Remember last week’s letter when I told you I never wanted to see you again? Let’s just sum this up to the fact that I’m bad with following through on breakups. Do you know what I like best about the last Retriever of the year? The same crappy articles become outdated and last throughout the summer. I like picking up the May paper sometime mid-July and reading about how some policy that no one cared about in May affected people in May. I also love the op-eds that deal with news items that are no longer pertinent, such as Anna Nicole’s kids or how Jazzman’s café had a broken espresso machine that took a week to fi x. How lame. Which reminds me: What am I supposed to do when the espresso machines are broken in the Commons? I can’t possibly function without my 4 shot iced Americano every morning. This week, I had to struggle through, barely awake at half mast. I actually caught myself telling jokes without punch- lines and writing too frequently about Girl with Awesome Tattoo. An example of a joke going nowhere without a punch-line? You might be in the middle of one right now. Some of the adults on campus have started to worry that us kids have fi gured out that mulch is made of poop and poop can explode in fl ames when you light it on fi re. Apparently, there have been twelve or more fi res on campus related to fresh mulch being ignited by cigarette butts. Thank God I am bringing this concern to you now, because I am sure that no one will read this, get excited and immediately attempt to ignite a few fresh piles of mulch. Just to take it that extra step, I’m willing to bet that none of the informed Retriever staff have already set the remaining “good piles” ablaze. Jay Lagorio e-mailed me this past week. He said that I was funny and that he would welcome me making fun of him at any time. I think it was some sort of reverse psychological ploy in order to subconsciously convince me to not make Helen Zhang [Retriever Staff] Heating Up: For information on mulch fi res, see page 2 in the News section. fun of him. Either way, it was nice to hear from the new SGA president. I do have a question, though. What was the point of the picture attachment entitled ‘penis with Gore proves engaging and passionate in sunglasses’? I don’t think I’m going to open it. Questions Q. I’m a procrastinator in just about everything I do, so when I decided I would need to get some kind of a job this summer, I naturally put it off to do later. Now, the semester is just about over and I have no form of employment at all waiting for me at home. This wouldn’t be so bad, except that I am really short on cash and will need to be earning money as soon as possible. What’s the fastest for Quinn way to get a summer job on short notice? Where would be the best places to start looking for a job? A. Just for future reference, the best time to start looking for a summer job if you want to be certain you will get a decent position is probably around spring break. At this point, only the jobs no non-procrastinator wanted will be left. Luckily enough for the very desperate you, there are usually a few positions open somewhere even if you have to wear a dorky paper hat and fl ip burgers all summer. Start looking in places that get a lot of seasonal traffi c: summer camps, beach clubs, snowball stands, outlet shopping centers, etc. Anywhere that business increases as drastically as the high temperatures is going to need extra help now and will be okay with letting you go when fall rolls around. Don’t try and pretend like you will be there permanently and quit by surprise before school or you will have burned a potential bridge for next summer’s employment. Also, don’t procrastinate anymore. You have reached your emergency deadline, so get yourself out of the house and job hunting within the fi rst week of being home. Until you can fi nd a steady paycheck type of job, earn your spare cash wherever you can. Offer to mow the lawn or wash the car for your parents, for a certain amount, of course. If nothing else works, set up your own lemonade stand and sell it cheap. With luck, you can have the 12-year-old down the street out of business in under a week.

Q. I’ve got an end-of-the-school-year question for you. I had a blast living on campus and I made a ton of great friends that I hung out with constantly. I was always so busy at college that I didn’t bother to keep in touch with my friends from home, except for the rare phone call and cursory Facebook wall birthday message. I want to be able to get together with both groups of friends over the summer vacation, but I don’t know if my home friends and I will still be as close as we used to be and my school friends all live so far apart. How do I keep from being bored and lonely all summer if I don’t have any friends to hang out with? A. If you can’t fi nd a single person to hang out with over summer break, you have worse problems with your friends than long distance or not keeping in touch. Defi ning someone as a friend usually implies that not only do you enjoy being in their company, but they like being in yours too. I doubt you will go three months and not see another soul, but you have to be willing to put more effort into getting together since you can’t just wander down the hallway and fi nd someone to hang out with. If you give people enough notice, they can make arrangements to all (or at least most or some) be free from jobs and other commitments. Let the college campus be your central meeting point; it’s the closest thing to the ‘middle’ of everyone’s homes you will fi nd, and you can always take the chance of no classes to explore the local area and fi nd something fun to do. This works especially well if some of your friends are taking summer classes at the school. Just don’t make the same mistake over the summer of ignoring your old friends (unless, of course, they are worth ignoring and you perhaps subconsciously are trying to cut ties) in favor of college friends. If anything, it should be a bit of the other way around because it is easier and will even things out. If your friends from home are the decent kind of friends, it won’t matter that you didn’t keep in touch because you will all just pick up right where you left off, with the pleasant addition of more stories to share, if you choose to divulge what you’ve been up to. You could even go completely crazy and invite both groups to some function. Then your friends would meet your friends and they could be friends... oh the social possibilities (a.k.a. drama). Have fun with that.
