell tolls“, Orwell's „Homage on Catalonia“, Malraux's „L'espoir“ and Bernanos' „Les Grands Cimetières sous la Lune“. Such works with their international significance don't exist in the German culture although it exists a very important number of left wing but also bourgeois literature about the Spanish War. Two writers can be named as symbols for wide engagement of German writers on these themes: Bertolt Brecht and his play „The guns of Mrs. Carrar” and the journalistic engagement of famous Thomas and Heinrich Mann for the Spanish Republic. The German left wing and most of the liberal orientated writers emigrated after the takeover of the nazis. The Spanish War was for them a signal for the liberation of Germany. So the whole German emigration was engaged for the spanish people. The main item was the description of the combat of the Spanish People and their confederates. So novels and short stories are the main instruments to express this item and a lot of works have a documentary character. Many works are journalistic and eyewitness accounts but on the other side many novels are very skillful.

The antifascist emigration in Europe and America, London [u.a.]: Verso 2006 ISBN-13: 978-1-84467-068-0, XI, 852 S., $55.00 (cloth) Reviewed by: John-Paul Stonard As an epigraph for his Exile Dialogues, Bertolt Brecht used a phrase taken from a comic descrip- tion by P.G. Wodehouse of a character crawling around a dark room in search of a light switch: „He knew that he was still alive. More he could not say“. Brecht's choice of these words was strik- ing: a more concise evocation of the exile condition would be difficult to find. In his „Weimar in Exile“, first published in French in 1987, now translated for the first time into English, the late Jean-Michel Palmier has attempted a detailed survey of German émigrés from Hitler, with the intention, as he puts it, to „grasp the fate of the culture“ (p.15). The sentiment of Brecht's epi- graph, a Beckettian hope against hope, lies at the heart of his book. His account shows the extraordinary diversity of experiences of those who fled Nazi Germany after the Reichstag fire and the book burnings of early 1933, and also attempts to place the phenomenon of exile in a histori- cal context: it is only possible to understand the cultural efflorescence of the Weimar Republic, he suggests, by comprehending its tragic extinction after 1933. Considering both the magnitude of the emigration, and the lack of coherence it presents to the his- torian, this is indeed an ambitious enterprise.

From Socialist Realism to a New Individualism: Some Trends in Recent East German Literature I A comprehensive survey of recent literature in the DDR is not possible within the scope of this paper. I will however attempt to trace the transformation of literature, particularly narrative prose, from the obligatory socialist realism of only a decade ago to the more open, introspective, critical works of recent years. The literature of the DDR has become much more complex; it has in some cases dealt with themes and styles as individualistic as one can find anywhere. This article is necessarily very selective; authors of the early postwar years are discussed only insofar as they provide a background or perspective for later works. Johannes Bobrowski was a noncomformist in the fifties; yet I see no direct develop- ment from him to the present. Hermann Kant's Das Impressum (Neuwied: Luchter- hand, 1972), for example, is not discussed because it marks little development from its antecedent, Die Aula (Miinchen: Riitten & Loening, 1966). The factors which contribute most to literature in the DDR are the principles and tendencies formulated by Altkommunisten such as Anna Seghers, J. R. Becher, and Arnold Zweig, under the influence of Soviet cultural politics. In 1949, the government issued a set of guidelines for cultural development and for the improvement of the working and living conditions of the intelligentsia. Simultane- ously, it established national prizes in literature and the arts. At the same time, the German Academy of the Arts and the German Writers' Association were estab- lished.

