Eminem quickly gained popularity in 1999 with his major-label debut album, The Slim Shady LP, which won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Album. The following album, The Marshall Mathers LP, became the fastest-selling solo album in United States history.[2] It brought Eminem increased popularity, including his own record label, Shady Records, and brought his group project, D12, to mainstream recognition. The Marshall Mathers LP and his third album, The Eminem Show, also won Grammy Awards, making Eminem the first artist to win Best Rap Album for three consecutive LPs. He then won the award again in 2010 for his album Relapse and in 2011 for his album Recovery, giving him a total of 13 Grammys in his career. In 2003, he won the Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Lose Yourself" from the film, 8 Mile, in which he also played the lead. "Lose Yourself" would go on to become the longest running No. 1 hip hop single.[3] Eminem then went on hiatus after touring in 2005.

Dr. Susan Jasko was my advisor at California University of Pennsylvania since 2005 and encouraged me to stay in the Honors Program. Dr. Drew McGukin had the initiative to bring me to the Honors Program in the first place. I wanted to acknowledge everybody in the Honors Department (Dr. Ed Chute, Dr. Erin Mountz, Mrs. Kim Orslene, and Dr. Don Lawson). Doing a Red Hot Chili Peppers project in 2008 for Mr. Max Gonano was also very important. I would be remiss if I left out the encouragement of my family and my friends, who kept assuring me things would work out when I was never certain. Brolly. Journal of Social Sciences 2 (2) 2019 ON THE EXISTENTIAL POLITICS OF HIP-HOP (OR, THE CONCEPT OF IRONY WITH CONTINUAL REFERENCE TO EMINEM) Simon Stow John Marshall Professor of Government and American Studies The College of William and Mary, USA [email protected] Abstract. Hip-hop has long been considered political: as Chuck D. famously observed “rap music is the CNN of the ghetto”. Moving beyond clearly political themes, slogans, and acts of alterity at the heart of Hip-Hop, this essay employs the work of the rap-artist Eminem to draw out and identify a further way in which those of us engaged in political analysis might productively conceive of the genre as being political. Drawing upon the European and American existentialist traditions, this essay suggests that the artist’s irony, hyperbole, and theatricality are constituents of a political worldview that recognizes both the need for self- creation and the pressure, social, political, and artistic, that make this quest for self-creation both an endless struggle and an opportunity for a vivified care of the self. The aim here is not to seek to valorise the rap genre by suggesting that it might offer insight into the political, but rather to point to the ways in which the cultural analysis of politics, and the political analysis of culture, might move beyond the rote by paying attention to the ethical, political, artistic, and philosophical nuances of the object of study. Keywords: Eminem, hip-hop, rap music, existentialism, irony, theatricality, authenticity, misogyny, homophobia, politics In 2017, the BET Hip-Hop Awards opened with a freestyle performance by the rap-artist Eminem – a.k.a.

The soci- olinguistics and psycholinguistics behind Marshall Mathers and his music, though, are deserving of a PBS documentary. Eminem capitalizes on his lin- guistic genie with as much savvy as he does on his alter egos. He “flips the linguistics,” as he boasts in “Fast Lane” from Bad Meets Evil’s 2011 album Hell: The Sequel. As its title suggests, this essay focuses initially on the fact that rap is deeply rooted in black English, relating this to Eminem in the context of much information on the language of (Detroit) blacks. This linguistic excur- sion may not endear me to readers who hate grammar (or to impatient fans), but it ultimately helps to understand how Eminem and hip hop managed to adopt each other.

Comparing The Slim Shady LP (1999) with his relatively unknown and commercially unsuccessful first album, Infinite (1996), reveals that instead of transcending racial boundaries as some critics have suggested, Eminem negotiated them in ways that made sense to his target audiences. In particular, Eminem’s influential single “My Name Is,” which helped launch his mainstream career, parodied various representations of whiteness to help counter charges that the white rapper lacked authenticity or was simply stealing black culture.

Semesteroppgave i PSY2500: Kommunikasjon, språk og sosiale relasjoner Innleveringsfrist 28.11.2014 kl. 1400. Kandidatnummer 284. Formell oppgavetekst: ”Språket som speil for endringer i samfunnet over tid”. Eminem and women: How the female sex is portrayed in Eminem’s rap texts, and how his representation of the female sex has change during his career. 1.0 Introduction Eminem has been criticized for his condescending view of the female sex. Search on the internet on “Eminem and women” gives a lot of hits with explicit criticism of Eminem’s attitude towards women. More, Hjelen (2008, p. 41) writes that many rappers, included Eminem, have been named as “women haters”, and that rap music represents misogyny. Male rap artists are also more likely than female artists to use profanity in their lyrics (Monk-Turner & Sylvertooth 2008). In regard, it is expected to find a lot of examples or empiric of how the female sex is portrayed in Eminem’s texts. Thereby, an important issue in this paper is to see if and how his attitude towards women has changed from his first record to his last record. This span from the album “Infinity” released in 1996 until “Marshall Matters LP 2” released in 2013. However, since “The Slim Shady LP”, released in 1998, is seen as his first international success, this album will represent the starting point of my analysis. Based on the general development and focus on women’s liberation in today’s society, and a massive critic against Eminem’s lyrics, it is interesting to see if we can find some changes in his representation of the female sex during his career.

The Authenticity of a Rapper: The Lyrical Divide Between Personas and Persons by Hannah Weiner A thesis presented for the B.A. degree with Honors in The Department of English University of Michigan Winter 2014 © March 25, 2014 Hannah Weiner Acknowledgements The past year has been dedicated to listening to countless hours of rap music, researching hip hop blogs, talking to everyone who will listen about exciting ideas about Kanye West, and, naturally, writing. Many individuals have provided assistance that helped an incredible amount during the process of writing and researching for this thesis. Firstly, I am truly indebted to my advisor, Macklin Smith. This thesis would not be nearly as thorough in rap’s historical background or in hip hop poetics without his intelligent ideas. His helpfulness with drafts, inclusion of his own work in e-mails, and willingness to meet over coffee not only deepened my understanding of my own topic, but also made me excited to write and research hip hop poetics. I cannot express how much I appreciated his feedback and flexibility in working with me. I am also grateful for Gillian White’s helpfulness throughout the writing process, as well. After several office hours and meetings outside of class, she has offered invaluable insight into theories on sincerity and the “personal,” and provided me with numerous resources that helped form many of the ideas expressed in my argument. I thank my family for supporting me and offering me hospitality when the stresses of thesis writing overwhelmed me on campus. They have been supportive and a source of love and compassion throughout this process and the past 21 years, as well.
