Traditional Song Forum Meeting, 19th February 2009 held at Exeter Meeting Report Chair: Martin Graebe This was our first meeting in the South-West and it was well attended (over thirty people in the afternoon) and enjoyable, with some interesting presentations from Devon and the neighbouring counties. Member's Activities After an introduction by our hosts, Marilyn Tucker and Paul Wilson of Wren Trust, the meeting started with our usual review of recent activity by those present. Andy Rouse was visiting from Hungary, though he had been a student at Exeter and knew the cities pubs well. He has now been teaching there for 30 years. He was passing through on his way to a conference in Corunna where he was planning to sing about the burial of Sir John Moore. He reminded us that Pécs, where he teaches, will be the cultural capital of Europe in 2010 and looks forward to welcoming TSF members to celebrate. Marilyn Tucker is the Chief Executive of Wren Music and also sits on the Folk Roots and Traditional Music Section of the Musicians Union. She is also on the steering group for the Folk and World Music Initiative started recently in the South-West Region. She visited Andy in Pécs as part of a Devon Cultural contingent last year. She reported that Wren have just heard from the Heritage Lottery Fund that they have been awarded a significant sum to digitise the Baring-Gould folk song manuscripts and get them onto the Web and, as part of the same project, to digitise and put online the Paul Wilson collection of recordings made in Devon over the last 30 years. -

Arhai’s Balkan Folktronica: Serbian Ethno Music Reimagined for British Market* Ivana Medić1 Institute of Musicology SASA (Belgrade) Abstract This article focuses on Serbian composer Jovana Backović and her band/project Arhai, founded in Belgrade in 1998. The central argument is that Arhai made a transition from being regarded a part of the Serbian ethno music scene (which flourished during the 1990s and 2000s) to becoming a part of the global world music scene, after Jovana Backović moved from her native Serbia to the United Kingdom to pursue an international career. This move did not imply a fundamental change of her musical style, but a change of cultural context and market conditions that, in turn, affected her cultural identity. Keywords Arhai, Jovana Backović, world music, ethno, Balkan Folktronica Although Serbian composer, singer and multi-instrumentalist Jovana Backović is only 34 years old, the band Arhai can already be considered her lifetime project. The Greek word ‘Arhai’ meaning ‘beginning’ or ‘ancient’ it is aptly chosen to summarise Backović’s artistic mission: rethinking tradition in contemporary context. Нer interest in traditional music was sparked by her father, himself a professional musician and performer of both traditional and popular folk music (Medić 2013). Backović founded Arhai in Belgrade in 1998, while still a pupil at music school Slavenski, and continued to perform with the band while receiving instruction in classical composition and orchestration at the Belgrade Faculty of Music. In its first, Belgrade ‘incarnation’, Arhai was a ten-piece band that developed a fusion of traditional music from the Balkans with am bient sounds and jazz-influenced improvisation, using both acoustic and electric instruments and a quartet of fe male vocalists. -

There has long been the desire to display these treasured manuscripts back in Cornwall, but there hasn’t been a suitable gallery space. A key aspiration of the Kresen Kernow project (funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Cornwall Council) was to build a gallery space capable of displaying loans from national institutions. We are delighted that our Treasures Gallery meets all the specific security and environmental requirements. The exhibition has been funded through the National Lottery Heritage Fund grant. Folklore, Loss, and Social Change in Nineteenth Century Cornwall BRENDAN McMAHON Introduction: the historical context The nineteenth century was a period of unprecedented social and economic change, at least in France and England. From France emerged the possibility of political transformation, which was to have profound historical consequences, and from England the no less momentous possibility of industrial transformation, forces which combined to create a triumphant liberal capitalism, which consolidated and extended its power in the latter half of the century.1 Britain, where much of this process began, was of course a scene of unprecedented social and industrial change at this time. Between 1831 and 1901 the population increased by ten percent in each decade, and cities grew disproportionately: when Victoria came to the throne only five towns in England and Wales had a population of more than 100,000; by the end of the reign, there were twenty three.2 Cornwall too was transformed: the population increased from 192,000 to 322,000, though it fell during the last three decades of the century due to recession and emigration, as we shall see.3 Cornish people played a big part in the transformation of Britain, and the wider world, and it would be hard to imagine the Industrial Revolution without Humphry Davy, Richard Trevithick, and the countless Cornish engineers and miners who made the wheels turn, everywhere from Mexico to South Australia.4 The landscape itself was changed forever. At the beginning of the century Cornwall was the world’s biggest copper producer, and technological innovation caused both copper and tin production to soar; old mines were re-opened and between 1800 and 1837 the number of workings rose from seventy five to over 200. -

