Emilio Pettoruti
Emilio Pettoruti A Painter before the Mirror m - STOCKCERO - n iii Emilio Pettoruti A Painter before the Mirror iv Emilio Pettoruti The memoirs of Emilio Pettoruti ( La Plata 1892-Paris 1971) “A painter before the Mirror” was published a few years before the painter´s death. Not only do we witness the vicissi- tudes of his struggle in order to impose his works, but we also find key aspects of his aesthetic convictions. His ties with Fu- turism and Cubism, his appreciation of color and light, in short a conception of art that led him to evolve towards an original abstraction, as his last paintings so well demonstrate. His essential concepts about art and life are highlighted by an existence defined by his beliefs and passions”. Buenos Aires – May 2013
BUENOS AIRES – MAY 2013 ENG 294 – Capital of Culture Day 1 – Arrival and Coffee We arrive in the morning and walk to the obelisk (r), then go for coffee and media lunas at Café Tortoni – always rated one of the 10 Most Beautiful Cafes in the World – and also manage to find the park where the characters in The Tunnel would often meet. Friday, May 17 May Friday, On Cover (l-r) – Kenny Gilliard, Ashleigh Huffman, Daniel Faulkenberry and Juliane Bullard stand in Plaza Francia with the National Museum of Fine Arts behind them. This was a short walk from the hotel and just across the street from the flea market. EL ATENEO GRAN SPLENDID Day 2 – Exploring the City of Books Day 2 – La Biela and El Ateneo This coffee shop across the green from Saturday, May 18 May Saturday, Recoleta Cemetery is one of the most famous in the city, frequented by celebrities, past and present. Previous page: (l-r) Ashleigh Huffman, Kenny Gilliard, Daniel Faulkenberry and Juliane Bullard walk across the bridge over Avenida Libertador, linking the Recoleta Cemetery area to the law school and the park holding the steel flower, Floralis Generica, which supposedly opens at dawn and closes at dusk – although no one’s actually seen it in action. La Biela – The “Tie Rod” This is a great spot for breakfast or just hanging out for a coffee. You can even sit and have your picture taken with authors Jorge Luis Borges and Bioy Casares. Note the cutout on the chair – it’s a tie rod, a reference to the café’s early days. -
Appendix: the Use of Symbolic Notation in Descriptive Logic
Appendix: The Use of Symbolic Notation in Descriptive Logic One well-known introductory textbook on normative logic happens to use, as an example, certain propositions from Patristic theology,1 with the implication that Christians would do well to accept the correct- ness of the comparatively little remembered Patripassian heresy. In this case, the point can be adequately stated using the ordinary notation employed in normative predicate logic:2 PATRIPASSIANISM Px. x is God. Qx. x suffered and died on the Cross. a. the Father. b. the Son. 1. ∃∀xyPy() ↔ x = y 2. Pa 3. Pb ∴= 4. ab 5. Qb ∴ 6. Qa In fact, however, Christians in all periods have usually found the idea of the Father’s having suffered and died to be a repugnant one; and the Church of the fourth century was disturbed much less by Patripassianism than by another doctrine, one that can be stated using the same vocabulary: ARIANISM 1. ∃∀xyPy() ↔ x = y 1 Hodges, Logic, pp. 138, 262. 2 Since normative logicians have not achieved a complete standardization of the notation they use, it is probably worth specifying how I intend the symbols employed in the example sequences to be read. They are as follows: ∃x : ‘There exists some x such that ... ’; ∀x : ‘For all x ... ’; PQ↔ : ‘P if and only if Q’ (i.e., P and Q are either both true or both false); xy= : ‘x equals y’; ∴: ‘therefore’; ¬P : ‘not P’ (i.e., P is false); xy≠ : ‘x does not equal y’; PQ∧ : ‘P and Q’. 155 156 Appendix 2. Babalon Rising: Jack Parsons’ Witchcraft Prophecy
Babalon Rising: JaCk parsons’ WitChCraFt propheCy Erik Davis In the forty yearS or so following the death of John Whiteside Parsons in 1952, his name—Jack Parsons from here on out—circulated principally among magic folk, critics of Scientology, and historians of modern rock- etry. In the new century, however, the tale of the SoCal rocket scientist- cum-sex magician has proven a hot commodity, told and retold in a series of articles, biographies, graphic novels, movie scripts, and reality tv shows that have transformed Parsons into one of the most storied figures in the history of American occulture. The superficial reasons are easy to see: with its charismatic blend of sex, sorcery, technology and death, Parsons’ story haunts a dark crossroads of the Southern California mindscape, scrawling a prophetic glyph in the wet pavement of postwar America. Indeed, his tale is so outrageous that if it did not exist, it would need—as they say—to be invented. But if it were invented—that is, if his life were presented as the fiction it in so many ways resembles—it would be hard to believe, even as a fiction. The narrative would seem overly contrived, at once too pulp and too poetic, too rich with allegorical synchronicity to stage the necessary suspension of disbelief. In this essay, I want to explore an unremarked aspect of Jack Parsons’ life and thought, what I will call his magickal feminism. In his 1946 text Free- 165 166 Erik Davis dom is a Two-Edged Sword, Parsons issued a call for women to take up the spiritual, sexual, and political sword—a cry for female autonomy that also eerily anticipated the militant witchcraft that would find historical expres- sion in California over twenty years later. -
Syncretism, Revitalization and Conversion
RELIGIOUS SYNTHESIS AND CHANGE IN THE NEW WORLD: SYNCRETISM, REVITALIZATION AND CONVERSION by Stephen L. Selka, Jr. A Thesis Submitted to the Faculty of The Schmidt College of Arts and Humanities in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts Florida Atlantic University Boca Raton, Florida August 1997 ABSTRACT Author: Stephen L. Selka. Jr. Title: Religious Synthesis and Change in the New World: Syncretism, Revitalization and Conversion Institution: Florida Atlantic University Thesis Advisor: Dr. Gerald Weiss, Ph.D. Degree: Master of Arts Year: 1997 Cases of syncretism from the New World and other areas, with a concentration on Latin America and the Caribbean, are reviewed in order to investigate the hypothesis that structural and symbolic homologies between interacting religions are preconditions for religious syncretism. In addition, definitions and models of, as well as frameworks for, syncretism are discussed in light of the ethnographic evidence. Syncretism is also discussed with respect to both revitalization movements and the recent rise of conversion to Protestantism in Latin America and the Caribbean. The discussion of syncretism and other kinds of religious change is related to va~ious theoretical perspectives, particularly those concerning the relationship of cosmologies to the existential conditions of social life and the connection between religion and world view, attitudes, and norms. 11 RELIGIOUS SYNTHESIS AND CHANGE lN THE NEW WORLD: SYNCRETISM.