GEROLIMATOS: The Politics of Irresponsibility and anti-Semitism in the Rural People’s Movement in Schleswig-Holstein, 1928-1930 (under the direction of Christopher R. Browning) An examination of an agrarian protest movement in northern Germany at the end of the 1920s allows us to realize that the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSDAP) did not have a monopoly on anti-Semitism in the political culture of the Weimar Republic. The Rural People’s Movement in Schleswig-Holstein is taken as symptomatic of the crisis of legitimacy of democratic form of government whereby political activists sought to discredit the regime through politics divorced from reality yet effective for mobilization. The corollary of Nazi success at the local level is that important social groups in Germany failed to use democratic means and accept pluralism to alleviate the considerable social and economic stresses facing the country during the Great Depression. The surprising and unprecedented voter support for the NSDAP in the September 1930 Reichstag elections is partially explained by the mass desertion of constituencies from all major political parties followed by support for single-issue parties and non-affiliated movements like the Rural People’s Movement.

And not just that: his determined and apparently spectacular step, highlighted by every biographer in the GDR (as well as by Uhse himself) describing his life, did provide him, from the very moment he returned from his exile in Mex- ico to East Germany in 1948, with a prosperous career and a reputation – according to his ‘official’ biography - of being one of the more heroic antifascists in the country. Reality, however, tells us a different story. From what he has shared with us on his life and times in his autobiographical novel, Söldner und Soldat (“Mercenary and Soldier”), the book he published in Paris, shortly before his ad- mission as a member by the KPD in 1935, we understand that he must have left us – mainly because of his work as a journalist - a myriad of “Biography Generators” (Alois Hahn). And indeed, in various archives in present day Germany, hundreds of articles of his hand he con- tributed to newspapers and periodicals in the years before turning communist were recov- ered, documents that were greatly unknown or inaccessible – assuming they wanted to know about them in the first place because of Uhses solid reputation as an exemplary ‘anti- fascist’ - to his ‘old’ biographers.

    Deutsche Exilliteratur in Lateinamerika Susanne Bach Außer in einigen europäischen Ländern — vor allem Holland und Schweden — sowie in den Vereinigten Staaten erschienen auch in Lateinamerika Erstausga­ ben von emigrierten Schriftstellern und Dichtem in deutscher Sprache. Jeder Dichter und Schriftsteller möchte natürlich seine Arbeiten veröffentlicht sehen, und dies war gleichzeitig fast auch das einzige, was die in Lateinamerika gedruckten Autoren erwarten konnten. Leser hatten sie in diesen spanisch- oder portugiesischsprachigen Ländern nur wenige, und Export von Büchern, z.B. nach Nordamerika, gab es kaum. Eine Veröffentlichung war daher eher eine Selbstbestätigung als ein Beitrag zu den Lebenskosten der Autoren. Einige hatten die Hoffnung sogar ganz aufgegeben wie z.B. Stefan Zweig, der in diesem Sinne in seinem Abschiedsbrief schrieb: "...nachdem die Welt meiner eigenen Sprache für mich untergegangen war". Argentinien Um so mehr muß man den Verlegern dankbar sein. In Argentinien sind mir die Namen von zwanzig Verlagen bekannt, die während der Exiljahre deutsche Bücher herausgebracht haben.1 Bei einigen dieser Verlage erschien nur ein einziges Exilbuch, bei anderen mehrere — Cosmopolita und Estrellas stehen hier mit Abstand an der Spitze. Die berühmteste und jetzt seltenste dieser argentinischen Erstausgaben ist die Schachnovelle von Stefan Zweig, die 1942 bei Pigmalion erschien. Viele der in Argentinien gedruckten Autoren hatten sich in ihrer Heimat noch keinen Namen gemacht, abgesehen von Paul Zech und Jacob Paul Walter. Zu den bekannten Autoren ist noch Franz Werfel zu zählen, von dem ein Buch, nämlich Eine blaßblaue Frauenschrift, 1942 bei Estrellas herauskam. Werfel selbst war aber nie in Argentinien gewesen. Die übrigen Autoren der in Argentinien gedruckten Erstausgaben lebten fast alle selbst im argentinischen Exil; aber nur wenige von ihnen beschäftigten sich in ihren Werken mit ihrer Umwelt.