A Brief History of the Cornish Language, its Revival and its Current Status Siarl Ferdinand, University of Wales Trinity Saint David Abstract Despite being dormant during the nineteenth century, the Cornish language has been recently recognised by the British Government as a living regional language after a long period of revival. The first part of this paper discusses the history of traditional Cornish and the reasons for its decline and dismissal. The second part offers an overview of the revival movement since its beginnings in 1904 and analyses the current situation of the language in all possible domains. -

12 Chapter 1 Introduction 1.1 Background For commentators such as Urry (1990) and Woodward (2004), contemporary tourism has its roots in religious pilgrimage. Whilst this is contestable, for some domestic and overseas visitors, a holiday may, for a minority, incorporate twenty or thirty minutes in a parish church at some point. The roles have been reversed from travel for religious purposes incorporating secular pleasure, compare The Canterbury Tales and, perhaps, the Camino de Santiago (Murray & Graham 1997), to tourism including a visit or two to a religious establishment as just one of the destination attractions (Busby 2002; Olsen & Timothy 2006; Woodward 2004). “A resurgence of interest in visiting sacred sites” is how Shackley (2002) explains the recent growth in visitor numbers to cathedrals and churches despite a decline in the importance of religion in society as a whole (Wilson 1985). Indeed, this form is argued to be one of the major growth sectors in international tourism (Russell 1999; Woodward 2004). Empirical data to confirm these views is, however, quite limited; in fact, both Olsen & Timothy (2006) and Vukonić (1998) emphasise that it is one of the most under-researched aspects of tourism. Nonetheless, at a time of declining church congregations, it is interesting to note the development of documentaries over the last five years, by the BBC, featuring rural churches; whilst A Country Parish and A Seaside Parish paid only passing attention to the physical structures, A Passion for Churches, launched on 28 December 2005, emphasised the quality of building heritage – mention is also made of visitors‟ book comments in episode one, featuring St Hywyns, Aberdaron. -

Tradition and Cultural Resistance in Cornwall BRENDAN McMAHON Before the collapse of Roman rule in the fifth century, what is now Cornwall was part of the canton of Dumnonia, an administrative district which had its centre in Exeter.1 Out of the ruins of Roman Britain Dumnonia, comprising Cornwall, Devon and parts of Somerset, arose as one of several successor states resisting Saxon encroachment, though it was eventually to be absorbed by the kingdom of the West Saxons. Many of the Dumnonian people fled overseas to Brittany where their successors still speak Breton, a Celtic language similar to Cornish. The West Saxon King Ine completed the conquest of Devon in the eighth century and Exeter was taken from the Celts, though resistance continued and the English were checked at the Battle of Kehil in 721 or 722.2 The Cornish King Gereint died in battle and was commemorated by the poet Llywarch Hen.3 Later kings, usually described as “shadowy”, include Huwal, king of the west Welsh, who attended Athelstan’s great court in Exeter in 928 AD, as mentioned in the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and “Ricatus”, known only from a single inscription at Penzance, which Philip Payton describes as “a semblance, an echo, an assertion of Cornish kingly independence”.4 Though Athelstan fixed the border at the Tamar he was not able finally to incorporate Cornwall into his new English state, and the “echo” continued to sound up to the eve of the Norman conquest in the far west. Although in ancient times Cornwall had trading links with the Mediterranean, it now ceased to exist as an independent political entity, though it did retain a separate cultural identity.
