The Duality of the Composer-Performer
The Duality of the Composer-Performer by Marek Pasieczny Submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Arts Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Supervisors: Prof. Stephen Goss ©Marek Pasieczny 2015 The duality of the composer-performer A portfolio of original compositions, with a supplementary dissertation ‘Interviews Project: Thirteen Composers on Writing for the Guitar’. Abstract The main focus of this submission is the composition portfolio which consists of four pieces, each composed several times over for different combinations of instruments. The purpose of this PhD composition portfolio is threefold. Firstly, it is to contribute to the expansion of the classical guitar repertoire. Secondly, it is to defy the limits imposed by the technical facilities of the physical instrument and bring novelty to its playability. Third and most importantly, it is to overcome the challenges of being a guitarist-composer. Due to a high degree of familiarity with the traditional guitar repertoire, and possessing intimate knowledge of the instrument, it is often difficult for me as a guitarist-composer to depart from habitual tendencies to compose truly innovative works for the instrument. I have thus created a compositional approach whereby I separated my role as a composer from my role as a guitarist in an attempt to overcome this challenge. I called it the ‘dual-role’ approach, comprising four key strategies that I devised which involves (1) borrowing ‘New Music’ practices to defy traditionalist guitar tendencies which are often conservative and insular; (2) adapting compositional materials to different instrumentations; and expanding on (3) the guitar technique as well as; (4) the guitar’s inventory of extended techniques. -

GENERAL IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW PRACTICE FOR GOVERNMENT-DESIGNATED PARKS, FORESTS, ETC. In September 2004, the Cataloging Policy and Support Office announced a proposed change in policy regarding the establishment of headings for government-designated parks and forests. The proposal was intended to address the fact that these headings are most often needed as subject headings for works about these parks and forests, but are occasionally needed as main or added entries for works emanating from the administrative entities that manage or oversee them. The essential point of the proposal was that any such park or forest could potentially be represented by two separate headings, one designating the physical, geographic entity (established as a subject heading tagged 151, usually with a geographic qualifier), and one designating the corporate, administrative entity (established as a name heading tagged 110, with the qualifier (Agency)). -

(1794-1827) Danksagung an den Bach Am Feierabend Der Neugierige Ungeduld Morgengruß Des Müllers Blumen Tränenregen Mein! Pause Mit dem grünen Lautenbande Der Jäger Eifersucht und Stolz Die liebe Farbe Die böse Farbe Trockne Blumen Der Müller und der Bach Des Baches Wiegenlied Program note and translations Die schöne Müllerin is a cycle of 20 songs, set to poems by the German Romantic, Wilhelm Müller. It tells the tale of a young man whose journeying brings him to take an apprenticeship at a mill, where he instantly falls in love with the miller's daughter. His love and advances (perhaps only imagined) are unrequited, and when she turns her attention to a hunter, he mourns the loss of her. When he is left with only the brook that guided him along the way, he succumbs to a watery grave as the brook lulls him to his final rest. The cycle takes us on a powerful emotional odyssey from innocence to infatuation to hope to obsession to disappointment and finally to despair. Along the way, there are many questions, like: Why is the brook so captivating? Are the young man’s thoughts and actions brought about by destiny or by something internal in him? What is real and what is imagined? Why are the young man’s very intense feelings based on the minutest gestures of the miller’s daughter? Is the young man an extraordinarily sensitive person, inordinately in tune with nature and his emotions, or is he emotionally unstable? Arranging this song cycle for the guitar has been a great privilege and a labor of love.
