Playhouse Youth Company from the Director DREAM AWAKE PLAYHOUSE YOUTH COMPANY FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Playhouse Friends, ‘we are such stuff As dreams are made on, and our little life Is rounded with a sleep.’ • Shakespeare, The Tempest. What are the significance of dreams when you’re stuck in a room? It has been an incredibly taxing and exhausting year and a half for all, and preparing to make Dream Awake I thought a lot about the strange and unique impact on the next generation. The deferral of their lives, their growth and their dreams. When building this show, Michaela Murphy, our Director of Education, asked me to pick a theme to centre the show around. Dreams came pretty naturally and quickly. It’s a theme that works on multiple levels: the way it felt like we were sleepwalking through the last year, the mad dreams we’ve had along the way, and also dreams of the future. I was interested in not just hearing from this group, but working with them to build an entire show around what the word ‘dream’ has meant to them during the last year. And that’s exactly what we did. It has been an absolute pleasure to work with this exceptional group of young women. It is my first in-person production I’ve directed since the pandemic began, and I cannot have asked for better reintroduction into the theatrical world. They have worked so hard and grown so tremendously, while imbuing the rehearsal room with such creativity, curiosity, humour and joy, all of which has been so infectious. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for them in the future. Here are some helpful hints for your visit to the Marian Theatre. The top priority of our staff is to provide an enjoyable day of live theatre for you and your students. We offer you this study guide as a tool to prepare your students prior to the performance. SUGGESTIONS FOR STUDENT ETIQUETTE Note-able behavior is a vital part of theater for youth. Going to the theater is not a casual event. It is a special occasion. If students are prepared properly, it will be a memorable, educational experience they will remember for years. 1. Have students enter the theater in a single file. Chaperones should be one adult for every ten students. Our ushers will assist you with locating your seats. Please wait until the usher has seated your party before any rearranging of seats to avoid injury and confusion. While seated, teachers should space themselves so they are visible, between every groups of ten students. Teachers and adults must remain with their group during the entire performance. 2.     An In-Depth Study of ‘Triptych’, from Seamus Heaney’s Field Work An In-Depth Study of ‘Triptych’, from Seamus Heaney’s Field Work Martin Connolly This paper focuses critical attention on ‘Triptych’, the sequence of three poems in Seamus Heaney’s 1979 collection Field Work. The sequence directly follows the opening poem ‘Oysters’, and by virtue of position alone commands attention. It is the first of a number of poems in the collection to address the conflict in Northern Ireland, and can be seen as a kind of public poetry, very different in tone, theme and style from early Heaney. This exploration derives from attempts to provide satisfactory answers to questions concerning elements within the sequence which resist smooth interpretation. My method of approach is largely chronological, in the sense that I go through the poems starting at the beginning and plough through to the end, stanza by stanza, sometimes line by line, attempting to guide the reader toward an understanding of the poem derived from apparent textual evidence. Early on, however, I do state what I think the poetic sequence is designed to be, and this argument informs my interpretation throughout. Yet, at every point, I provide what I consider a coherent rationale and logic for my critical opinions. I would certainly welcome debate on each and every point. The conclusions I have come to in regard to this poetic sequence, are, at times, negative, but not exclusively so. I have looked at this poetic sequence up close and － 129 － found it to be problematic in a number of areas.

We would like to take this opportunity to give you some information regarding the Costume Shop Staff, our Costume Shop Facilities, and our Fitting Protocol. C OSTUME S HOP S TAFF Melissa Caldwell-Weddig – Costume Shop Supervisor [email protected] The Costume Supervisor is responsible for maintaining all costume stock, materials and equipment used for the construction of costumes. The Costume Supervisor manages all use of costume stock with production needs, rentals and all events. Ensures that show comes in on time, on budget and within the scope designed. Kyle Schellinger – Cutter Draper [email protected] The Cutter/Draper is responsible for the patterning, cutting of mockups, fitting, final fabric cutting, construction, and preparation of all assigned production costumes while maintaining the vision of the costume designer within necessary budget and time constraints. Elizabeth Aaron – Costumer and Wardrobe Supervisor [email protected] Amber Williams – Costumer and Wardrobe Supervisor [email protected] Costumers stitch and finish all assigned costumes per draper instructions. The Wardrobe Supervisor heads the Wardrobe Crew and coordinates the care, management and organization of all costumes throughout the dress rehearsals and performances. The Wardrobe Supervisor is responsible for directing and supervising the execution of the Costume Designs for all productions when in the space and through the run.
